Our Annual September Workshop was well attended and received by our Hurley Volunteers. I commend our Hurley Lobby Shop Auxilians for an impressive record of 31 out of 38 attendances. Thanks to wonderful leadership in that service area. Our overall number of volunteers attending was 90, producing a friendly atmosphere of sincere interest and cooperation. We received valuable resource information from our speakers and handouts that were available to all. We are grateful to the Hurley Foundation and staff for our yearly Flu Shots and Blood Pressure service. It is wonderful to begin this Auxilian year 2016-2017 with such great interest from our volunteers. Please continue this enthusiasm by supporting our November 17, 2016 Bake Sale. We especially need bakers to make this a successful fundraiser . Our new chairperson, Lenore Calvert is inviting everyone to participate by baking or by cash donations. Our Hurley employees, staff and visitors look forward to this annual fundraiser. More information will be forthcoming in the next few weeks. Hurley Auxiliary will be well represented at the ECD (09-28-16) and MAHA (10- 10-16 thru 10-12-16) Conferences. Thanks to all who made their reservations on time. Hurley Lobby Shop will host their Holiday Open House December 01-02- 2016,just in time for your Christmas shopping. Permit me to add a personal note: I am sincerely grateful and proud of the support of prayers, cards and visits from our Hurley Auxiliary Members and Hurley Foundation staff. My relatives and friends were in awe of the caring support we received upon my husband, Richard's passing. I have prayed for all who prayed for us and who are still praying with us. I thank God for each one of you. Thelma Watson, President President Thelma Watson President Elect Regenia Jeffries Secretary Lucille Shamly Treasurer Bonnie Pace Asst. It is wonderful to begin this Auxilian year 2016-2017 with such great interest from

fundraiser. More information will be forthcoming in the next few weeks.

Hurley Auxiliary will be well represented at the ECD (09-28-16) and MAHA (10-

Volunteer Director Report Great turn out at the Service Workshop September 20. We had over 90 attend. We also sent out

notes from the meeting and the annual safety requirements to those that were not able to

attend. The safety requirements are due back November 1st. Joint Commission requires that

all staff, including volunteers fulfill their annual safety education.

Thank you to all those that completed the Volunteer Satisfaction Survey at the Workshop.

Some ideas that we will incorporate immediately because of the survey are:

*Distribute News You Can Use (hospital newsletter) in Volunteer Services areas.

*Change the Volunteer Services voice message.

*Name tags at meetings.

If you were not at the Service Workshop and if you have any ideas for Volunteer Satisfaction

please submit those ideas.

It’s flu season– we posted the flu vaccination times @Volunteer Sign in area. If anyone needs

assistance let me know.

Looking forward to the Auxiliary Luncheons starting up again and seeing everyone. I also

will bring the PINK books to the luncheons for those that didn’t receive one.

The Emergency Room Volunteer Greeter enhances communication between the healthcare team and patients and their families. Volunteers greet family members and pa-tients, respond to needs as they arise, and communicate with the ED staff. The volunteer continuously rounds on patients and their families in the lobby area and in the treatment areas, providing updates, offering comfort and addressing problems and concerns. Pre-forms all duties in a manner that promotes team concept and reflect the mission and phi-losophy of Hurley Medical Center. Last year Hurley Medical Center Emergency Room saw over 100,000 patients. The Auxiliary volunteers make an extreme impact to customer service when they are in the Emergency Room Waiting Area. Auxilian Winona Hinton is the chair of this area. Cur-rently there are 4 Auxiliary volunteers helping in the Emergency Room. If you know of anyone interested please talk to Winona Hinton. She can share with you what it’s like to be a Emergency Room Volunteer Greeters. Thank you Winona for all you do.

Cut N Sew Report

Submitted by Marigery.Gruenberg, Cut & Sew Chair Hello everyone! I am Margery Gruenberg (Marge), your new person heading up the Cut & Sew Service as Bonnie Pace has moved to a different position in the Auxiliary. You can usually find me in the Gift Shop or Surgical Lounge and whatever project the hospital needs me on. During the months of June, July, and August, Auxiliary Members have donated 38 Baby Hats, 86 Baby Booties, 4 Knitted Baby Blankets, 3 Preemie Blankets, 1 Toddler Crib Size Blanket, 10 Breast Cancer Drainage Pouches, 9 Fetal demise Blankets, 2 Fetal Demise Small Buntings, 6 Gait Belts, 3 Hand Knitted Shawls and 15 Walker Bags. This amounts to 177 hours of time The Grand Blanc Senior Center has donated 4 Cancer Hats and 5 Baby Hats and 3 Adult Hats. All of these items add up to 642 hours and 177 items donated by 4 of our members (and one sister in law who donates a lot of time and items). Thank you for donating that many hours of your summer. I know the items are appreciated when I deliver them to the different departments. I know many of us have had illness and deaths in our families, and who like to work in the summer. That is for vacations and a little time to get our ducks back in a row for the fall and winter hours. If you know of anyone who sews, knits or crochet we can always use more hands to help. Thank you again for all your time and efforts. We have received a lot of yarn for projects and we also have fabric that needs to be used. Please contact me and I will be glad to show you what we have on hand. I also have thread and ribbons, so you should not have any expense involved just the valuable time and I will have more space. I also have patterns for the projects and will be glad to help with the cutting if needed. You can contact me on my phone 810-258-2906 or email @ [email protected]

How can you as a Volunteer protect Patients’ Right to Privacy?

Know your Hospital’s rules. Make sure you have the right patient. Only repeat patient information to someone directly involved with their care and who needs the information to do their job. Only access information you need to know to do your job. Do not repeat any information you overhear. Do not tell stories to friends, family members or others. If you are not sure, ASK. If you have a concern-Let someone know. If you accidently disclose personal information tell your supervisor. TIPS Turn the paper over. Speak in a soft voice. Don not discuss patient information in the elevator, cafeteria, etc. Properly discard confidential information. Close and lock drawers and cabinets.
