Autumn Term Week 2
(Week B)
This Wednesday, 20th January, the Humanities
department led a trip to Masdar City as part of Abu
Dhabi sustainability week 2016.
As part of the trip, pupils in Year 8 have been developing
their very own solar powered cars during PSHE, finished
off on Wednesday morning before, competed in a race to
see who qualifies for the final this Saturday.
‘Masdar Clean Energy’ is on a mission to advance the
clean energy industry in Abu Dhabi. Pupils took part in a
tour of the city, looking at the ideas and innovations that
the ‘Masdar Clean Energy’ group.

On Sunday, Year 4 Nile investigated if
gas actually weighs something. We had
five one litre bottles of pop and wanted
to see which one had the most gas.
First of all we weighed the bottles in
grams using digital scales. Then we
shook them vigorously for 30 seconds,
whilst listening to the Benny Hill sound
track. Immediately after, we opened the
top slowly to release the carbon dioxide
inside. We repeated this four times until
the drinks were flat. Finally we weighed
the bottles again to see if their weight
had changed. We found that on average
each bottle weighed 2 grams less.
So to sum up, YES! Gas does weigh
something.
It has been an awesome opening for Week 1 in Year 4 with
some great achievements already. Here are our fantastic stars
of the week…
They are (from left to right):
Lillian Wierzbanowski, Kyle Bannerman, Sonia
Nycyk, Aurelia Solomon and Madeleine Patterson.
BITHNA HOUSE CAPTAINS
.
This Wednesday, we waved goodbye to a number of Bithna
pupils who are participating in the BSME games in Oman
over the next four days.
The Bithna House wishes the best of luck to Laura Hurn,
Louie Reid, Rosie Moore, Joseph Randall, Ammarah Malik
and all of their teammates.
We cannot wait to celebrate your successes with you when
you return next week
The Year 7 and 8 musical rehearsals have begun for Beauty and the Beast! The
enthusiasm and dedication that the pupils have exhibited in the first few weeks of
rehearsals has been amazing. Bithna would like to extend its heartfelt congratulations
to Mia, Cameron, Iona, Aidan, Ana Cecilia, Sergio, Louie, Charlotte, Maddie, Laura,
Cara, Adam, Jeanne, Kaspar, Khaled and the rest of the cast. We are looking forward
to witnessing this musical phenomenon in May!
We had a chance to catch up with Khalid Al Nowais, who is playing the Beast, for a
quick interview.
Bithna: Congratulations Khaled! You must be excited! What are you looking forward to most in the making of ‘Beauty and
the Beast’?
Khaled: The costume! I can’t wait to see what it looks like and try it on. It is going to be really fun to put on
the mask, make-up and claws and really become the Beast. Plus, he is my favourite character in the show
and I feel proud to be playing him.
B: What do you think your greatest challenge will be in preparing for the role of the Beast?
K: The singing. I have to pay attention to getting the music, the words and the acting happening all at the
same time. The acting and dialogue I am pretty excited about because I have an awesome cast to work
with, but the singing is something new for me. I’ve never really sung in public before.
B: I can imagine that would be difficult! So far, how do you think the cast is doing in their preparations?
K: The cast are doing great! The acting, the talent, the character development is really coming along. The
cast is just a ton of fun to work with in creating this show. In rehearsals, we are really getting to know the
show better and dig deeper into our characters and we have a lot of laughs along the way.
B: Thanks for taking the time to meet with us, Khaled! We wish you the very best of luck in ‘Beauty and the Beast’!
K: Thank you for interviewing me! I can’t wait to see how the show will turn out and hope that everyone
can come to support this great cast!
Wednesday was a busy day at Brighton College. Not only did we send pupils off to
Oman for the BSME games, but the remaining Year 8s participated in a sustainability
project. The pupils in Year 8 Bithna split into groups to make solar powered cars. After
completing their cars, pupils raced their creations to glory!
The Year 8s enjoyed creating their cars immensely and working together to ride on the
road to success. The winner of the competition gets to compete in a solar car race in
Masdar City as part of this sustainability based activity. Mia Robinson says, “This has
been a great experience and learning through trial and error while building our cars has
been really exciting. Working with my team has been cool and we are looking forward to
racing our solar cars!”
We are cheering for all the Bithna cars! Good luck Year 8!
… Meet two new Hosn pupils
This week…
This week Hosn, would like you to meet its newest members, Haneen and
Aayush in Year 5, Amelia Mae in Year 6 and Nikhil in Year 7. The pupils share
their thoughts on how they have settled in, and how they are getting on in a
new school.
I am Aayush, I’m nine years old and I
am from India. My school is called
Brighton College Abu Dhabi. I love
Brighton because it is a great school; I
get to study and play a lot. There are a
lot of my favourite subjects and there
are really nice teachers, too. I am really
looking forward to poetry in English
and Algebra in Maths,
Hello, I am Haneen. My first day was
phenomenal; Mrs Bourn, my Form Tutor, is
the most fantastic and most brilliant teacher
I have ever had. My first impressions have
been awesome; I started off not knowing
anyone, but after one activity in Form Time
I new everyone’s names! Everyone helped
