AEF PROGRAM ACTION PLAN

The Auxiliary Emergency Fund (AEF) was established in 1969. The AEF provides financial assistance to eligible members during times of financial crises or weather related emergencies and natural disasters and promotes awareness and knowledge of the program.

What can you as a Chairman or Unit Member do to help Auxiliary Members learn and get information about AEF.

1. As a District Chairman you should familiarize each Unit Chairman with what the AEF can or cannot do and where to find the current applications and information.

2. As a Unit Chairman you should promote the AEF program within your Unit.

Have printed applications and AEF brochures available at meetings and at the Post.

Be knowledgeable of the process in order to help members when asked for help.

Include all AEF information in the “New Member Packets”

Help the Department Auxiliary Fund exceed its total donation from the previous year by supporting Department and Unit functions.

Members:

Support fundraisers sponsored by your Unit and your Department.

Make personal donation to the AEF, (see National Awards)

Units:

Put an AEF donation can in your Post, solicit local Business for monetary or In-kind donations to your Unit for the Auxiliary Emergency Fund. (Remember, must have current Solicitation License)

Schedule an annual “Members Helping Members” night at your Post. This is an opportunity to share information, telling what makes a member eligible for AEF. Have membership applications available so that a new member may sign up when they hear of the benefits the AEF offers.

Programs and Activities:

1. AEF brochures are available through the Department at alafl.org and ALAforVeterans.org.

2. Be sure to use the current form directions to make the evaluation and processing are completed in a timely manner an incomplete application will slow the application process.

3. Frequently asked Questions and additional information can be found on the AEF page

on the National Web Site.

4. The following core rules apply to Auxiliary Emergency Fund (AEF) Temporary assistance to eligible members during: Financial crises when no other source of aid is available to pay for shelter, food and utilities. Weather related emergencies and natural disasters. Educational training for those that lack the necessary skills for employment or to upgrade to competitive workforce sills.

5. Assistance will NOT be granted to pay accumulated debts (Credit Cards etc.) or medical expenses.

Eligibility:

1. National reads Persons who have been members of the American Legion Auxiliary for at least the immediate past two (2) years and whose current membership dues are paid at the time the emergency occurred, may apply for assistance. (Paid Membership of three (3) years)

2. Department requires minimum of three (3) years of membership in the American

Legion Auxiliary, with current membership dues paid. Applications must be completed and submitted to Department Headquarters for approval of the Finance Committee.

3. Department will give the maximum grant of $1200.

4. National will give the maximum of $2400, disbursed as the AEF Grant Committee determines.

National AEF Awards:

A. Citation Plaque Recognition – Given to one Unit and one Department contributing the largest donation (per capita) to the AEF

B. Citation and Lapel Pin – Presented to any individual contributor donating $50 or more. The citation form can be found www.ALAforVeterans.org. Please send donation form to Department Chairman to be submitted to National. Citations may be printed by the Unit and given to the individual contributor.

C. Certificate – One Department from each Division contributing the largest amount (per capita) will receive a certificate and special recognition at National Convention. Total donations per Department will be tracked by National Headquarters and will be divided by Department’s current membership totals as of _____________

Department Awards:

A. Certificate to each Unit in a grouping for $100 donations. B. Plaque to the Unit and District for highest donation C. An award to the Unit that turns in a narrative for the best all – around fundraiser. D. An award to the Unit that turns in a narrative for the most unique fundraiser.

FUNDRAISING IDEA FOR AEF

1. Have a “Members helping Members” night, maybe sponsor a dinner 2. Hold 50/50’s 3. Bake sale or bake less sale. Send letters to your members asking for donations on how

much they would spend if they baked a cake, pie or cookies etc. 4. Garage sale 5. Collect loose change at your meeting; get piggy bank in your Districts mode of

transportation. 6. Have basket of cheer or scratch off tickets, 7. Have Roadkill or Steak bingo. 8. Valentine’s Day dinner with raffles, maybe a cake walk etc.
