  • Atkins knows aviation. We have been working closely with airports for more than 50 years. In fact, today nearly 200 million passengers safely arrive or depart from runways constructed from our designs. Atkins has worked at 36 of the top 50 airports in the United States.And in the last five years alone, we have managed more than $1 billion of runway-related construction projects.

    Atkins’ aviation projects range from small turf runways to major air carrier runways; from general aviation T-hangars to large hub terminal designs; and from new greenfield airports to renovations of existing facilities. In addition to our airport and airside projects, Atkins has designed for the “total airport community,” encompassing airport landsides, baggage systems, access roads, parking lots, security enhancements, and more. We also have teams of aeronautical engineers working closely with two of the world’s leading aircraft manufacturers to design the aircraft of the 21st century.

    We have learned to take something away from every project we complete and put it to work for our clients. When we discover a promising new technology or product, we propose it. If we can fast-track a project to help clients meet funding deadlines, we do it. And when we develop a professional relationship with an agency that has jurisdiction over airport development, we nurture it. Atkins considers every aspect of each aviation project, from the application of Federal Aviation Administration standards and guidelines to the final punch list at project completion.

    Atkins is no stranger to complex and unique planning projects at airports of all sizes in the United States and abroad. We are dedicated to solving the challenging issues facing the airport industry. Airport property use and revenue generation, planning for sustainability, facility flexibility, survey and electronic mapping, and safety risk assessments are all issues facing planners that are beyond the typical master-plan advisory circular.

    We understand these critical issues and apply an approach to planning and development that focuses on

    strategically addressing potential future conditions. Our planners consider innovative, far-reaching ideas, resulting in master plans and feasibility studies that are flexible, balanced, and tailored to the specific needs of each client and community.

    Planning 1. Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) Master Plan, Florida. Developed a comprehensive airport master plan due to significant changes in the type of operations and services offered, as well as reclassification of the airport from a general aviation airport to an Airport Index D-IV (commercial). Recommended upgrades included strengthening and expanding various aprons, taxiways, and runways to accommodate more demanding aircraft.

    2. Tri-Cities Regional Airport Master Plan Update, Tennessee. Produced master plan update to effectively plan for future demand, including a complete airport layout plan set in accordance with the FAA’s Advisory Circulars 150/5070-6B, Airport Master Plans and 150/5300-13, Change 14, Airport Design.

    3. Sebring Regional Airport Master Plan and Commerce Park, Florida. Created master plan update outlining proposed development at the airport for a 20-year planning period. This was critical to developing a new capital improvement plan, especially in light of plans for the facility to become a future regional air carrier airport.

    4. Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport Environmental Assessment and Permitting, Puerto Rico. Oversaw data collection, project management, determination of alternative development scenarios, mitigation options, permitting application process and sufficiency response, public meetings, and development of the National Environmental Policy Act environmental assessment (EA) and the Environmental Quality Board EA.

    5. Dayton International Airport General Consulting Services, Ohio. Conducted a Phase I environmental due diligence audit in accordance with FAA guidelines for a section of property proposed for constructing a new air traffic control tower.

    6. Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport Consulting Services, Florida. Responsible for the overall environmental planning, permitting, and mitigation plan development for the 4,037-acre relocation project.

    Everything at an airport begins with a plan. Atkins planners look at the big picture and develop comprehensive blueprints from which projects can be designed and constructed over the next 20 years and beyond. >

    Environmental

    Atkins provides professional services that involve a high level of technical expertise in the natural and cultural sciences, encompassing disciplines that range from archaeology to zoology. To support our aviation consulting services, our environmental engineers and scientists routinely provide stormwater master planning, design, permitting, and compliance;

    Phase I, II, and III environmental site assessments; asbestos, lead, and indoor air quality surveys and abatement; wetland delineations and permitting; National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation; and general environmental coordination and consultation.

    Atkins’ scientists frequently work side by side with engineers and

    other technical professionals on multidisciplined teams and contribute to projects that distinguish Atkins as an industry leader. This integrated approach enables us to address the complex regulatory issues and operational needs of our aviation clients in a comprehensive yet cost-effective manner.

    Atkins provides expertise, insight, and solutions for the environmental issues facing today’s airports.
