Jan King Jan King was born in Cunnamulla, Queensland. She studied widely both in Australia and overseas; from Academia di Belle Arti in Perugia, to the National Art School, to the New York Studio School. King is known for her sculptures made from waxed and painted steel, which she exploits to its full potential to create fluid and lyrical works that contradict our expectations of this material. King won the Woollahra Sculpture Prize in 2002, and has been awarded travel grants from Australia Council and Art Omi. Her work is included in the collections of Art Bank, Casula Powerhouse, University of Technology, Sydney and Macquarie Bank, amongst others.

Peter Powditch Peter Powditch was born in Sydney in 1942 and is now based on the New South Wales North Coast. He studied at The National Art School before leaving to pursue private lessons with John Olsen and sculptor Lyndon Dadswell. Powditch was at the forefront of Australian pop art, recognised for his depictions of the female form. Such works were selected for inclusion in the 2014/2015 Art Gallery of New South Wales exhibition ‘Pop to Popism.’ Recent works have been smaller in scale, abstract sculptures and paintings in soft tones. In 1972 Powditch won the Sulman Prize, Wollongong Art Prize and Gold Coast City Art Prize and in 1984 he was made a member of the Order of Australia for services to art. Powditch’s work is represented in all major state and regional galleries throughout Australia.

Roy Jackson

Roy Jackson moved to Sydney as a young man and studied at the National Art School, Darlinghurst. He then returned to

London, the city of his birth, to study at the Sutton School of Art and the Wimbledon College of Art, where he completed a

National Diploma in Design (Painting).

Jackson's gestural, subtly coloured, abstract works have appeared in a number of solo and group shows. This year his work was selected by influential curator Terence Maloon to

appear in ‘Abstraction,' an exhibition aiming to show the continuing longevity and vitality of abstraction as a creative language in Australian art. In 2003 he featured in ‘The Way of

the Brush,' curated by Sioux Garside at the War Memorial Gallery and the University of Sydney. In September of 2013, Roy

will have a retrospective 1963 - 2013 at eth Drill Hall Gallery in Canberra curated by its new director Terence Maloon and

Sioux Garside.

Jackson's work is included in a number of important collections including the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of

Victoria, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Artbank, New England Regional Art Museum, Maitland City Art Gallery, and the

A mere breath makes operatic cracks in the partitions – blurs the gyrations of the

termite eaten roofs- scatters the fireplace walls –wipes out the windows…

A mere breath scatters the fireplace walls.

Michael Buzacott

Michael Buzacott was born in Sydney in 1950, and studied at the National Art School between 1969 and 1973. After finishing his studies he worked as a lecturer at his alma mater, along with the South Australian School of Art, the Sydney Gallery School and the Mitchell College, Bathurst. During this time Buzacott honed his practice, with travel and further study in Europe, North Africa and the United States having a great influence on his artistic development. Buzacott’s first solo exhibition was in 1977 at the Contemporary Art Society in Adelaide, and since then he has regularly exhibited at galleries such as Irving Sculpture Gallery and A-Space on Cleveland. The artist has also been included in a number of important group exhibitions in Australia and overseas, such as the 3rd Sculpture Triennial at Heide Park and Art Gallery, Sculptors in Saitama, Japan and the Mildura Sculpture Triennial 1982. Recently he was chosen for inclusion in Abstraction, curated by Terrance Maloon and displayed at the Drill Hall Gallery, Canberra. His work is included in many private and public collections including Artbank, Australian National University and the Gold Coast Regional Art Gallery.

Peter Godwin Peter Godwin was born in Sydney in 1953 and studied at Hornsby College and the National Art School, Sydney. The artist worked as a sessional lecturer in painting and drawing at the latter after his graduation in1983 until 2005. While he produced his own work throughout this time, his perfectionist nature prevented him from regularly exhibiting until 2002, when he was in his fifties. Once he began to show at Defiance Gallery he enjoyed instant success, quickly attracting the attention of Australian collectors and enjoying sell out exhibitions. Godwin’s work is represented in private, corporate and public collections including the Art Gallery of South Australia and Parliament House, Canberra. He was awarded the Art Gallery of New South Wales Gruner Prize in 1979 and again in 1985, was the recipient of the Mosman Art Prize in 2004 and was selected as a finalist in the Art Gallery of NSW Sulman Prize in 2007. The unique character of Godwin's work springs partly from his use of egg tempera. It handles like an oil-based paint but its fast-drying properties allow him to quickly build up layer upon layer. Godwin will scratch back into the surfaces, creating thin, meandering lines that break up the dark recessive planes he uses as a backdrop. The artist regularly paints the interior of his studio and while these paintings have strong abstract elements the objects they contain are easily recognizable: chairs, easels, squid, tribal masks from New Guinea, a lemon, a skull, a dead bird, even a harpsichord. Godwin loves to paint things that are old and familiar, returning to the same motifs because he finds there is always another way of approaching them, something to add to his store of perceptions. In 2012 Godwin travelled on an artist’s expedition to Mornington Sanctuary in the Central Kimberley, and in 2013 Godwin travelled to Hong Kong and the Guilin mountains of China. These trips had a great influence on his practice as he could immerse himself in these landscapes and create works en plein air, which he developed in his studio over the next few years. In 2014 Godwin travelled to Dorset specifically to work with Master Printmaker Andrew Smith, who specialises in large scale works. This two month stint produced exciting carborundum reliefs which explore the medium in a unique way.
