Enhancements in Release 7.0.2

This section describes enhancements added to Release 7.0.2. See Avid Media Composer and Film Composer WhatÕs New for Release 7.0 for details on new features for Release 7.0.

Title Tool support for 16x9 mode

For more information on HDTV and the 16 x 9 option, see the Avid Media Composer UserÕs Guide or the Avid Film Composer UserÕs Guide.

The Title Tool now supports the 16 x 9 aspect ratio for display of NTSC and PAL footage. The 16 x 9 option allows you to display the full aspect ratio of wide-screen video, often used for ofßine editing of video transferred from the high-deÞnition television format.

When you select the 16 x 9 option in the Composer settings, the Title Tool increases its maximum horizontal size, and saved titles appear correctly in the Source and Record monitors set to 16 x 9.

n Because the 16 x 9 aspect ratio extends the horizontal dimensions of the foot-age, when you Þrst open the Title Tool in 16 x 9 mode you must use the Video Pan tool (with the hand icon) to pan back and forth to view footage on the sides. Click the Maximize button in the upper-right corner of the Title Tool window to automatically resize the tool to Þt the monitor.

Field-based Effects Editing

For more information on intraframe editing, see the Avid Media Com-poser and Film Composer Effects Guide .

You now have greater control over each Þeld of an effect while in Effect Mode. You can now view all Þelds of video effects and add key-frames to individual Þelds. You can also expand the Effect Preview monitorÕs position bar to better view and manipulate multiple key-frames. Field-based effects editing is especially useful during intraframe editing.

Page 7: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 7

Single-Field Step

When you enter Effect mode, the timecode display in the upper-right corner of the Effect Preview monitor displays an additional Ò.1Ó or Ò.2Ó to indicate which Þeld you are viewing and manipulating when work-ing with two-Þeld media such as AVR 70 or AVR 75. You can use the Step Forward or Step Back keys to step through the Þelds. Keyframes are attached to Þelds and will interpolate between them.

Effect Preview Monitor Scale Bar

The Effect Preview monitor in Effect mode now contains a pop-up scale bar for expanding or contracting your view of the position bar containing the effect keyframes.

To scale the Effect Preview monitorÕs position bar:

1. Click and hold on the small box located on the left side of the posi-tion bar. A scale bar pops up.

2. Continue to hold down the mouse button and drag to the left or right to expand or contract the position bar.

Improved Import Settings Controls

The import setting ÒImport sequential ÞlesÓ has been renamed to ÒAutodetect sequential ÞlesÓ which is now set by default. With this option set, when a Þle selected for import is part of a sequence of Þles, the entire sequence of Þles is automatically imported. If the option is not set, only the selected Þle is imported.

Graphics Import Enhancements

The previous import options in the Import Settings dialog box called ÒForce to Fit ScreenÓ and ÒMaintain Aspect RatioÓ have been replaced by the following three options:

Part 0130-01390-01 Rev. A Enhancements in Release 7.0.2

Page 8: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

8 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

¥ Aspect Ratio, Pixel Aspect: Use CCIR, non-square creates a full-screen image from the import, scaling the graphic if necessary.

For example, any graphic created using a 3:4 aspect ratio, includ-ing one with square pixel dimensions of 640x480 or one with non-square pixel dimensions of 720x486, will be imported as a full-screen image. Larger or smaller images, such as a 320x240 image, are also scaled to Þt the screen.

¥ Aspect Ratio, Pixel Aspect: Maintain, square maintains the aspect ratio of the graphic as well as its relative size on screen. If the graphic has dimensions smaller than full-screen, or does not have a 3:4 aspect ratio, empty regions of the screen are Þlled with alpha channel for keying over a background.

For example, a square graphic with square pixel dimensions of 320x320 will be imported as a square that occupies roughly a quar-ter of the screen, centered.

¥ Aspect Ratio, Pixel Aspect: Maintain & Resize, square scales the imported graphic to Þll the frame, while maintaining the visual square pixel aspect ratio of the graphic (in other words, without distorting the visual dimensions of the graphic).

For example, a graphic with the 3:4 aspect ratio of the screen, regardless of its size, will be scaled to full screen. A square shaped graphic, however, will be scaled until the vertical dimension reaches full height of the screen, while the remaining areas on the left and right of the horizontal dimension are Þlled with black.

Import of small, square pixel graphics has also been improved. In 7.0.1, when importing a small square pixel graphic the black border areas would not be keyed out, so the underlying video would not show through the key. Now, when you import a graphic with alpha that has black borders due to importing a small square pixel image, the border regions are automatically created as alpha channel.

Enhancements to the Fast-Save Option for Titles

You can now load and edit Fast-saved titles into a sequence. These titles will play as black in the source monitor, and be labelled as Òmedia ofßineÓ (if you step into one, it will result in a ÒMedia OfßineÓ slide).

c Be sure to recreate media for all Òfast-saveÓ titles before exporting the sequence using OMF, or before creating any EDLs from the sequence. In addition, avoid putting unrendered rolling or crawling titles into compositions.

In addition, the Bin menu now contains the command ÒSelect Unren-dered Titles.Ó Choose this command to highlight each unrendered title in the bin.

When you render the selected titles, The label in the bin changes from Ò(unrendered): Title Type: User TitleÓ to ÒTitle Type: User's TitleÓ where Title Type is either Title, Crawling Title, or Rolling Title.

In addition, the command Recreate Title Media in the Clip menu is now active when there are selected bin entries. It will choose only the unrendered titles out of all the bin entries that are selected and regen-erate them using the current compression setting in the Compression tool. After the title media is recreated, the system deletes the unren-dered versions of the titles from the bin.

Title Tool Enhancement for Typing Crawling Title Text

A new menu command, Make Crawl in the Object menu, improves the workßow for creating crawling titles in the Title Tool by allowing you to create and edit the text on a single page before converting it to a long crawling title in the lower-third region of the screen that extends beyond the Title Tool window.

Page 10: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

10 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

To use the Make Crawl feature in the Title Tool:

1. Click the Crawl [C] button.

2. Select the Text tool.

3. Click in the Title window and start typing text for the crawling title.

The text wraps around each time you reach the right margin of the current page of the title.

