Reading

Reading for enjoyment is a major part of the children’s learning; all children choose a reading book to read, not only for their own pleasure but also for the benefits it brings in terms of language, vocabulary and imagination.

Year Six have a new reading timetable for this term and will read individually to me every week. They will also be heard read by a Teaching Assistant. It is vital they continue to read at home each evening to further develop their expression and fluency. It would be extremely beneficial for the storyline to be discussed and their thoughts and opinions of the text explored.

Thank you in advance with your support with this. It is so important.

Reading Comprehension

As well as reading, we need to understand what we read and each child will continue to develop the skills of comprehension across all curriculum subjects.

Each Wednesday, our English lesson will be focussed on reading comprehension and myself together with Mrs Kennedy, Ms Shrimpton and Mrs Bird will be working with the children in small groups.

We will be focussing upon Narrative Texts as story writing is going to be our key writing genre for this half term. We will be continuing to look at inference and deduction skills and how we can draw from the text to support our answers. In particular we will be drawing upon characters and settings and how the author paints a picture in our minds by the words he/she uses.

Class Reading Book

This term our class reading books will be linked to World War One and Two humanities project. We will be continuing to read Michael Morpurgo’s very moving novel – Private Peaceful.

We will also look at two further short reads:

• War Game By Michael Foreman

• One Boy’s War By Lynn Huggins Cooper

Last half term we successfully wrote emotive poetry, informative instructional texts, detailed recounts and finished by writing diary entries which required us to use a more informal, personal approach. On the final Friday the class made diaries which they were going to use over half term holiday. I hope they enjoyed keeping their diaries.

Our writing genres for this half term are going to be:

Remembrance Poetry – What If…

Narrative writing – Story Telling. We will begin by creating characters and focussing on both their appearances and personalities. We will move onto settings and let our effective choice of descriptive vocabulary, together with sensory phrases, paint a clear picture for the reader of where our story is taking place. We will combine characters, setting and create intriguing storylines for readers to enjoy.

To further enhance the children’s writing skills, the weekly reading comprehension lessons will link directly to our narrative writing and we will be reading a wide range of stories including Myths and Legends.

MathsOur maths focus areas for this half term are:• Long division• Fractions, percentages and decimals• Problem solving using all four operations• Data Handling• Properties of a circle• Time including the 24hr clock

A key aspect to successful mathematics learning is to be able to discuss what calculation strategies we are using and why. To be able to talk about our learning enables us to learn more effectively and make good progress. On Fridays our focus is mental maths and we will discuss the way we answered different maths questions and become more confident at explaining why we chose certain methods.

Electricity

Our science project for this half term is Electricity and by means of a hands on, investigative approach, we

will be discovering the answers to the following questions:-

To be able to associate the brightness of a lamp or the volume of a buzzer with the number and voltage of cells used

in a circuit.

To be able to compare and give reasons for variations in how components function, including the brightness of bulbs

or the loudness of buzzers and the position of the on/off switch

To be able to recognised symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram.

We will also be completing an extra science concept on Sound:-

• To be able to identify how sounds are made, associating some of them with something vibrating

• To be able to recognise that vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the ear

• To be able to find patterns between the pitch of a sound and features of the object that produced it

• To be able to find patterns between the volume of a sound and the strength of the vibrations that produced it

• To be able to recognise that sounds get fainter as the distance from the sound source increases

Year Six will be teaching their Buddies in Reception science near Christmas and they will be trying

to light up Rudolf's Red Nose!

Humanities – combining both History and Geography to discover why Britain was at War.

The children will look very closely at British History between 1914 and 1945 – The First and Second World Wars. They will find out about the past by learning to question evidence and suggest possible hypotheses based on historical fact. They will learn about what happened during the period, the impact on people and their way of life and how it affected events in the future. We will begin by looking at Burnham War Memorial…

We will look closely at the Hill family who lost four members of their family during WW1.We will closely follow the events of Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day on the 11th November.

And Finally …

I would like to offer the opportunity for Year Six to achieve an Arts Council ‘Bronze Art Award.’

This exciting scheme is the first of its kind to recognise young

people’s development through the arts. It is about young people making creative choices, setting themselves challenges and sharing their skills and achievements.

The Arts Award is a recognised national qualification which is

equivalent to a quarter of a GCSE. The award fosters creativity, communication and leadership skills and helps to prepare young people for secondary school and further education. The award scheme is accessible to any young person aged 11-25, hence the children beginning with the bronze award.
