An introduction to our short courses.Following on from our very successful Spring Workshop Week we are delighted to o!er another range of exciting workshops for the Autumn.

Easton Walled Gardens are nationally important 400 year old gardens open to the public in a beautiful corner of south Lincolnshire conveniently situated just o! the A1 (see map on back page).

Our recently renovated coach house along with a variety of learning spaces are ideal for our short courses - a beautiful and inspiring location.

Our pretty tearoom will be open o!ering home made cakes and lunches, but you are welcome to bring your own packed lunch.

This is one of our most popular courses. Create your own willow bird for your home or garden using English willows in a variety of colours, some of which are grown in Lincolnshire. The birds are created with a random weave technique and you can choose the type of bird you would like to make. The most simple and popular outcomes include chickens, pheasants and ducks.

This course is suitable for beginners. All materials, notes and tools will be supplied, but you may prefer to bring your favourite secateurs.

Roses are expensive to buy but, with the right care, can give a lifetime of pleasure. Learn everything you wanted to know about rose care including how to choose the perfect rose for a particular site. Discuss and learn about di!erent soils and how that a!ects the growth of plants, roses in particular. You are welcome to bring along a mug full of soil from your garden, so you can find out exactly what type you have and what will grow best in it.

Helpful information on how to plant, prune, dead head, feed and general care throughout the year of roses will be discussed along with reproduction and propagation. This workshop will give you all the knowledge you need to grow and look after your roses from a single climber to a whole rose garden.

Spring Workshop Week comment


Ever wondered how the professionals make those stunning festive wreaths? Come and let us show you how it’s done and be the envy of all your neighbours.

You will be taken step by step through the process of making a wreath with wire rings and moss, which can then be decorated with the supplied materials. Sue will also talk about how she grows the plants you use so that you can make your own in future years. Sue will be on hand to assist you on a one to one basis and you will be able to work at your own pace to create a very personal and special piece of work for you to take home. Armed with your new knowledge you will be able to create wreaths for all occasions in the comfort of your own home.

Festive Wreath MakingHand Printed Card Making Workshop

Working with one of our favourite and very popular tutors, learn how to produce a series of unique decorative cards and prints, which are easily adaptable for any occasion. This is a great way to give someone something unique for a special occasion.

Experiment with simple hand printed techniques using everyday materials such as leaves and other natural objects and small lino blocks to produce wonderfully textured and beautiful images. All of the techniques you can replicate at home and adapt to make small gift books and journals. Basic materials will be included, but please do bring with you a selection of papers and printing making equipment if you have them.

This is an introductory day to painting furniture and interior accessories such as lamps in French and Swedish antique, distressed finishes. It will give you the knowledge to start painting at home successfully.

We start the day talking about the ways we can make preparation quicker and easier without the need for hours of sanding. We will discuss the di!erent paints, products and materials needed and what to spend a little more money on. We will not be using ‘one coat wonder’ paints as this will be proper painting for beginners. We will practice 2 techniques, authentic distressing and crackling on boards.

Then with a choice of a wastebin or tray to complete in one of the techniques to take home to impress family and friends. There are lots of lovely paint colours to choice from. A busy and inspirational day.

Painting Techniques for Furniture

Needlefelt is created by repeatedly applying special needles into wool fleece, this tangles the fibres together to enable you to model and create your own sculpture.

So if you have always wanted to learn a new craft technique and can’t sew, then needlefelting is for you.

In this workshop you will learn to turn Shetland, Merino and local Jacobs wool into 3D animal shapes by using felting needles. Everyone will begin by learning how to sculpt an owl out of the wool and practice using the di!erent sized needles. Participants will also have time to make an animal of their choice, so you will have your very own little pet to take home or to give away. These little pets can easily be transformed into a unique brooch.

All materials required are supplied.

Wet Felted Flower Workshop Stained Glass Workshop

This is another great workshop for learning a new craft technique. Wet felt making is a simple process which will enable you to make a flat piece of felt by mixing colourful Merino wool and silk fibres - this then enables you to create vibrant and unique wet felted flowers. These flowers can be used to brighten up cushions or other soft furnishings, or even turned into fashion accessories such as a brooch or headband.

In this workshop you have the opportunity to make two types of flowers. This class is very enjoyable and an excellent introduction to wet felt making.

All materials required are supplied.

This was an extremely popular course in our Spring workshop week.