4. After you've Þnished entering text and making corrections, choose Make Crawl from the Object menu.

The text is converted to a single line of text, extending to the right, and the text object is repositioned one pixel above the safe title area on the screen.

Enhancement to Restoring Media with the Avid/Mezzo Archiver Software

You can now restore media Þles from tape using the Avid/Mezzo Archiver software while the Avid Media Composer or Film Composer software is running Ñ that is, without having to close and then restart the application during a restore.

Previously when you used the Avid/Mezzo Archiver to restore media Þles from tape, if the Media Composer or Film Composer application was running it would attempt to read each of the temporary Þles cre-ated by the Avid/Mezzo Archiver software during the process and would display an error message repeatedly. You no longer need to close the application to avoid this condition.

Enhancements to System Utilities

New versions of the Avid System Test and Avid System Utility appli-cations are automatically installed in the Utilities folder with the Easy Install option. These utilities allow you to view a proÞle of the Avid system conÞguration and run various system-level tests. Enhance-ments with Release 7.0.2 include:

¥ Avid System Test version 1.3 adds support for testing Revision A of the Mandrill 2D Effects Board, and includes improvements to the ÒPlayback Alladin PIPÓ test.

c The ÒPlayback Alladin PIPÓ test does not work correctly when working in PAL mode, and must be turned off before testing a PAL system. For information on turning the ÒPlayback Alladin PIPÓ test off in the Avid System Test utility, see the Avid System Test Setup and UserÕs Guide.

¥ Avid System Utility version 3.3.3 allows you to view alphanumer-ical rather than a hexidecimal representation of the board revi-sions for the Advanced JPEG Board (Janus), 3D Effects interface (Boa/Python), the 2D Effects Board (Mandrill). You can also view HUB revision for the Video Base Board (Targa 2000), the Serial Digital card (D1 daughter card), and the Advanced JPEG interface (Avid gasket).

For information on using these utilities, see the Avid System Test Setup and UserÕs Guide.

a. You can launch Media Composer or Film Composer with less than 80 MB of RAM, but system performance may be compromised. The minimum required RAM for optimal operation is 80 MB.

b. Your system comes with DAE installed. You need 20 MB of mem-ory to accommodate DAE when you launch Media Composer or Film Composer. If you do not plan to use AudioSuite Plug-Ins, you can disable DAE and use its memory allotment for another application. See ÒDigidesign AudioSuite Plug-InsÓ in the Avid Media Composer and Film Composer WhatÕs New for Release 7.0 for more information about DAE.

New memory kits are available from Avid for updating your existing RAM conÞgurations. See your Avid sales representative for details.

Changing the Memory Allocated to the Application

When you install Media Composer or Film Composer Release 7.0.2, the default memory settings for the application are 46,000 KB (46 MB) for ÒMinimumÓ and 80,000 KB (80 MB) for ÒPreferred.Ó You might need to increase the Preferred size if you are working on large projects with Media Composer or Film Composer.

If you increase the amount of memory allocated to the application, make sure to leave enough memory to run the Macintosh operating system and other applications, such as EDL Manager, AvidNet, and online help. The operating systemÕs need for memory is dynamic; therefore, the operating system might require more memory when running certain processes.

Requirements for Using AVRs

Avid MediaShare F/C provides a shared storage environment for up to three Avid systems. MediaShare F/C users can simultaneously play the same shared media Þles and audio Þles. Users can also work in a nonshared single-user environment. See the AVIDdrive Utility 2 UserÕs Guide for the drive striping requirements to use for different AVRs.

To minimize the possibility of problems when you work with AVR 75 or AVR 77, observe the following precautions:

¥ Use only striped MediaShare F/C drives.

¥ Render all real-time effects.

¥ Render all real-time audio EQ effects.

Requirement for Using Editcam Media with Release 7.0.2

If you upgrade to Release 7.0.2 and need to acquire Editcam media with the Desktop FieldPak Adapter for editing in Media Composer or Film Composer, you must re-install the Control Panel named Mac-PC Manager that allows compatibility between the Desktop FieldPak Adapter and your Avid Media Composer or Film Composer system.

The Mac-PC Manager Control Panel is available on the installer disk that came with the Desktop FieldPak Adapter.

Compatibility

This section outlines compatibility issues with prior releases, Avid Xpressª, and Broadcast products.

Compatibility with Prior Releases

Compatibility issues with prior releases of the Avid Composer system consist of the following:

¥ Projects and bins created with Releases 5.01 and later can be used with Release 7.0.2. However, projects and bins created in Release 4.5 or earlier cannot be used with this release.

c Release 5.x user folders are compatible with Release 7.0.2 and can be brought forward. However, once you open a user setting in Release 7.0.2, you cannot return those elements to a version earlier than 7.0.2.

¥ Media digitized in releases earlier than Release 7.0 cannot be used with Release 7.0 without Þrst converting it. Earlier releases use Media File Manager (MFM), and releases starting with 7.0 use Media Stream Manager (MSM).

See ÒRedigitizing Your MaterialÓ in Chapter 7 of the Avid Media Composer UserÕs Guide or Avid Film Composer UserÕs Guide for digi-tizing instructions.

You can bring bins forward from Releases 6.5 and 5.5 to Release 7.0.2; media must be converted by using the Conversion Tool in the Utilities folder. This utility works on a per-folder basis for bringing 6.X MediaFiles media into OMFI MediaFiles media.

The Conversion Tool does not enable 7.0.2 bins and media to be brought backward to Release 6.5.3. Backward compatibility is available by doing an OMFI export out of Media Composer or Film Composer Release 7.0.2, and importing these Þles back into Release 6.5.3. OMF Þle transfer is supported only if both the send-ing and the receiving systems are running OMF version 2.0.

Part 0130-01390-01 Rev. A Compatibility

Page 22: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

22 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

See ÒMedia Conversion ToolÓ in the Avid Media Composer and Film Composer WhatÕs New for Release 7.0 for more information about media conversion.

n AVR 70 and AVR 75 Þles created within Media Composer or Film Composer Release 7.0.2 cannot be played on Release 6.5.3 systems. Also, OMF export of rolling and crawling titles is not supported in OMF version 2.0.

c Consider Þnishing any projects digitized on an Avid Composer sys-tem 6.5 or earlier system before upgrading to Release 7.0.2. If you upgrade now, make time to redigitize or convert all your media.

