Plan Design EnableAtkins delivers technical excellence and works on the most technically challenging and time-critical infrastructure projects in the world. Whether it’s the conceptual planning for a new passenger terminal, the full design for an air traffic control tower, or the improvement of a management process, we plan, design, and enable solutions for our clients.
Shaping the future of airports
For over 50 years, Atkins has been working with government bodies, local authorities, airport authorities and operators, and construction companies to deliver solutions for an array of airport projects.
Atkins can assist with each phase of planning, designing, and implementing projects. Our vast portfolio includes a diverse range of assignments—from planning new airports to designing the systems within them to implementing small alterations or system enhancements.
Our expertise and understanding of both airport operations and the airline industry allow us to develop innovative, cost-effective, and workable solutions.
IntroductionAtkins is a multidisciplined engineering, architectural, planning, and construction management company. Our mission is to plan, design, and enable successful capital programs for our clients.
Atkins is consistently ranked among the top engineering, planning, architecture, sciences, and construction management companies in the U.S. by Engineering News-Record.
Effective management of an airport encompasses a demanding set of responsibilities and challenges. Of these, handling the processes involved with obtaining Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) funding and managing the capital improvement program for development projects represent two of the most difficult. Of distinct advantage to our clients is Atkins’ familiarity with FAA grant management and regulations, as well as our established relationships with staff at all levels of the agency—from regional Airport District Offices (ADO) to the headquarters office in Washington, DC.
Through our many years of aviation consulting experience, Atkins offers professional assistance in the following areas:
• Writing and submitting funding preapplications and applications for FAA and state grants
• Producing and submitting all paperwork and supporting documentation required for FAA and state reimbursement
• Interfacing with the local agencies that administer airport improvements funding
• Lobbying the FAA on behalf of clients to obtain maximum passenger facility charge, Airport Improvement Program entitlement, and discretionary funding
• Organizing and leading all required meetings related to airport planning and capital development programs

Terminals
Committed to innovative, functional, and effective terminal designAs the focal point of any airport, the airport passenger terminal must accommodate a diverse array of requirements and users. An effective terminal design considers the various flows of passengers and baggage and the needs of distinct user groups including passengers, airlines, airport terminal management, and operations.
Atkins’ designs address individual airspace capacity and air traffic control procedures; typical aircraft mix; runway, taxiway, and apron capacity; land access and parking; population catchment area; and customer service expectations.
Atkins professionals have the skills and experience to translate applicable planning issues into optimal terminal designs that satisfy user requirements, and we have been instrumental in planning, designing, and enabling airport facilities—both large and small—around the world.

Aircraft rescue and firefighting facilities (ARFF)
Aiding emergency response crews Atkins designs state-of-the-art ARFFs that enhance airport safety and security. Our designs help train and equip emergency response crews to handle any situation—from plane crashes and acts of terrorism to hazardous waste disposal and medical decontamination.
Our award-winning ARFF designs reflect our ability to blend housing, training, administrative, and vehicular spaces into an aesthetically pleasing facility that effectively supports the divergent functional uses. These designs accommodate the need for immediate response times, clear lines of sight to air traffic control towers, and sophisticated security systems.

Air traffic control towers
Delivering safe, practical, and cost-effective air traffic control towers that are aesthetically pleasing The safe, efficient, and cost-effective movement of aircraft is critical to successful airport operations. Support services, such as those provided from air traffic control and radar approach control facilities, must be continually operational to provide uncompromised safety for pilots and passengers. As such, Atkins fully supports and integrates the critical role of these facilities into our air traffic control tower designs.
Atkins has an in-depth understanding of airport information technology systems, and our engineers are skilled at resolving IT design and interface issues through the specification, development, and implementation of highly advanced communications and control systems.

Support facilities
Keeping the airport business moving forwardAtkins’ top priority is to ensure our clients’ success. For airports, this includes providing support for a demanding set of responsibilities and challenges—from baggage handling to passenger ground transportation to equipment maintenance and storage.
Through close coordination and collaboration with airport clients, we determine specific goals and objectives for each support facility. We then draw upon our decades of aviation consulting expertise to develop effective programming and design documents that will fully support end user needs.
Understanding that safety is a primary consideration for both airport employees and travelers, our building designs comply with applicable codes while promoting comfort and ease of use. We are also committed to the incorporate of sustainable design components in an economical manner that does not compromise facility operations.
