ARNOLD ACADEMY PAGE 2

Dear Parents/Carers Our Academy has made an excellent start at the beginning of the new academic year. We held the annual ‘Values Day’ in September and invited our partner Lower school year four children to join us for the activities – see further in the newsletter for additional information about this highly-successful day.

The fund-raising towards our outdoor classroom space and sensory garden was set off with a fantastic start by the Fun Run, kindly organised by Mr Tfifha. He was very pleased with the total raised so far (currently £960) and wanted to thank everyone for their efforts. A special mention for Kira Peacock for raising £110 alone! Our Site Manager, Dale Childs, has already booked the builders to cut holes in the old swimming pool floor (for drainage) and to put in place the decking and seating levels.

We particularly want to ensure that the area is ready to use in the spring to allow our current Year Eights to get the benefit of the space. I know that many will benefit from the quiet area, linked to our PALM Centre and Learning Mentors, who provide so much support for our children. The next stage will be the Garden Development Working Party, led by Mr Childs with volunteer staff and a group of pupils. They will be researching and designing the planting areas (including trellis around the learning space and the type of plants for the sensory garden. We would welcome advice from anyone else (it has already been suggested that we contact Wrest Park apprentices). Contact [email protected] if you have expertise and want to help. Further information and a sketch can be found in the centre of our newsletter. Please continue to give generously.

We were very pleased to greet so many parents and carers at our recent Form Tutor meeting and thank you all for making sure that the children all arrive with the right attitude to work; well-equipped for learning and wearing the correct school uniform.

Do keep in touch with us if you have any questions about your child’s learning. The week before half term holiday is the time that children should be bringing home their school books (if they haven’t already been seen and signed by you). We like to make sure that you see the books at least termly so that you

can discuss the work and the levels that your child is working towards and the progress they are making with each subject. Teaching staff can be contacted through our school email system: the initial of the first name joined to the [email protected] or via [email protected]. If you don’t get the answer the first time don’t hesitate to contact Key Stage Leaders: [email protected] or [email protected] Best wishes Ann Payne Headteacher

View from the Chair of Governors

With unseasonably mild weather this feels like an odd time to be writing a contribution to the autumn newsletter but as always the school year is flying by.

Looking back to last term we launched Arnold Academy in July and now this term all the staff have been working hard to carry on the excellent achievements of Arnold Middle School. I think it is fair to say that everyone at Arnold is getting to grips with the long term difference Academy status might make, not least the new Governing Body. However, there are a number of reasons why we should approach this monumental change with positive anticipation.

Firstly, as last years’ Key Stage results demonstrate the improvements in English and Maths are showing steady year on improvement. This, alongside the robust and accurate data that enables close monitoring of pupil perform-ance we have a solid platform for further development.

Secondly, as anyone who has visited the school this term will testify, we have some excellent facilities. The latest phase of development which includes the entrance and administration block gives the school a modern look and feel to go with the education provided.

And finally the most important ingredient of all the pupils and staff. Throughout the rest of this newsletter you will find the sheer variety of achievement and activity underway. From academic to sporting there is no shortage of excellence and endeavour. This above all else, makes me think Arnold will excel as an Academy.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

With immediate effect, we would be grateful if all cheque payments made to school are payable to ARNOLD ACADEMY. This applies whether it is a payment for dinner money, activities, donations, or trip money including those trips to which you may already be contributing. The only exception is where you may have an arrangement with the Music Department for your child’s instrument lessons – this will continue as before. The new procedure will simplify our systems and reduce our accounting/auditing costs thereby increasing funds available for the children. We are in discussions with our bank with regard to electronic payments and hope to make this alternative available to you soon. We will keep you informed. Thank you. Mrs K Wildey & Mrs R Carter Finance Department

Halloween & Bonfire Night As Halloween approaches, Bedfordshire Police is reminding parents and guardians to keep their children safe. If possible, parents should go out ‘trick or treating’ with their children, sticking to well-lit areas and only knocking on the doors of people they know. Some people may have ‘No trick or treat’ posters up at their doors and we ask that these are

respected. Bedfordshire Police is also reminding children and parents to be mindful that some of the more vulnerable or elderly members of the community may feel intimidated by people calling at their doors and appeals to all residents to look out for their neighbours who may feel frightened during this time. Extra patrols will be on hand over the Halloween and bonfire night period to ensure that the evenings can be enjoyed safely. For more advice about Halloween please visit www.bedfordshire.police.uk