¥ Site settings from prior releases are compatible with Release 7.0.2 and can be brought forward. However, once you open a project using the site settings, you cannot return the settings to a previous version.

¥ If you are upgrading to Release 7.0.2 you may notice that some options that were listed in the Console window for prior releases are no longer displayed. This is because a number of those options now come as standard features of the system.

Compatibility with Avid Xpress

If you plan to move 3D effects between Avid Xpress and Media Com-poser systems, use the Xpress 3D Effect category on the Avid Com-poser system. This is a special category of 3D effects that are completely compatible with Avid Xpress.

If you use the 3D Warp effect from the Blend category, you must ren-der the effects in Media Composer before you bring them into Avid Xpress. You cannot further manipulate those effects in Avid Xpress.

Compatibility Part 0130-01390-01 Rev. A

Page 23: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 23

Broadcast Product Compatibility

Media Composer 7.0.2 bins and media are not compatible with Avid broadcast products. Additionally, Avid broadcast bins and media are not supported with Media Composer 7.0.2.

If you require bin and media compatibility with Avid broadcast prod-ucts, you should continue to use Media Composer 6.5.3. Bin and media compatibility exists between Media Composer 6.5.3 and broadcast products as shown in the table below.

If you purchased 7.0.2 and require broadcast product compatibility, contact your Avid sales representative.

Verifying the Macintosh Operating System Version

To Þnd out if you have the correct version of the Macintosh operating system (OS), go to the Finder and choose About This Computer from the Apple menu. The operating system shown in the illustration is Macintosh OS 8.0.

If you do not have the correct version of the Macintosh OS, obtain and load the OS as described in the following section.

Obtaining the Macintosh Operating System

The Avid Media Composer products Release 7.0.2 CD-ROM does not include a copy of the Macintosh OS software. Two methods are avail-able for getting a newer version of the Macintosh OS:

¥ Install the software from the Macintosh CD-ROM. You receive this CD-ROM when you purchase a new Power Macintosh. Follow the

instructions in ÒGuidelines for Installing the Macintosh Operating SystemÓ on page 25 of these release notes.

¥ Obtain the OS from an Apple Computer dealer. Copies are avail-able on CD-ROM.

Guidelines for Installing the Macintosh Operating System

Use the following guidelines for installing a new Macintosh OS:

¥ Check the internal hard drive and repair any problems by using Apple Disk First Aidª or Norton Disk Doctorª.

c Failure to repair any problems found on the internal drive could result in a corrupt installation.

¥ Start the Macintosh from the Macintosh CD-ROM and perform a clean system software installation by following the instructions provided in the user guide supplied with the Macintosh.

¥ Make sure the Destination Disk is the internal hard drive (usually named Avid).

¥ Disable the system-wide platinum appearance. See ÒDisabling the System-Wide Platinum AppearanceÓ on page 34.

Choosing the Avid Drive and Restarting

If you changed your startup disk to install the OS, restart the Macintosh from the internal hard drive, using the following steps:

1. Choose Startup Disk from the Control Panels on the Apple menu.

2. Select the internal hard drive (usually the Avid drive).

3. Close the window and restart your Macintosh.

The system starts up from the Avid drive.

Installing the Avid Composer System Software

You can install the Media Composer or Film Composer on a new sys-tem with new hardware, or upgrade to 7.0.2 from a PCI system run-ning Release 6.1 or 6.5. See ÒMacintosh Operating SystemÓ on page 12 for a list of supported systems.

Preliminary Information

Verify that the version of the Macintosh OS is a supported version. See ÒVerifying the Macintosh Operating System VersionÓ on page 24. New systems are shipped with the current version of the Macintosh OS installed, but you should still verify it.

c This installation overwrites any previous release of the Media Composer or Film Composer software that is loaded. If you prefer, you can save the old release of the Avid Composer system software by renaming the folder on the Avid drive that contains the applica-tion. This also saves the old Attic, Settings, and SupportingFiles folders.

n If you have problems installing the software when using these instructions, try turning off any virus-checking extensions or other system-monitoring software running on your Avid system. Use the Extension Manager to turn off these applications, and then repeat the installation process.

After you complete the software installation, use the Extension Manager to turn on any virus-checking extension or other system-monitoring software that you normally run on your Avid system, and restart the system.

Reveal File allows you to select a clip in a bin and automatically open its related media Þle. Make sure AppleScript is loaded and active on the Macintosh before using the Reveal File feature.

Rerendering Effects

When you use the Media Conversion Tool to convert MFM Þles to MSM Þles, any media you created by rendering effects in MFM does not convert to MSM. You need to rerender any effects that do not con-vert into MSM. All Þles that do not get converted are logged in the Media Conversion Tool log.

Choosing a Controller in the Serial Ports Tool

The Serial Ports Tool has changed for Release 7.0.2. You need to specify a controller type and its serial port if you are going to use a controller. You can specify the AvidDroid controller, the Steenbeck, or the manual user interface (MUI). You no longer choose a controller from the Deck Settings dialog box.

Make sure only one DigiSystem INIT is present in the extensions folder. If a difference in the Þle name exists, such as the presence or absence of an underscore (_), between the words ÒDigiSystemÓ and ÒINIT,Ó the Digidesign installer will not overwrite AvidÕs installer, and both will remain in the extensions folder. You should remove or dis-able the older version by using the Extensions Manager control panel.

VTR Emulation Cable

VTR emulation permits you to use the Avid Composer system as a source for a linear edit controller. It makes the Avid system look like a videotape deck to the edit controller. This feature requires a special cable, much like the existing deck control cables. For more informa-tion, contact your Avid sales representative.

Refer to Chapter 19 in the Avid Media Composer UserÕs Guide or Chapter 20 in the Avid Film Composer UserÕs Guide for more information on VTR emulation.