Although glass making and painting have moved on since the earlier windows that we see from the thirteenth century, the basic processes used to produce them has changed very little.

When making a small leaded stained glass panel in an introductory stained glass workshop we start with practising the glass cutting and getting used to the tools before cutting the chosen glass to fit the selected pattern. A variety of patterns are provided to choose from and there is a good selection of glass of di!erent colours and textures, allowing everyone to make their own unique and individual panel.

With all the glass cut we move on to cutting the lead came to hold the glass pieces together, working on boards with lead knives and farrier horseshoe nails.

With everything fitting to the pattern, the final process of soldering the piece together takes place and then there is the opportunity to see how the colours chosen look as the completed panel is held up to the light.

Within the group everyone is shown how to use all tools, materials and processes safely, and at the end of the day take home their very own stained glass panel.

With the recent revival in knitting people of all ages are taking up their knitting needles for the first time. Once you have learnt the basics of knitting the opportunities for expanding your talents are endless. Knitting can be taken anywhere and once the basics are learned it is very therapeutic and addictive!

In this workshop you will learn the basics of needle sizes and yarn types, how to cast on, garter stitch and stocking stitch and how to cast o!. A basic pattern will be available for you to take home and create your own cushion cover or small blanket. Your first set of knitting needles and some wool will be provided.

Crochet Workshop

Thursday 10th October

Crochet is the French word for ‘hook’. Knitting involves working a series of stitches on two or more needles. Crochet involves working one stitch on one ‘hook’. Many people, wrongly assume, that the intricate stitches are di"cult to create but really all you need is a little patience and to relax! Once you have mastered the basics it is easy to create your own basic designs and projects.

In this workshop you will learn how to hold a crochet hook, hook sizes and which wool they are best suited to, chain stitch, double crochet and treble stitch. We will then go to make a granny square or you can choose to make a simple mobile phone cover. Once you get started you will be hooked! Your first crochet hook and some wool will be provided.

Home-baked cakes and biscuits are the best because they have been made with love and good ingredients! Spend an afternoon making some nostalgic treats, perfect for afternoon tea or a vintage tea party with friends. A keen baker and advocate of the home-made cake and biscuit, Amy Claridge will help you bake a sweet, moist and moreish lemon drizzle cake; fantastically fun retro jammy dodgers and jam tarts plus Viennese Whirls.

Hands-on workshop; please bring an apron and something to take your goodies home in.

A larder shelf bulging with jars of preserved fruit is a very satisfying sight, and promises delicious treats to come. Topped with a fabric ‘hat’ and a pretty label, a jar of home-made jam or chutney also makes a thoughtful gift! Spend a morning with keen preserver Amy Claridge when she’ll be showing you how to make lovely jam with autumnal fruits and chutney which will mature just in time for Christmas.

Hands-on workshop; take home a jar of each. Please bring an apron, plus two jars.


Take home your own handmade paper, great for wrapping presents, craft and scrapbook projects, or writing those special hand-written letters all in your own unique design. This workshop will teach you how to use plant materials to make decorative, colourful, and unique papers with the things that grow at Easton and in Jonathan’s own garden. Choose to attend one or both days according to your interests!

Day one Making paper using the petals, blossom, leaves, fruit, perfumes and dyes that are in the plants such as centaurea, da!odil, dahlia, lavender, marigold, rose hyacinth, tagetes, tulip and banana peel!

Day two Making paper using the fibres that are within the leaves, stalks, and seeds of plants such as hops, rose briar, nettle, Phormium (New Zealand Flax), hemp, cotton, greater reed mace (bulrush), clematis seeds, horseradish & jute.

You can either book both days or attend one of the workshops. All materials are supplied.

Making your own chocolates is incredibly satisfying and this workshop aims to give you a broad overview of the world of fine chocolate. Starting with an introduction to the history of chocolate and how it is made, taking you on a tasting journey of single origin chocolate and how to blend their natural flavours by pairing it with great ingredients. You’ll then learn the secrets of making your own tasty ganache, tempering chocolate on a marble slab (which you can do at home), hand-dipping and finishing the chocolates. You’ll create your own batch of beautiful chocolates to take away and share (or most likely devour yourself!).

Rib Frame Basket Making Workshop

Creative Writing Workshop Unlocking the Secret Garden

Saturday 12th October Sunday 13th October

Unleash your creative writing skills.

Using the gardens as your inspiration to produce both poetry and descriptive pieces of prose. Where does the garden take your imagination?