Values Day 2011

Last month saw the most successful ‘Values Day’ so far with Arnold welcoming over 120 year 4 pupils and staff from our feeder Lower schools to enjoy the day with us. This year we focused on our 3 core values : RESPECT; TRUST and CO-OPERATION. Key Stage 3 worked together in their forms on a variety of activity promoting one or more of these values. We had bridge building, scientific investigations, drama activities and language quizzes to name just a few. Key Stage 2 divided into vertical groups with our Year 4 visitors and spent the day working together exploring our themes of the day. A great day was had by all pupils and we look forward to welcoming them to Arnold very soon.

All pupils and staff had a fantastic day. "We were worried that the Year 4's would find it too much coming up to Arnold so early on in the term, but they have had a brilliant day," commented a lower school member of staff. Thank you to all members of staff from both Arnold and our feeder schools who helped make this day such a success.

Values Day at Arnold

by Emily Binns

Values day was a great day because we got to do all sorts of things. We got to make fabric men like the men in the advert, change for life. The first thing we did was a forest picture. It needed 4 layers. With Mr Rudkin we had to make a square out of lots of different shapes. My group did it! With Miss Reeve we made a poster of a value. Oh, and the Year 4’s came for all of this. It was a great day.

Values day was all about showing values and working together. Year 4’s came from local schools i n c l u d i n g R a m s e y M a n o r , Greenfield, Pulloxhill, Silsoe, Sundon & Westoning. My favourite activity was where we had a jigsaw that each piece if put together correctly creates a square.

Today the Year 4’s came for a trip to Arnold. We played all kinds of games and activities. My group did a forest painting and made fabric men. There were schools from Ram-sey, Silsoe, Westoning, Sundon, Greenfield and Pulloxhill. We also did a shape game where we had six shapes and they made a square. We did a values poster where we chose a value and drew a picture about it.

History Department News

The History department continues to grow from strength to strength at Arnold with a team dedicated to providing all pupils with an enjoyable and worthwhile journey through our past. Mrs Wood has been working hard in Year 5 creating a new style of assessment sheet based on the ‘DEAL’ (describe, explain, analyse and link) sheets used in Science. These have proved very successful and are currently being created for all assessments across Years 5-8. We hope this will ensure a sense of continuity throughout all topics studies.

Our new History club (Thursdays 3.30-4.30) has proved extremely successful with over 25 children attending weekly. Currently we are designing and building our very own Ancient Greek hoplite shields. It is brilliant fun and all participants seem to be thoroughly enjoying themselves.

As always, we are continuously looking to add to our already extensive collection of historical artefacts. If you feel you have any items that you would like to donate to the History department please contact me either via the office or by email [email protected] Miss R Truscott Leader of History

Values at Arnold

As I’m sure you are aware, we are very proud to be a Values School. At Arnold we work hard promoting our values throughout the year through a variety of ways including assemblies; schemes of work and our values cards. As parents and carers we would like you to have the opportunity to discuss our values at home with your child. Below you will find a list of our values for this half term up to Christmas. Fun Run Update Pupils have been busy collecting sponsorship money after a fun afternoon of fundraising for our Sensory Garden. To date, together with the pupil contribution of £2 for non uniform and taking part in the fun run the children have raised a massive £1088, the total keeps changing. We hope to receive all sponsorship by half term.

We would like to give a special mention to some of our pupils who raised a significant amount of money through sponsorship; these include Emma Boost, Lauren Bunyan, Millie Davidson, Daniel Day, Holly Fish, Charlotte Godino, Chloe Joy, Sam King, Charlie Milton, Kira Peacock, Misty Penning, Nathan Shanley and James Wright. Without the support of all our pupils and the contribution made by each and everyone we would not have made such a great start in this project. We look forward to the next fund raising activity which is being led by our School Council, look out for details of the ‘Bag2School’ collection. Thank you.