Transfer Tool and TCP/IP Settings

If you use the Transfer Tool or MediaShare F/C, with or without AvidNet, make sure TCP/IP starts before you start the Avid Composer system. This action prevents TCP/IP from reducing the amount of contiguous free memory.

To set the loading option for TCP/IP:

1. Choose Control Panels from the Apple menu.

2. Choose TCP/IP from the Control Panels list.

The TCP/IP window opens.

Documentation Changes

This section describes errors and additions to the Release 7.0.2 documentation.

Deleting Slates, Takes, and Script Marks

Chapter 11 of the Avid Media Composer UserÕs Guide and the Avid Film Composer UserÕs Guide describes the deletion of slates, takes, and script marks from the script window using script integration.

You cannot undo deletion of slates, takes, and script marks.

To restore one of these elements after deletion, follow the instructions in Chapter 11 for adding slates to the script window, adding takes to slates, or applying script marks to takes.

Interpolating Position for Script Integration

There is a new option in the Script menu and in Script Settings, Interpolate Position. This option allows you to match a clip to a take, and to see where a particular line in the script would appear in the clip footage.

When you turn on Interpolate Position, the length of the take in the script is matched to the length of the clip in the Source monitor. The position indicator in the Source monitor corresponds to wherever you click in the take.

If you set a script mark in the take, the portions of the take on either side of the script mark are matched to the portions of the clip on either side of the IN mark in the Source monitor. See Chapter 11 of the Avid Media Composer UserÕs Guide and the Avid Film Composer UserÕs Guide for more information about scripts and script marks.

Using the Media Conversion Tool

This section describes the proper use of the Media Conversion Tool, and includes a list of restrictions and special considerations.

To convert media:

1. Double-click the Conversion Tool application icon located in the Conversion folder of the Utilities folder on the Avid drive (the sys-temÕs internal drive).

2. Click the Source Folder Find button to navigate to the folder of Þles you want to convert.

3. Locate the 6.x MediaFiles folder or the OMFI MediaFiles folder you want to convert on your media drive.

4. Click the Destination Folder Find button to navigate to the media drive where you want the converted Þles to go.

Documentation Changes Part 0130-01390-01 Rev. A

Page 49: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 49

n If you select just the media drive (without selecting a folder), an OMFI MediaFiles folder will be created for you.

5. Select a Source Format and a Destination Format.

n If you select MFM Media as your source format, MSM Media becomes your default Destination Format.

6. Choose the Audio and Video format. When the Destination For-mat is MSM Media, the defaults are already selected.

7. Click Convert to convert the media Þles.

A progress bar appears.

8. When the conversion is completed, select another folder to convert or click Quit to exit the tool.

The Media Conversion tool creates a log Þle in a folder labelled Logs inside the Conversion folder in the Utilities folder. This log of the converted Þles can be read using any word processing or text editing software package such as SimpleText.

Tips and Guidelines For Media File Conversion

The following are some tips and restrictions to keep in mind:

¥ All the Þles must be in either MSM or MFM format. Do not mix Þles of different types in the Source Folder for conversion.

¥ The media drive where you create the Destination Folder for the converted Þles must have at least as much available storage space as the size of your Source Folder containing the original Þles.

¥ Consider using a media drive for the Destination Folder for the converted Þles that does not already have an OMFI MediaFiles folder in order to allow the system to automatically create an OMFI MediaFiles folder for the newly converted Þles.

¥ If a number of errors occur in the conversion process for no appar-ent reason, consider splitting the source Þles up into smaller groups in separate folders, and convert the folders one at a time.

Part 0130-01390-01 Rev. A Documentation Changes

Page 50: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

50 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

¥ Most precompute media Þles for effects wonÕt convert.

¥ If an audio Þle in the AIFF format does not convert properly, con-sider reimporting the audio Þle in the SD II format, and re-editing the Þle into your sequence.

¥ After converting, relink all the master clips Þrst, before relinking sequences.

¥ Occasionally clips edited into a sequence from other projects or clips that have had their tape names modiÞed will not convert properly.

AudioSuite Plug-Ins and Time Compression/Expansion

Appendix A of the Avid Media Composer User Guide states that you should not use any Digidesign AudioSuite Plug-ins that use time com-pression because the output would have a different sample duration than the original Þle. You can use the time compression/expansion plug-ins as long as you perform an audio mixdown on the results. The reasons for this are described below.

The problem stems from the fact that the length of the audio segment does not change. SpeciÞcally, when performing time expansion, the audio portion that is expanded past the length of the audio segment is truncated. Time compression on the other hand, pads out the remain-ing length of the Þle with silence.

If you use time compression (i.e., to speed up the audio) then you usu-ally want to trim out the silence. However, if the time compression AudioSuite effect should ever become unrendered, rerendering the effect reintroduces the silence. This means that you would have to rec-reate the effect from scratch. Therefore, we recommmend performing an audio mixdown of the time compression effect before continuing editing.

Importing Audio Files to Pro Tools or AudioVision

This section describes how to import audio Þles to Pro Tools and AudioVision.

Media Composer products and Avid Xpress support both AIFF and Sound Designer II (SD2) audio Þle formats. If you know that you will be exporting audio Þles to Pro Tools or AudioVision, make sure you use SD2 format.

Exporting SD2 Audio Files to AudioVision

If all of your audio Þles are in SD2 format, use the following proce-dure:

1. Choose Export from the File menu.

2. Choose OMFI Composition.

3. Change the top pulldown menu on the Export dialog box to AudioVision.

The system displays the default settings.

With Media Check Box

When you choose SD2 or AudioVision from the pulldown menu, the With Media check box is selected and inactive. This means that the OMF composition contains links to the media Þles created by Media Composer or Avid Xpress. You will need to bring the drives to the AudioVision system. Either rename the OMF MediaFiles folder to MediaFiles or place the OMF MediaFiles folder inside the MediaFiles folder on the AudioVision system.

If you plan to use the video on the AudioVision system, you will need to convert the video using the Media Conversion Tool. In the Media Conversion Tool, perform an MSM to MFM conversion and select the Video format only. See the Media Composer and Film Composer WhatÕs New for Release 7.0 for a description of the Media Conversion Tool.