me to fit in perfectly and I love Brighton
College! All of my class mates are the
coolest,
Hello, my name is Amelia Mae
Hammond, and I come from England,
UK.I am new to the school, and to Abu
Dhabi – I have been here less than a
month! I am very excited to have joined
the Prep School learning programme of
Brighton College Abu Dhabi. I am
enjoying Brighton College so far because
everyone is so welcoming and kind. I bet
I will have a fun time at this school, and
will make lots of new friends.
Hi! I am Nikhil Talwalkar and I have just
joined Brighton College in Year 7. I am
originally from India, but I used to live in
Singapore. Settling down in to a completely
new country after living in one for nine years
is not easy. I used to go to places using pubic
transport very easily in Singapore; here I don’t
get to use a bus card or where the buses go
to! I like it at Brighton College; it is really
different to my old school but things are
better here. I found friends in no time and
started going everywhere with them. I am
looking forward to Hosn Fun Day where we
will have activities which the teachers can do.
I am having fun and as I get to know more
people I will make even more friends in the
school, and be even happier.
This week, Hosn Common Room welcomed a new carpet! The carpet
has been put to good use in the soft seating area of the Common
Room, making it a more inviting, homely and warm environment for
pupils to read in during break times. The carpet was generously
donated by Mrs Kerr, mother of Aidan Kerr in Year 3, and we thank
you for thinking of Hosn.
We are looking for donations of good-quality board games for pupils
to play with, so if you have any that your children have outgrown,
please consider Hosn before throwing them out!
Thank you in advance.
This week, the newsletter invites you to read about one of the more unusual activities offered as a CCA
through the College – Horse riding!
Two of Hosn’s pupils, Yara in Year 6 and Rama in Year 8, have kindly written a short piece describing
their interesting activity.
Horse riding is a fun and exciting CCA, as you get to earn a new skill and practice it. Also, most pupils
look forward to going horse riding as it is an exhilarating sport, and an unusual way to stay fit. Many
pupils from Brighton enjoy doing it and I am sure that many others would, too! The horse riding takes
place at Al Forsan, and all of the teachers there are so nice to us. During the year you get to learn how to
ride a horse and how to take care of them. For beginners, you start off learning how to trot, before
moving on to cantering. At the moment, I am learning how to canter and its lots of fun! I recommend
this CCA to anyone who loves horses or animal in general. This is an amazing CCA, and everyone
should give it a go!
Rama, Year 8
Hello, my name is Yara Sharaf and I go horse riding every Wednesday for a CCA after school. I’ve been
doing horse riding for approximately three and a half years and I have learned how to walk, trot and
canter. I have been to a horse riding competition and came in second place. I also achieved a silver medal
in my horse riding exam.
Yara, Year 6
On Tuesday, 19th January the
U11Bs went to Zayed Sports’ City
to compete against other schools
from Abu Dhabi. We had two
victories, one against Cranleigh - in
which we won 13-0 and one against
BSAK, which we won 4-0.
We were so happy to have
triumphed over two schools; we
had a few ups and downs, but
persevered and our efforts saw us
rise to the top!
Pictured on the right are the four
team members from Hosn.
We done to all girls who played for
Brighton! Pictured are Mia and India (back row – L to R)
and Naimh and Katie (front row – L to R)
Another super week and I am very impressed with all the
dedication the Year 5 - 8 are showing towards their upcoming
exams. There is a great deal of purposeful activity going on and it
has been lovely to see the children supporting each other
Good Luck to the Under 13 BSME team who flew off to Muscat
yesterday. We can’t wait to hear all about how you got on, we are
sure you will do Brighton College and Fujairah proud!
Welcome to Will who joined Year 5 this week!
My name is Will and I am from the North East of England and I
have been in Abu Dhabi for 18 months.
Amongst many things, I enjoy playing sports such as skiing and
watersports and would love to take part in sports CCAs here at
Brighton College.
My favourite subjects are Art, Languages and Science. I like school
because I like learning new things and understanding different ideas.
My personal target is to be in the BSME games next year. I am
therefore fully aware that I will need to take up sports such as
basketball, swimming, athletics and football to do so. I cannot wait!

Thank you to our newly formed
Year 5 House Room monitors.
They have been doing a super
job of ensuring that no one
leaves the room messy. I am not
sure that it has ever looked so
tidy!
Well done Max, Dia, Rumaysa,
Anais, Nour , Zayed and
Teagan!

I completed my PADI
Open Water Diving
qualification in Fujairah
over the winter holidays.
There were five people in
our group and firstly we
trained in a swimming pool
before we went to Snoopy
Island and the Three Rocks.
I was the youngest in the
group, but that didn’t hold
me back! The best part of
the training was completing
my first open water dive – I
loved every second of it!

This month’s competition is to invent a board
game based on the value of Tolerance…
You can create the actual game, or you can just
write out the rules, with a design of the game.
All entries to be handed in to Miss Sands by the