Sensory Garden

Our fundraising has begun and our hopes and dreams for the old swimming pool are drawn below. The pool is to be filled in, decked and with the help of volunteers, planted to become a beautiful sensory garden. Leave of Absence Requests We continue to encourage full attendance at Arnold Academy to maximise the continuity of learning. We follow agreed local and government procedures when considering all requests for leave of absence. Please bear in mind that authorised leave can only be granted for a maximum of 10 days in any one request and under specific and exceptional criteria. Requests must be received at least 4 weeks before the date of the requested leave period. Requests for leave which are an extension of the school holidays are not granted. All requests must be made on the form available from the office. The section below is taken from the policy.

FAMILY HOLIDAYS DURING TERM TIME

The following information on holidays has been the subject of consultation between Arnold, Parkfields and Harlington Upper and adopted across the HASP schools.

The school discourages family holidays in term time due to the impact on pupils’ learning. There is no automatic entitlement for any holiday. A pupil will only be granted holidays in exceptional circumstances. Holidays of more than 10 days will be recorded as unauthorised. Holidays taken in September, May or the first two weeks of

June, when important testing takes place, will be unauthorised. Fixed penalty warnings will be issued if 10 or more sessions of unauthorised absence are taken in a ten week period. A Fixed Penalty Notice will be issued when a pupil has taken more than 10 days of holiday which has not been authorised by the school during their time at Arnold Academy. Holidays taken in term time must be applied for at least four weeks before the date of the holiday using the form available from the school office. Only the Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher can authorise absence. If a request form is not completed the holiday will be unauthorised.

Extended Holidays

The school actively discourages the taking of extended holidays in term time. If the school grants leave for an extended holiday which extend beyond the agreed deadline it may constitute grounds for removing the pupil from the school role. Thank you for considering the above when applying for leave of absence for your child.

Arnold Academy & Barton Library Community Project

We are working with our village library to support local residents develop their IT skills. Pupils and local residents created a working agreement to establish a mutually beneficial working environment for both groups.

We are conducting a trial for the project with a small group of pupils and residents which we will consider extending if this proves to be popular and practical to deliver. This is an exciting project and I am proud of the commitment shown by the pupils who have agreed to take part. Arnold Academy can show that we can make a positive contribution to our local community.

Mobile ANPR Parking Enforcement Van in Central Bedfordshire

We have been advised to make people aware about the new mobile enforcement van that will be patrolling Central Bedfordshire and urge them to park legally and safely when parking near to schools. In response to concerns about dangerous and disruptive parking near schools, Central Bedfordshire Council has purchased a new mobile enforcement vehicle which has been equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) equipment which will allow a Penalty Charge Notice to be issued for vehicles that park on yellow lines.

Whilst the vast majority of motorists are considerate when parking there are still a number of individuals that endanger the safety of others by parking at inappropriate and dangerous locations. Parking restrictions are put in place on safety grounds or to assist the free flow of traffic for the benefit of the residents of Central Bedfordshire and the general public.

The vehicle will operate by collecting the registration numbers of vehicles parked on restrictions and will process this information to create Penalty Charge Notices. Initially the

ANPR van will be used to deal with motorists who continue to ignore parking regulations on school keep clear markings, yellow lines and pedestrian crossings outside the school gates.

This will help to protect pedestrians at entrances to schools and road crossings by improving pedestrian sight lines and increasing their visibility to motorists, which in turn will help with safety when crossing roads.

REMINDERS

A polite reminder that the disability parking bays are reserved for parents of pupils who have a physical disability. It would be very helpful if parents could move well along the car park when waiting to pick up their

child, as it can cause other cars behind to block the school transport coming in to collect the children to travel to the other villages. This then leads to long tail-backs on the Hexton Road, which could lead to a very serious accident if cars come along the road too fast. No parking is allowed along any part of the bus bays at the beginning and end of the Academy day as we have five coaches/ double decker buses and Local Authority commissioned taxis that need to have access to the area to load on children safely. Please avoid parking in the area near the mini bus garage/exit as the buses often find it difficult to get out of the school grounds.