Exporting SD2 Audio Files to Pro Tools

If all of your media Þles are in SD2 format, use the following proce-dure:

1. Choose Export from the File menu.

2. Choose OMFI Composition.

3. Choose SD2 from the top pulldown menu.

4. Choose Version OMFI 2.0

When you choose SD2 or AudioVision from the pulldown menu, it means that the OMF composition contains links to the media on the drives. Bring the drives to your Pro Tools system. Do not change the names of any folders or directories that contain the media Þles.

Before you use the Þles in Pro Tools, you need to process them with OMF Tools 2.0.4. For information on this product, see the Digidesign web page at http://www.digidesign.com.

Exporting AIFF Audio Files to AudioVision

If your media Þles are AIFF or a mixture of SD2 and AIFF, use the fol-lowing procedure:

1. Choose Export from the File menu.

2. Choose OMFI Composition.

3. Change the top pulldown menu to Standard-AIFC.

4. Choose Audio Only from the second pulldown menu.

5. Choose Version OMFI 1.0

6. Make sure that With Media is checked.

When you choose Standard-AIFC from the pulldown menu, With Media means that the OMFI Þle that gets created will have both the SD2 and AIFF audio media embedded in it.

Documentation Changes Part 0130-01390-01 Rev. A

Page 53: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 53

If you plan to use the video on the AudioVision system, you will need to convert the video using the Media Conversion Tool. In the Media Conversion tool, perform an MSM to MFM conversion and select the Video format only. See the Media Composer and Film Composer WhatÕs New for Release 7.0 for a description of the Media Conversion Tool.

Exporting AIFF Audio to Pro Tools

If you have AIFF audio or a mixture of AIFF and SD2 audio, use the following procedure:

1. Choose Export from the File menu.

2. Choose OMFI Composition.

3. Change the top pulldown menu to Standard-AIFC.

4. Choose Audio Only from the second pulldown.

5. Choose Version OMFI 2.0.

6. Make sure the With Media box is checked.

When you choose Standard-AIFC from the pulldown menu, With Media means that the OMF Þle that gets created will have both the SD2 and AIFF audio media embedded in it.

Before you use the Þles in Pro Tools, you need to process them with OMF Tools 2.0.4. For information on this product, see the Digidesign web page at http://www.digidesign.com.

Importing Photoshop Files with Transparency

Releases 3.0 and greater of Adobe Photoshop allow you to create a transparent background for an image by turning off the background layer before saving in the Photoshop Þle format (.ps). However, the transparency in such images does not import correctly into Media Composer products.

Part 0130-01390-01 Rev. A Documentation Changes

Page 54: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

54 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

To import graphic images that include regions of transparency from Photoshop into Media Composer products, create a fourth alpha chan-nel before saving the Þle. For more information on creating alpha channels, see the Photoshop documentation.

Reimporting an OMF Composition with Media

If you want to reimport an OMF composition with media at a new AVR, you must Þrst delete all the media created when you imported the composition the Þrst time.

To reimport an OMF Þle with a new AVR:

1. Open the bin containing the previously imported sequence.

2. Choose Set Bin Display from the Bin menu and select the Show Reference Clips option.

3. Select the sequence and all master clips associated with the sequence.

4. Press the Delete key.

5. In the Delete dialog box, make sure all the clips and media Þles for the sequence are selected, then click OK to delete them.

6. Import the OMF Þle again using procedures described in the Avid Media Composer UserÕs Guide or the Avid Film Composer UserÕs Guide.

Fixed Bugs

Bugs Fixed in Release 7.0.2

✔ Previously, on occasion when playing a long sequence the video might get out of synchronization with the audio. It would be repeatable, but then get back in synch if you re-booted the Macintosh. We found and Þxed a problem in the timing routines that keep the video in synch.

✔ 5037Previously, if you used the Fast Save feature with a crawling or rolling title and then used Recreate Title Media to render the title, the title might not roll or crawl correctly. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 5889Previously, you might experience problems trying to open a bin from Release 6.5.1 in Releases 7.0 and later. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 5889In Release 7.0.1 there was a problem using negative Position num-bers in a Blowup effect. Negative numbers would slip by 1 when tog-gling back to Source/Record mode. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 5889Previously, changing the leading on a rolling title caused some text to get cut off. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 5565Previously, kerning was not displayed in the second page of a title scroll. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ You can now backup the original clip as well as the media Þle when using the Avid/Mezzo Archiver software.

✔ Previously, Automation Gain would not work if the bottom track was monitored and not highlighted. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 5465Previously, YUV Chroma Key and Luma Key effects would not display if they were placed above an unrendered motion effect that has a real-time effect placed on it. This problem has been Þxed.

Page 58: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

58 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

✔ Previously, the Consolidate command generated a fatal assertion error message on a master clip that had an audio effect, such as EQ, applied to it. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ The Media Composer or Film Composer application now displays a message to notify the user when updating the MSM databases.

✔ Previously, the option ÒAutodetect Sequential FilesÓ in the Import Set-tings dialog box caused the Single Frame Import setting ÒFormat: Media FileÓ to be ignored when chosen. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ Previously, OMF exports of retimes and varispeeds got the correct speed but did not receive the direction. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ Previously, the last frame of a digital cut contained the Þrst Þeld twice on the tape. This has been Þxed. The last frame of a digital cut now consists of the two correct Þelds of the frame.

✔ In 7.0.1, importing a shot log that contained Ink Numbers might create master clips that would not batch digitize. This problem is Þxed.