Phil’s style of writing is based upon traditional values of literature. He uses the building blocks of literary techniques and aims to evoke quality writing from his students. Fusing inspiration with a skeletal framework of literary devices you will produce a finished written piece of wonderment.

Please bring a notebook/paper and writing implements and be prepared to share your newly found talents!

Learn to make a small, round basket with a handle suitable for storing eggs or fruit. This simple technique was traditionally used by agricultural workers and travellers and can be made from a variety of hedgerow materials as well as prepared willow. Everyone will make their own basket to take home and you will be able to continue creating unique baskets from home with the knowledge that you have gained from this simple technique during the workshop.

Working with copper foiling in stained glass is ideal for producing lightweight, decorative items.

In an introductory copper foil workshop we start by practising the glass cutting and getting used to the tools. Then, having chosen their coloured glass, everyone will cut the pieces for their first design, learn about the grinding of the glass edges and the application of the copper foil tape. Finally the pieces are soldered together, a hook applied and you have a colourful sun-catcher to hang in your window.

A variety of patterns are provided to choose from and there is a good selection of glass of di!erent colours and textures, allowing everyone to make their own individual pieces.

Within the group everyone is shown how to use all tools, materials and processes safely, and at the end of the day take home their very own stained glass sun-catchers.

Meet your tutors - chosen for their skills, approachability and experience

Alison WallingAlison proved to be a very popular tutor at Easton Walled Gardens when we ran our first set of workshops in May.

Alison is a willow artist based in Lincoln with a background in teaching the arts. Alison then moved into Horticulture and Garden Design and started working

with Living Willow 14 years ago, studied with several basketmakers and began to use willow for making sculptures. Her work has formed part of two award-winning gardens at Hampton Court Flower Show and commissions include a three-metre high Lincoln Imp for the Cultural Olympiad, woodland animals, a living willow maze and Lincoln Red calf for the Lincolnshire Limewoods project, and a large grey seal for a Primary School. Teaching regularly around the County and giving talks and demonstrations, Alison aims to share her love of willow as a plant worth growing and using, particularly in a county with a rich history associated with the basket making industries.

Hester CresswellHester has been sourcing and selling antiques and completing interior decorating projects for many years. It was having a love of French and English country house interiors that she realised she could breathe new life into some of the more tired but beautiful pieces.

Alongside painting and selling furniture she has been running workshops from her home in Lincolnshire passing on inspirations and decorating know how to many students over the years. She also has a studio full of vintage and antique furniture and accessories.

Cathi PrinceCathi is another favourite Tutor here and her Stained Glass workshops are very popular.

Stained Glass fulfils a love of colour that has been important in all of Cathi Prince’s working life. After training at Winchester School of Art in printmaking

and illustration she spent several years with a fine art publishing studio while producing her own colourful paintings and limited edition silkscreen prints for the international art market.

When she was introduced to stained glass with its variety of colours and textures, it was a natural progression in her work and became her sole occupation.

Based in her studio in South Lincolnshire she is involved in several areas of stained glass. It is here that bespoke commissioning work is carried out, designing and making leaded stained glass panels for doors and windows for a variety of buildings, both old and new.

Copper foiled work produces a variety of gift ideas, from sun-catchers to mirrors and candle-boxes. The element of playing and enjoying the medium moves ideas on, so that there is usually something new on the go.

Part of her time is also spent teaching the basic processes of working in stained glass in introductory workshops in her own studio and elsewhere.


Amy ClaridgeCooking and baking enthusiast Amy is a regular on the county’s cookery demonstrator scene and enjoys talking about food on BBC Radio Lincolnshire. In the past she has been a Masterchef competitor, a finalist in Gordon Ramsay’s

search for the next Fanny Cradock and a Local Food Hero for ITV1’s Countrywise Kitchen. Highlights of her year include judging preserves at county events but she likes nothing more than pottering about in her own kitchen creating seasonal dishes from home-grown and local food.

Mary Lamont Mary has been knitting and crocheting since she was six years old. Mary is a great believer in the therapeutic benefits of knitting and crocheting, she also believes that if she does not pass on the skills her Grandmother taught her

and that she has picked up over forty years of knitting and crocheting that these skills will eventually be lost forever. Mary designs her own patterns, works from modern patterns, adapts vintage patterns to modern yarns, designs and makes crochet rugs from recycled fabric.