Smoking is completely banned from all school sites (including Arnold Academy) and this extends to cars (and school transport) parked on the school site. We want to have children hydrated in school and provide

water fountains for them but it is most helpful if they can have water bottles with sports lids. The snacks sold at Arnies meet the nutritional standards set by the government and we want the children to bring only healthy snacks for break times.

With the weather turning colder now, please make sure that your child’s coat is properly named (along with the rest of his or her uniform). THANK YOU

Operation Christmas Child

Year 5 are, once again, taking part in Operation Christmas Child. This is a shoebox appeal created to bring joy to underprivileged children around the world. Not everyone can afford to fill a whole box, but most people can provide one item to help fill a box. For this reason we’re asking for items to go into boxes, and the children in Year 5 will put the boxes together.

These are the items we’re looking for: Shoe boxes with separate lids

Christmas wrapping paper

Soft toys (bought with CE label please)

Other small toys

Drawing and colouring items

Hygiene items - ie toothbrush, flannel

Sports items

Sweets (sell-by date beyond March 2012)

Small items of clothing - ie hat, gloves, t shirt

If you would like to contribute anything for the boxes, please send them to Mrs Wood in Year 5. The shoe boxes need to be ready by the beginning of November, so the sooner the better please. For more specific information on the appeal and the items for the boxes, go to: http://www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk/ PS: If you like to knit, the site includes downloadable knitting patterns of items that can go in the boxes – the finger puppets look good! Thank you Mrs Wood Year 5 Form Tutor

Great Opportunities in Year 8

In year 8 there are lots of opportunities you can sign up to do like: Lunchtime monitor Anti bullying Lunch time sport helpers Active listener and more. I am a lunch time sports leader and find it great fun. We have a responsibility to look after the sports equipment and to plan and carry out safe and active games for all years to play. This term Year 8 have already had the opportunity to go and see ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ by William Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre in Stratford on Avon. I went on this trip and thought it was really good. The play was funny and I now know so much more about Shakespeare and his style of writing. Also on the trip we were lucky enough to meet the Paralympic cyclist Alison Jones and the American Olympic gymnast Nastia Lukin. We had a photograph taken with them and they called us ‘Team Arnold’. Recently the Year 8’s have gone on a visit to Harlington Upper School where

we got to look around the school and all the different subjects available. This gave us an idea of what it is going to be like next September and I am now really looking forward to it. Throughout the evening there were loads of activities we could have a go at. In science we could set our hand on fire! In maths there were games going on and surveys, also in food and textiles there

were samples of some Chelsea buns they had made which were really tasty.

Altogether there are lots of great opportunities in Year 8 at Arnold. by Jessica Jones 8AMG

Music Department News

The Music Department had a very successful year 2010-2011. We put on three very successful concerts - one in each term.

Further developed our skills based curriculum for all years.

Introduced a new private scheme of instrumental teaching.

This year we can build on this in the classroom, in the instrumental lessons and through the extracurricular activities.

IN THE CLASSROOM – Autumn term Year 5 – Will be learning how to compose using classroom instruments and demonstrating their understanding of rhythm through the idea of a machine. . Year 6 – Will be setting a poem to music and demonstrating pitch, tempo and dynamics. Year 7 – Will learn about the basic elements of music and create a composition demonstrating tempo and describing a train journey. Year 8 – Will be discovering different kinds of musical form and producing their very first solo composition in ternary form.

INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS This year we are working with an excellent team of private instrumental

teachers, these have replaced the former Beds music teachers. Moving to our own private scheme means we are in total control of the lessons and can ensure a high standard of tuition and value for money. Our lesson fees are much less than those charged by the county music service and as a result so far this term we have started over 50 new pupils. We have managed to provide lessons to all those who wanted them. At present we are trying to encourage

brass tuition, so If any pupil would like to start learning a trumpet then they should see Mr Cadd for further information.