✔ Previously, importing a shot log using either of the two merge options (Merge with known sources and automatically create subclips or Merge with known master clips) might cause the message ÒNot enough adjacent material to create the transitionÓ to appear errone-ously during the import. In some cases, one or more of the master clips that were selected before the import might become corrupted by the operation; you might notice error messages when you tried to open, display or save the bin. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ Previously, importing a shot log that contains a syntax error might cause the import routine to get stuck displaying the same error mes-sage repeatedly and not progress through the input Þle. An example of such a syntax error is the use of spaces instead of a tab to separate col-umns in an ALE Þle. In this case, an error message will come up indi-cating that there was a problem reading the data from that line in the Þle. Choosing OK will cause the same error message to be displayed again (although it will incorrectly indicate that it is now reading the

Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 59

next line in the Þle). Choosing Abort will stop the import, but choosing Quit will hang the system. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ Previously, in Þlm projects, splicing certain clips from the source mon-itor to the record monitor may yield a CM_OFFSET_OUT_OF_RANGE error. This bug occurred when work-ing in 35mm Þlm projects (4-perf or 3-perf). If an audio-only clip that contained locators was loaded into the source monitor and edited into the record monitor, the error CM_OFFSET_OUT_OF_RANGE might appear and the edit operation would not be performed. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ Previously, the AutoSequence operation did not properly handle AutoSynced subclips. Using AutoSequence on subclips that were cre-ated by AutoSync would either fail to generate a sequence at all, or the sequence that is generated would contain timecodes that were derived from the audio timecodes on the subclips rather than the video time-codes. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ Previously, when selecting tapes in the digitize tool or batch digitize, if there was no Video Input tool setting with the same name as the tape, or one labeled ÒDefaultÓ or ÒUntitledÓ, the input values were all set to the default values, including the input channel, which was set to ÒCompositeÓ. The work-around for this problem was to save a setting named ÒDefaultÓ, which speciÞed the preferred input mode, as well as any custom parameter values.

Now, as before, the system will Þrst look for a setting with the same name as the tape, then for a setting named ÒDefaultÓ. If neither of these exist, the system creates an ÒUntitledÓ setting which speciÞes the default input parameters, but leaves the input channel set the way it was.

n A side effect of this change is that it is no longer valid to save a setting named ÒUntitledÓ. You may still use a setting named ÒDefaultÓ to customize input parameters, if, for example, you have a series of tapes that require a similar adjustment.

60 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

✔ Previously, changing audio output via AvidDroid garbled dB display in the audio output window. If you attempted to change the audio out-put of a sequence via the AvidDroid's audio output dial, the dB dis-play would become garbled. This would only occur while the sequence was being played. This problem is Þxed.

✔ In 7.0.1, you could not map menu functions to the AvidDroid buttons, as you can on the other controllers. This has been Þxed.

✔ In 7.0.1, you could only ÒOKÓ or ÒCancelÓ any of the deck conÞgura-tion dialogs by using the mouse. Now you can use the Return or Enter key to ÒOKÓ the dialogs, or the Escape key to ÒCancelÓ them. Now you can close deck conÞguration dialogs using the Return or Enter key.

✔ Previously, the drop/non-drop option was being presented to users as a deck setting in PAL projects, even though these options are irrele-vant. Now, if you are using a PAL project, the popup menu is disabled.

✔ Previously, long audio-only sequences would sometimes drift using VLAN. If you did not have a reference going into the VLAN, the audio might drift on long digitized clips. We now test to see if the VLAN or direct-connect deck has reference before we digitize.

✔ Previously, MUI speed settings were not persistent after quitting and re-launching the application. This has now been Þxed.

✔ Previously, the deck RECORD light would illuminate when digitizing from a deck using VLAN. In order to attain frame accuracy when digi-tizing with VLAN, we were simulating an edit (to get proper coinci-dence), with all tracks explicitly disabled. However, some decks would still illuminate their RECORD light even if all tracks are dis-abled. This has been Þxed by using the VLAN Rehearse command, which simulates an edit and does not illuminate the RECORD button.

✔ Previously, if you armed a higher-numbered video track for a sequence in the Digital Cut tool, and then changed to a sequence with fewer video tracks, none of the visible video tracks would be armed (e.g., arm V3 on a sequence; change to a sequence with 1 video track;

Fixed Bugs Part 0130-01390-01 Rev. A

Page 61: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 61

V1 is not armed). This has been Þxed so that switching to a sequence with fewer video tracks will cause the Þrst video track to be armed.

✔ Previously, digitizing with Fostex D-20B, Sony BVU or BVH decks would generate ÒSBV_Unknown_CommandÓ exceptions when digi-tizing. These decks were not on the deck supported list for Media Composer 7.0 or earlier, but some customers were able to use them with Media Composer 6.5. However, when digitizing with 7.0.1 and one of these decks, SBV_Unknown_Command exceptions occur. It turns out that these decks do not recognize the Preroll Sense command in the Sony SBV protocol. This was Þxed through a software change and new machine templates.

✔ Previously, controlling a Tascam DA-60 MK II would generate com-munications faults. This deck was not on the deck supported list for Media Composer 7.0 or earlier, but some customers were able to use the deck with Media Composer 6.5. However, when controlling this deck with 7.0.1, occasional communications faults would occur. This deck occasionally generates a software overrun error. This has been Þxed by immediately resending any command when a software over-run error has been detected.

✔ Previously, controlling a Tascam DA-98 would generate communica-tions faults. This deck was not on the deck supported list for Media Composer 7.0 or earlier, but some customers were able to use the deck with Media Composer 6.5. However, when controlling this deck with 7.0.1, occasional communications faults would occur. This deck occa-sionally generates a checksum error. This has been Þxed by immedi-ately resending any command when a software overrun error has been detected.

✔ Previously, track arming on Sony D2 (DVR-18, DVR-20, DVR-28) decks didnÕt work properly. This has been corrected by updating the machine templates for these decks.

✔ Previously, a sequence that began with Þller might have all of its clips play as Òwrong format.Ó If the sequence began with Þller and the ele-ments of the sequence were 2 Þeld resolutions and the compression

tool was set to a 1 Þeld resolution, then the clips in the sequence would play as wrong format. This is also true for sequences containing 1 Þeld resolutions with the compression tool set to a 2 Þeld resolution. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ ÔUndoÕ Recreate Title Media did not work in some cases. There was a problem when using the Recreate Title Media command to recreate multiple titles in a sequence. If the operation was interrupted, such as by encountering a bad title or by the user pressing Command-Period, all titles that had been successfully recreated up to that point would be undone. This has been Þxed; if the title was successfully recreated, it is left that way.