Rob BoswijkRob was born into a rose growing family during the early 1960’s and was found regularly walking the rose gardens at home where he lived - some 5,000 roses were planted in a formal situation. After attending Pershore College of Horticulture, Rob continued the family business where

they grew in excess of half a million roses a year for the mail-order market.

Rob regularly attend flower shows such as Chelsea, Hampton Court Palace, Shrewsbury, Royal Show & East of England to name a few, and has won every medal under the sun including the illusive RHS Gold Medal on more than one occasion.

Nowadays Rob advises independent garden centres but still has a keen connection to the rose, as it in his blood. As a former Press O"cer, Treasurer to the British Rose Growers Association and Chairman of the International Rose Festival Committee at Hampton Court and chair to the International Rose Trials in Glasgow, Rob has sat in most of the honoured chairs of the British Rose Industry.

Sue JarvisSue is an experienced instructor who likes to encourage others to use their creative skills, even if they think they don’t have any. She uses natural materials in her work such as foliage, seed heads and the interesting textures of stems. Her successful workshops for Christmas wreath making in Rutland and Cambridgeshire have encouraged many people to return year after year to improve their skills. Not only do they leave with a very personal piece of work which they have created, but they do so after enjoying the relaxed and informal atmosphere of her teaching methods.

Eve MarshallEve creates unique and realistic felt art pieces. She studied Fine Arts at university and spent most of her time painting with watercolours until she bought a felting kit in 2004. Since then she has been exploring the medium by making animal & flower brooches, wall art, cushions, bags, and kits. Eve teaches courses throughout Lincolnshire for people of all ages and abilities.

Eve has exhibited at art galleries and shows throughout Britain and America. Eve has had her tutorials published in Your Home Magazine in March 2013 and taught workshops at the Country Living Fair in London. She sells her artwork in shops in Peterborough, London, Lincoln and Folkingham.

Phil BallPhil started writing at the age of 16, firing o! his first newspaper epistle about the breakup of The Beatles. Phil won several ‘Golden Pen Awards ‘ for newspaper writing and went on to write theatre columns for the Nottingham Post.

Philip has been an education professional for 38 years, including over a decade as a head teacher. He has headed workshops at the Warwick Words Festival and for the Workers Educational Association. He has been a reviewer for 20 years and regularly contributes to a variety of educational magazines. He also has poetry anthologies in the National Poetry Library and now acts as Literacy Co-ordinator for a large Derby Comprehensive.

Jonathan KorejkoJonathan lives and works in the small village of Timberland, Lincolnshire. He also travels all over the UK exhibiting his work and demonstrating papermaking at many venues, including National Trust properties (Sissinghurst Castle ,Lyme Park), RHS gardens (Hyde

Hall, Wisley). botanic collections (Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh, National Botanic Garden of Wales) museums (The Potteries Museum, The Linen) schools, colleges, and craft fairs/trade fairs. He works with all age groups and ability levels, and has developed special techniques, tools, equipment to make it possible for everyone to produce good results.

His products include handmade paper, paper products, papermaking tools, materials, equipment, woodcuts, and greetings cards.

Rosella GugliottaRosella is the Owner-Chocolatier at Okie Coco Chocolate Alchemy, handcrafting exquisite fresh chocolates using the finest natural ingredients.

Rosella is passionate about helping people discover how chocolate should taste, encouraging you to try new flavours and experiment in the kitchen.

Rosella Initially made chocolates as a hobby, but quickly realised she had a talent for it when friends and family were constantly asking for more! She invested in professional equipment and fervently studied the traditional techniques of the artisan chocolatier, soon realising she had no choice but to start her own chocolate company. Rosellas creations are just too good not to share!”

Rosella is passionate about helping people discover how chocolate should taste, encouraging you to try new flavours and experiment in the kitchen.

Val LittlewoodVal is already well known to visitors to Easton Walled Gardens for her British Bee show “Buzz” and for her art workshops. Val runs workshops here throughout the year and her friendly and knowledgeable style of teaching draws students from all over the area. An illustrator, designer and lecturer for many years she has worked for the major publishing companies, as a product designer for the giftware industry and as an art lecturer covering all aspects of illustration, design, painting, drawing, printmaking and decorative work, form beginners to degree level. She currently lives and works near Huntingdon and is working on a series of paintings, prints and drawings of the local area …and of course continues her paintings, research and talks on British Bees.