We will also be taking part in the London 2012 Get Set initiative, receiving free tickets to either the Olympic or Paralympic Games – what a fantastic reporting

opportunity for our pupils. Year 5 have been studying ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ by William Shakespeare. OUT OF SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENTS

On 25th September Joshua Riddaway, a former Arnold pupil, was crowned under 16 national Grand Prix champion 2011, his first national title. Four other players from Bedfordshire took part which had the top 28 juniors from around the county competing including at least 5 England Internationals. Joel Riddaway, Joshua’s brother and also a former Arnold pupil, just missed out on the quarter finals but has another two years left in which to enter this competition.

Next stop is the national interleague finals in Great Yarmouth. Good luck and congratulations.

CARTER’S CHRONICLES from the Pulloxhill News

Hello, I’m Emily Carter and I am going to be writing a couple of paragraphs in the Pulloxhill Village News about life from a child’s perspective for a while.

I live in Whinnett’s Way and at the end of last month, all the residents got together to hold a celebratory BBQ as it was 40 years since the last house was completed in the road. I took some photos and wrote a newspaper report of the event and gave a copy to everyone who lives in the road. A copy of the report is included later in this month’s PVN edition. We all had a fantastic time. The adults did a lot of catching up over several bottles of wine and the children played on their bikes and scooters and made huge bubbles with their bubble wands.

After hours of bubble blowing and gossip we held a general knowledge quiz: the teams were:Whinnett’s Winners and Winners Way

The result was very close but Whinnett’s Winners won. Well done!

Alex Gray from 5NP, has been racing BMX in the East Anglia region for the last few years with his dad. This year, Alex gained enough points in regional races to qualify for the British National Championships. On 24-26 of September he represented his local club, the Milton Keynes Crew, and the East Anglia region at the championships in Cheddar, Somerset. There were around 1,000 riders

across all age-groups and classes. Alex competed in the 10+ category alongside over 50 other boys. He narrowly missed out on a place in the quarter finals, and hopes to do better next year.

PE Department It has already been a hectic and eventful term in the PE department at Arnold Academy. With the Rugby league and cup starting for years 7 and 8, rugby training began the very first full week back and both year groups are well in to the campaigns. It has been a particularly successful season so far for the year 7 squad who have continued on from their great last season to win their first 4 league games and also a tough away cup game against Marston Vale in which we were successful after extra time. The boys commitment has been fantastic and the performances have demonstrated just how hard the boys have trained for the season. A huge well done to the following squad:

Meanwhile the year 8’s have started their season. Despite being successful in recent seasons this year has been particularly difficult for this year group with so many injuries affecting so many of our players, so much so that in two of our matches we have actually had a man short. Despite this, the boys have really pulled together and recorded a great recent win against Etonbury Middle School, among some other very good performances. Well done to all of the boys who have pulled together. A special mention must also go to captain Evan Taylor who has been a magnificent leader for the team. With the year 5 and 6 rugby team deep into practice too, we look forward to the upcoming year 6 Bancrofts Rugby Festival in November. Whilst the football leagues haven’t yet begun, the County Cup competitions have. The year 7’s continued their excellent form from last year winning a friendly against Alameda 10-0. This was then followed up by an excellent 7-0 home win against Lincroft Middle School in the first round of the County Cup. Keep up the good work boys and good luck in your next round game away at Newnham.

The year 8’s also kicked off their County Cup season away at Newnham, with 6 of the squad out with injuries it was always going to be a tough challenge. The boys tried really hard but we narrowly lost 1-0. It will be the first time in 4 years that the boys haven’t made it to the County Cup Final. We look forward to the upcoming year 6 County Cup competition. With training well under way we were given a bye in the first round and will shortly face Ashton Middle School in the 2nd round of the competition. The girls have also been in action this term with the KS3 netball league kicking off on the 22nd September. The teams have been practising regularly at lunchtimes and afterschool, so far the girls have played six other schools and both the year 7 and 8 teams have only lost one of these games. The girl’s hard work and commitment to training sessions has definitely paid off as both teams have developed their team and individual skills considerably. A big congratulations to all the girls involved and keep up the hard work. Year 7

The year 5 & 6 teams have also been training hard for their up and coming league that commences after half term. Teams have been selected and will now begin to train tactically with Miss Paranihi. Good luck to all the girls. Miss J Cooke Mr K Tfifha
