AutoTrak Curve RSS Saves More Than 6 Days Rig Time and USD 400,000Location: Oklahoma, SCOOP Area
An operator drilling with conventional, mud-motor BHAs in the Oklahoma’s South Central Oklahoma Oil Province (SCOOP) area contacted Baker Hughes to improve drilling performance in a planned target well. The key performance objectives set by the operator’s drilling team included achieving a dogleg severity (DLS) of 12°/100-ft, and an improvement in the rate of penetration (ROP) as compared to recently drilled offset wells. The conventional drilling process required alternating between sliding and rotating modes to determine tool-face orientation, which incurred invisible nonproductive time (NPT).
Baker Hughes recommended deployment of the AutoTrak™ Curve rotary steerable system with an 8¾-in. Baker Hughes drill bit. The AutoTrak RSS eliminated slide and
enabled precise directional control from the surface for exact wellbore placement and faster drilling. The AutoTrak Curve RSS downlinks on bottom, to efficiently drill ahead and stay on course without interrupting the drilling process. The system enabled drilling out the 95/8-in. service casing, to subsequently drill the 1,900-ft (579-m) vertical/nudge section in one run, averaging 40 ft/hr ROP. After drilling the interval, the AutoTrak Curve RSS was able to kick off in the correct direction, building up to the required DLS with a 14.62°/100-ft BUR. The system maintained an average ROP of 29 ft/hr in the target well, achieving a 127% improvement when compared to the 12.8 ft/hr average ROP of the offset wells. More than 6 days of rig time and two bit trips were eliminated for an estimated savings of USD 400,000.
