Availon’s internal crane system is a real feather-weight. Weighing only 200 kilos, it is one thousand times lighter than a heavy lift crane and can be quickly and easily transported to any WTG site.

To unload the generator, heat exchanger or other large component from the truck, all you need is a small crane at the base of the turbine. No special crane padis required. Smaller cranes are obviously much lighter than their 200 ton counterparts and can generally be obtained much faster.

Logic beats logistics. Replacing a defective generator or transformer is a big problem.

And it requires a big piece of equipment – usually a heavy lift crane that weighs a whopping 200 tons. This is added to the many potential problems and already daunting task of swapping out a large component.

Is a suitable heavy lift crane available? Do you need to request quotes? Are the access road and hardstanding even designed to handle heavy equipment or will they have to be paved? Are the weather conditions favorable? The entire operation involves exten-sive logistics and so many questions to which Availon has developed a surprising answer.

Internal crane system instead of external problems.

Availon’s internal crane system for Vestas® WTGs (V66 VCS®, V80, V90 2.0 MW). proves that you can elegantly hoist large components without a heavy lift crane. All these turbines are equipped with crane rails and trolleys with design capacities of up to eight tons.

The crane trolley is used to install a winch that holds a special lifting beam. The lifting beam is adjustable to accommodate variable sizes of components and different types of generators. It hoists every component right into the nacelle for installation.

This internal crane system eliminates the need for heavy lift cranes with all the time, cost and organizational coordination that they require.

Uplifting in almost any weather.

Heavy lift cranes cannot be operated safely once the wind reaches a certain speed. Then, if the wind fi nally dies down enough to allow the crane to work, the weather conditions may still be too poor to permit the removal of the nacelle housing. Being light and large, the housing picks up gusts like a sail, even in low wind conditions.

Availon’s internal crane system, by contrast, is largely unaff ected by weather conditions. If you need to replace a generator, you simply lower the old components through an open panel in the nacelle fl oor. New components enter the turbine via the same route. That means you can even replace transformers in light rain.