✔ Previously, when doing a software dissolve on a sequence whose media is in a single Þeld resolution, only the top half of the frame would contain the dissolve. This has been Þxed. Because this only affected single Þeld resolutions and only software dissolves, this was only seen on older model systems.

✔ Previously, exported QuickTime video levels were not using the cor-rect color range. When exporting to a QuickTime movie using a non-Avid codec, the color levels in the resulting QuickTime Þle would be in the CCIR range (16-235) rather than the full RGB range (0-255). This has been Þxed.

✔ In 7.0.1, an attempt to mute or solo a track using the green mute or solo buttons from the Automation Gain Record Tool would sometimes just ßash yellow (solo) momentarily and then immediately revert back to green (normal). This prevented the user from pre-selecting the track states before initiating an automation gain recording. This problem is Þxed.

✔ Previously, a text object containing multi-byte characters (or other non-Roman fonts) and also containing Roman characters would not kern correctly and might cause Media Composer to crash. This prob-lem is Þxed.

Fixed Bugs Part 0130-01390-01 Rev. A

Page 63: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 63

✔ Previously, if your source and record monitor windows were very large (Òbig effects modeÓ), toggling the title background (the ÒVÓ but-ton) between video and solid color might cause the Title Tool to crash. This problem is Þxed.

✔ Previously, you might get an exception when saving a title, changing it and then saving it again. This problem is Þxed.

✔ Previously, saving a title with an embedded colon in the name caused an exception with the message: Unable to save title: DISK_MISSING_VREF.

This error message was caused by the colon character, which was the default directory separator, and is therefore illegal in a Þle name. The Media Composer now issues an error message indicating that an ille-gal character has appeared in the Þlename; you must not use a colon in a Þlename.

✔ Previously, regenerating titles in the timeline added the regenerated titles to the source monitor. This might cause the clips already loaded in the source monitor to be ßushed out, which was inconvenient. This problem is Þxed; regenerated clips are no longer inserted into the source monitor implicitly. If you want the regenerated title in the source monitor, you should double click on the newly created title in the bin.

✔ Previously, if your Import options were set such that alpha is ignored on import, the Title Tool would fail during regenerate because it didnÕt override that setting and, instead, attempted to save and then import the title without alpha. This problem is Þxed by having the Media Composer ignore the default options setting when regenerating titles.

✔ Previously, switching to 16x9 when the Title Tool is open might cause a crash. This problem is Þxed.

✔ With tool tips turned on (the default), a little yellow popup label appears when the mouse hesitates over a control. For certain Title Tool

controls (the Þll, shadow and border color tools), the tool tips were not being displayed. This problem is Þxed.

✔ There was a bug which caused the system to crash when you attempted to render audio dissolves with SDII media. The problem was in very low-level code which manages memory, and is now Þxed.

✔ There was a bug with video mixdown that included a uniform source, such as Þller (black) or a single graphic image imported such as a slide. When such a source was included in the material to be mixed down, sometimes the resulting frames would all be from the uniform source. So if you mixed down a sequence that started with Þller (black), the entire mixdown would be black. This bug is Þxed.

✔ Previously, Multigroup quad playback would revert to full-screen. In some cases, quad playback of Multigroup clips reverted to full-screen playback when clips had different starting timecodes. This worked in 6.5.x releases. The problem arose when 7.0.1 tried to support multiple resolutions in Multigroup. For this CPR, multiple resolution support may not work. We are investigating if we can support multiple resolu-tions in multigroup in a future CPR.

✔ In Media Composer 7.0.1, the option for scaling titles in the Effects Editor is enabled when the downstream key (DSK) is disabled. Some models of Media Composer products did not have DSK capability, so scaling was not an option. Scaling was available, though, in similar 6.5.x models, but got lost when upgrading to 7.0.1. In the CPR, we changed the Effects Editor to restore scaling. WeÕve added a DSK checkbox: to enable scaling of titles, disable DSK in the Effects Editor window.

✔ In 7.0.1, it was very difÞcult to shuttle the deck at speeds below 1x play using the shuttle control in the digitize tool and deck controller windows. This has been Þxed.

✔ If you run the board diagnostic portion of the Avid System Test in PAL mode, an invalid failure no longer occurs if you select the Playback Genieª PIP test located under the PCI 3D Effects Board.

Bugs Fixed in Release 7.01

The following problems or limitations documented in previous release notes are corrected in Release 7.0.1. Additional bugs have also been Þxed. Unless otherwise noted, the information pertains to both the Media Composer and the Film Composer software.

✔ 23074 Previously, when you used the A and S keys or the arrow keys to ÒGo to Next EditÓ or ÒGo to Previous EditÓ in the Timeline, the posi-tion bar occasionally skipped over transitions. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 17060 Previously, single-Þeld resolution caused edge jitter on some effects. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 17616 Previously, an Òincompatible tracksÓ error appeared while you were editing VA1A2 into VA3A4 sequence. If you created a sequence by editing audio-only from a source clip that had audio tracks 3 and 4 and you didnÕt use A1 or A2, the sequence was created with audio tracks 3 and 4, but not 1 and 2. If you attempted to edit a VA1A2 clip into the sequence, you got an Òincompatible tracksÓ error. This prob-lem has been Þxed.

✔ 17731 Previously if you grouped together words, objects, or both in the Title Tool, you had to use the Ungroup command from the Object menu to ungroup them. If you ungrouped them using the Edit Undo command or kÐZ, your system would crash the next time you tried to manipulate any of those objects. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 17142 Previously, the Reverse Effect button may not have worked properly on transition effects. It now works properly.

✔ 17022 Any real-time effect added to a motion effect with strobe used to cause the motion effect to become unrendered. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 17527 The Avid calculator used to default to the video rate of the type of project you were in; thus in Film Projects, the calculator defaulted to 30 fps for NTSC or 25 fps for PAL. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 17577 For 16mm cut lists, opticals listed in the ÒFirst/Last KeyÓ col-umn of the assemble list showed 35mm durations. Other columns in the assemble list, including ÒAt this FootageÓ and ÒDurationÓ would display the opticals in correct 16mm durations. The Optical Lists themselves were correct for 16mm. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 17579 In a Matchback project, the (EC) display veriÞed the key num-bers but did not calculate duration. You had to use timecode calcula-tions or translate them by using a Þlm/timecode calculator. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 14568 Previously, the ink number format in the Þlm settings defaulted to 16mm 20 fr. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 15898 Previously, you couldnÕt get an optical block cut list from ink numbers in optical block format. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 17008 Previously, if you wanted the assemble list to reßect the ÒHan-dlesÓ cell, you had to enter the data and clear the list twice. This prob-lem has been Þxed.

