Chairman’s MessageThe end of the year 2011, closed on an upbeat note when APFT signed an agreement with Perbadanan Hal Ehwal Bekas Angkatan Tentera (PERHEBAT) to give training to their members who are leaving the service to begin civilian careers. APFT will be the service provider for training for PERHEBAT and the Armed Forces.

December also saw the largest number of cadets graduating from APFT. A total of 234 graduates completed their course. My congratulations to them for their hard work and determination to succeed, making their parents, sponsors and us at APFT proud. Many of those that graduated this period were not able to attend the ceremony as they are already working with MAS, AirAsia and Wings Air (Indonesia), and other airlines. We are proud to mention that we were instrumental in arranging for the placements of our cadets to some of these airlines. I would like to thank our VIP guest YB Dato’ Dr Awang Adek Hussin Deputy Minister of Finance, for finding time to grace our event. Also we were pleased that Capt. Dato’ Yahaya Abdul Rahman, Director of Flight Operations DCA, Malaysia kindly presented the scrolls and awards to the cadets.

In this year we have upgraded our facilities and equipment. Two new buses replaced the old buses and two new bowsers now facilitate the flight operations. We purchased two Seminoles from Piper to add to the twin-engine fleet. We look forward to a challenging but bright new year in 2012, and with the continuing support of the airlines, the DCA and other agencies we will continue to deliver quality and professional manpower into the aviation industry.

Thank you for your support and Happy New Year 2012.

Dato’ Faruk Othman

It was a historic event, when Perbadanan Hal Ehwal Bekas Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (PERHEBAT) signed a services and training agreement with APFT on 20 December 2011. APFT is to be one of the institutions that are recognised to train the servicemen before they leave the service and join civilian life. Dato’ Faruk as Chairman signed on behalf of APFT and Laksamana Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Ilyas Bin Haji Din (Bersara) Chairman of PERHEBAT signed on behalf of PERHEBAT.

The Aeronautic Engineering students from University Technology Tun Hussein Onn, made their regular practical training visit to APFT in October this year, as part of their engineering course. Our instructors spent time giving them introductory practical lessons on aircraft and aircraft engines. They got to see the maintenance of a ‘live’ aircraft, and the other activities in the hangar.

Operational Quality & Safety Assessment Audit by CAEOn 6th and 7th of December 2011, CAE’s Global QA/CI Manager (Training Services), Mr Stephen Seddon conducted a 2 day assessment audit on APFT Kota Bharu. Mr Stephen Seddon is the Manager responsible in maintaining QA/CI program for CAE’s network of ‘CAE Global Academy’ which offers training for the issuance of CPL, ATPL and MPL.

The purpose of the audit is to assess APFT’s operation and establish a baseline for APFT future cooperation with CAE.

The audit involved interviews with the head of departments followed with a tour of the training facility, equipment and support services.

Captain David Hodge from Cathay Pacific Airline, visited APFT recently and made a presentation to APFT’s cadets and APFT alumni members on the subject of how to secure employment as a pilot with the airline, and what can be expected at a pilot interview. He also touched on the issue of lifestyle as a pilot. APFT is proud to be considered by this prestigious airline as one of its sources for pilot recruitment.

2011 Graduation Ceremony At Hotel Renaissance Kota BharuThe year 2011 saw the largest number of cadets graduating from APFT. It has been a challenging year for us as we strived to overcome all the elements that affect the flight training. With all the solutions in place we managed to have a record number of 234 students graduating. The number included “abridged” students or students who joined from other flight schools that have ceased to operate. APFT helped them to complete the course and obtain their license.

This graduation ceremony also saw a batch of Ground Handlers getting their certificates. The Ground Handling course is a new course under APFT Maintenance Training Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of APFT Bhd. The course will be continued following the National Occupational Skills Standards (NOSS) which was built up by Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran in collaboration with APFT.

The graduation ceremony was held at the Renaissance Hotel, attended by family and friends of the cadets as well as invited guests. The Deputy Minister of Finance Datuk Dr. Awang Adek attended the function and the Director of Flight Operations DCA Malaysia

Dato’ Yahaya Bin Abdul Rahman, graciously presented the scrolls to the graduates. Some of the graduates were not able to attend the graduation as they have started working in airlines, locally and overseas. Our efforts at arranging for placements for our cadets saw not only recruitment by MAS, AirAsia and Firefly but also by Indonesian airlines.

