BOSWORTH ACADEMY news On Monday 3rd July, Elevate Dance Company - made up of 12 year 8 and 9 students - travelled to Wellingborough to compete in the National Finals of The Great Big Dance Off, after having been placed 2nd in their Regional Finals. The girls created a piece centered around the effects that media and social media have on teenage girls in today’s society. The group researched the topic and then each recorded a piece of speech that particularly shocked them, related to them or moved them; this then became the basis for their music and stimulus. The day itself was a huge success and the group performed beautifully, ending up achieving 7th place in the country for KS3 Dance. This is such a well deserved and proud moment after months of long rehearsals and hard work. Well done girls on such a fantastic achievement! This year, 33 students from Bosworth Academy went to visit our twin School in Rouen “Le Collège Jean Delacour”. Students were involved in a busy activity programme which gave them an opportunity to discover more about the culture and history of France. They learnt about the great Viking ‘Rollo’ who was a common ancestor for both countries. They experienced shopping in town using what they had learnt in class to buy souvenirs, or order food and drink.

Students went to visit the memorial of Caen and one of the D-Day beaches where French and British troops fought together.

Students visited Rouen with their French classmates. They learnt about the great Viking ‘Rollo’ who was a common ancestor for both countries. They experienced shopping in town using what they had learnt in class to buy

souvenirs, or order food and drink. Finally, they spent one day at the Collège Jean Delacour and took part in different lessons such as PE, Maths, Music and Art in full immersion.

In June, the French students came and visited us. They visited Leicester with a group of our year 10 students and spent a whole day at Bosworth Academy. This exchange has been taking place for three years and it has enabled students to develop strong links with each other. Students of the Bosworth Theatre Company performed David Greig’s play ‘Dr Korczak’s Example’ on 25th and 26th of May. The play is set in an orphanage in a ghetto in Poland.

The action takes place shortly before the mass deportation of Jews to concentration camps and focuses on the real life pediatrician Dr Janusz Korczak. The subjects of humanity, tolerance and acceptance in the face of fear and brutality were particularly resonant and important to explore in light of recent national and world events. Students learnt about life in the ghettos and the experiences that people faced at that time.

They explored the different viewpoints on how to resist oppression and how there are no easy

answers to this. The students performed as an ensemble with the whole cast multi-rolling different parts.

Students also learnt and performed a song in Hebrew called ‘Hine Ma Tov.’ This literally translates to ‘It is a beautiful thing when brothers stand together in unity’. Students were involved in set design, costume and marketing as well as acting.

Parents thoroughly enjoyed the play and were very moved by the performances given. This ensured the Bosworth Theatre Company’s first year was a tremendous success.

An interview with teacher Dr DoverI am part of the Science team at Bosworth Academy with a specialism in Chemistry. I started studying for my Chemistry degree at the University of Leicester in 2000, and graduated with a 1st class degree in 2004. I was awarded the Dunlop Polymer Engineering prize for graduating top of my year.

As a result of my undergraduate success, I was offered a departmentally funded PhD position, which I was very happy to accept. My doctoral thesis title was ‘Laser Spectroscopy and Theoretical Studies of Silicon and Germanium-Containing Species’. This involved creating and characterising short-lived radical species by using high resolution laser systems, and using supercomputers to run accompanying quantum chemical calculations. Conducting these sorts of experiments requires skills far away from chemistry. I had to learn all sorts of things I hadn’t imagined including: mechanical and electronic engineering, computer programming and an appreciation of quantum physics I never thought I could possibly achieve. All of these skills were learned independently and really taught me that anyone can learn anything if they really put their mind to it.

During my PhD, I spent some time working at the University of Bristol and presented my findings at an international conference at Oxford University to an audience of world-class academics in the field of spectroscopy (which remains the most terrifying experience of my life!) Once I had completed my PhD, although I had thoroughly enjoyed the research environment, I realised that what I had enjoyed even more was the opportunity to teach undergraduates in lab classes and workshops.

I completed a PGCE at the University of East Anglia in 2010 and have been at Bosworth Academy ever since. I love working here as no two days are the same, and I am constantly amazed by the questions that young people ask.

Tortoise, Billie, working with our Henrichment students

Dr Matt Dover

Recently the year 8 Henrichment team received a visit from a very noble and distinguished guest. The lady in question has lived through World War 2, witnessed the first man on the moon and watched England win the world cup. No, not her majesty the Queen but 91-year-old Billie, the Spur-thighed Tortoise.

Whilst Billie enjoyed the delights of the Academy’s learning garden, our students became zoologists for the afternoon, studying her behaviour and researching her adaptations, origins, diet and husbandry. Using their newly researched knowledge, our students created some impressive fact files, sketches and even a documentary that even Sir David Attenborough would be proud of. Billie’s visit captured the imagination of the Henrichment team and many of our other students, who seized the opportunity

to meet our intriguing new friend. All that’s left to say is thank you Billie for all you ‘tortoise’!

Thank you to former Bosworth Academy student Richard Briars, of Brielec Electrical Contractors, who kindly let us borrow Billie for the afternoon.