Motivational Talks

Captain Eme Arizal Mahidin from AirAsia X shared his experience with the cadets on the subject of multicrew concept at AirAsia X. Captain Eme gave tips to cadets on how to handle challenges facing pilots who fly long hours, irregular hours, and being away from families for a long time.

The Captain touched on the subject of career development opportunities, as well as the demands of pilots and how to prepare for interviews with Airline Companies.

Captain Dawek and Encik Arif Faruk of APFT chose to speak on the subject of “Discipline”.

To be a successful pilot , the cadets must acquire decipline. The success of a flight depends on the pilot who must at all time follow the Standard Operating

Airline Flying and Multicrew Concept

What it takes to be a Successful Pilot

Cadets had the opportunity to interact with Captain Eme to ask questions and clear some issues, myths, and help them become more aware of their career pathways and expectations.

Procedures (SOP) of the airline company he works with. He must be able to make the right call at the right time and right place. This requires decipline. Even more important the pilot must be able to work as a team, have good crew resource management knowledge and

skills, especially during long flights, in emergency situations such as during stormy weather, engine failure or system failure. The pilot must also be smartly dressed at all times as it gives the passengers confidence and a sense of security.

The Flying Club KBFC launched recreational activities, for tourists who chose Kelantan as their destination. For a mere RM80, a guest can fly and have a panaromic view of the coastal town of Bachok, the mountain of Gunong Stong, in Dabong and even an aerial view of Kota Bharu town. This is in collaboration with the Tourism Malaysia Kelantan and supported by APFT, providing Light Planes and pilots. KBFC organises the activities in conjunction with the “Tahun Melawat Kelantan 2012” whereby the Tourism Ministry targets 6 million tourist to visit Kelantan this year.

Case Study: P28 Vertical Fin Damage in FlightInquiry: on 7th October 2011

This report is to highlight the importance of the role of Safety Pilots as well as the need to conform to the Standard Operating Procedures and seriously follow instructors’ briefs on safety aspects. Deviating from them can be disastrous.

Investigation showed that the Pilot in Command and the Safety Pilot were instructed to proceed to Uban training Area and standby for “VOR y” approach runway 10. After carrying out the basic IF maneuver, the cadets decided to carry out ‘practical’ forced landing. Upon initiating to go around at 500 feet they reported that they encountered a gust that made them lose height. In

the confusion the safety pilot took over control and reported that he saw a cable ahead and attempted to fly below it. In

their climb up the accident occurred and caused damage to the plane as can be seen in the picture.

It was 100 years ago when the first aircraft landed in Malaya in 1911 at the racecourse in Jalan Ampang Kuala Lumpur. To celebrate the 100 years, the Department of Civil Aviation along with the industry’s finest organized MALAYSIA AIR FESTIVAL 2011.

The event was held from the 26th to 27th of November 2011 but the official launch by the Honorable Prime Minister of Malaysia was on the 17th of October 2011. The event featured Static Shows, Aviation Talks, Simulator competitions, Joyrides, Aircraft demonstrations, Aviation-related activities and Aerobatics Shows.

The 100 Years of Aviation Pictorial Journey brought in by the New Straits Times Press archives centre brings back the memories not just of the growth of the Aviation Industry, but of the journey of the economic growth of Malaysia.

Celebrating 100 Years of Aviation in Malaysia

In 1963 Federation of Malaysia was formed and MAL was renamed Malaysian Airways Limited. In 1972 Malaysian Airways became MAS (Malaysian Airlines System). The economic boom of 1980-90 spur growths in the Malaysian aviation industry and MAS was flying to 47 destinations around the world. For the last 100 years the growth and development of the aviation industry in Malaysia was mostly about the growth of the National carrier MAS. The industry grew rapidly due to expansion of destination worldwide, constructions and managements of airports and

aerodromes, manufacturing, repairs, and maintenance engineering services, as well as human resource areas.

In 1991 the Malaysian DCA became the government regulatory body.