✔ 17100 The Console used to report an incorrect port for deck control. Even if you had your deck connected to your printer port, the Console still assumed the deck was connected to the modem port. This prob-lem has been Þxed.

✔ 16461 An ambiguous error message used to be displayed if you attempted to launch the Avid Composer system without the required library extensions installed. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 16980 If the Media Composer failed to render an effect because it didnÕt have enough memory, you would have gotten an error mes-sage, after which, the amount of available system memory might have decreased signiÞcantly. This problem has been Þxed.

Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 67

✔ 11588 The system might have crashed to MacsBug if you tried to print from Avid Composer before you had selected a printer. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 16050 Previously, when you loaded a clip that had both audio and video and played it back at 10x speed, a DIGI_INIT_OVERRUN exception was raised once or twice a minute. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 17256 Softness might have disappeared for the Þrst frame of a vertical edge wipe with certain combinations of transition lengths and softness values. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 16931 In a PAL project, the incoming video (B-channel) showed through on the edges of some effects. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 17040 Digital ÒnoiseÓ might have appeared on the top edge of an image when you used corner pinning on images where the sides werenÕt at 90 degree angles to the top edges Ð for example, a trapezoid shape. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 16150 3D Hour Glass and Bow Tie effects had a horizontal line across the center that divided the image in two; the top half shifted to the right or left of the bottom half. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 13208 A ßash occurred while you were rotating a 3D Ball effect. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 11744 and 12170 The interpolation of frequency was jittery on waves and multiwaves. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 16271 The stamp buffer cleared one Þeld later than the foreground image. This was only visible on the client monitor where you could see two Þelds. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 16749 Softness disappeared when Borders were set to 1. When 3D was enabled, and the Border width was set to 1, the softness went away for

all effects except for Matrix Wipes, Four Corners, Horizontal Bands, and Horizontal and Vertical Blinds. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 16361 A stamp on the Þrst key frame didnÕt play back in Effect Mode. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 13712 When you faded a stamp but didnÕt clear it, the stamp popped back on after the effect had ended. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 16700 In a single-Þeld resolution sequence with 3D enabled, back-to-back color effects didnÕt play in real time. They played Þne if one effect was rendered or if 3D was disabled. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 16495 Shadows applied only to the portion of an image that was on the screen. For example, if you applied the default shadow to a Picture-In-Picture effect that had been promoted to 3D and moved the image off the screen to the left, you would have noticed that the shadow stopped before it got to the edge of the screen. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 17463 An OMF¨ 2.0 exported Þle with segment effects showed up as an effect with the name ÒFillerÓ instead of the original clip name when you reimported it into Media Composer. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 17096 If you converted a master clip from one resolution to another, the second import caused play problems. If you converted from one AVR to a different AVR, you might have gotten an error if you tried to play the master clip in the Source monitor and the sequence in the Record monitor. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 17070 If you imported a master clip and media via OMF, you couldnÕt delete them using the Media Tool. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 12508 If you exported an m resolution clip using OMF, and then imported it at a different AVR, the imported video would have had its left and right sides squeezed to the center. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 16787 Audio level changes didnÕt show up in AudioVision¨ when EQ was on the clip. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 16912 Previously, uncompressed TIFF images or those created as square pixels scaled incorrectly in OMF. If you created an OMF 1.0 Þle from an uncompressed TIFF image or one that used square pixels, and then brought the image into Avid Composer, the image got cropped and scaled incorrectly. They now scale correctly.

✔ 17114 The Media Composer codec did not always default to the correct compression setting window. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 17112 If you exported a QuickTime video and audio clip or sequence that had 24 audio tracks, the Avid Composer exported only the audio tracks, not the video track. Now the video tracks are exported as well.

✔ 17127 QuickTime export of some NuVista+¨ resolutions did not con-vert the media correctly. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 16469 Importing stereo QuickTime audio Þles added 6 dB to the signal. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 15604 QuickTime audio export ignored any volume changes on export. If you exported an audio-only sequence with gain automation to QuickTime, QuickTime audio didnÕt reßect the volume changes. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 16481 When you exported a QuickTime movie, one or two white frames might have appeared at the end of it. The number of white frames depended on the length of the exported clip. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 16709 If you imported a QuickTime movie, the last frame would not import, so the duration in Avid Composer would have been one frame less than the movie duration. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 16945 (Film projects only) The PICT import time was inaccurate. If a PICT Þle was imported in a Þlm project as a media Þle and a duration was entered, the Þnal PICT Þle in the bin might not have matched the duration entered. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 16146 If you selected a bin and opened the Digitize Tool by pressing kÐB, the bin might have repositioned itself at the base of the Digitize Tool, behind the Project window. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 15953 Depending on the print driver, attempting to print the Timeline might have caused a Macintosh error 192. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 12715 The error message MFM_CONS_UNEXPECTED_RC might have been displayed when you rendered a submaster over an area of AVR 75 or AVR 77 material with 3D effects. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ The following Variable Speed Play (VSP) problems have beencorrected:

¥ Performance might have been slow in sequences that contained complex real-time effects.

¥ 16450 When changing direction over a title, a ßash of the alpha channel might have occurred.

¥ 16479 The play indicator light might have stayed on after the sequence had Þnished playing.

¥ 16462 A 3D effect from one clip might have ßashed in another clip.

¥ 16472, 16333 In reverse VSP, the blue bar often stopped in the mid-dle of the sequence or it did not go all the way to the beginning of the sequence.12754 In addition, you could not use mouse shuttle or mouse jog, or the jog buttons, to go to the head of the sequence when you were using reverse VSP.

¥ 16507 You might have seen black ßashes when using reverse VSP.

✔ 17690 Multicamera mode did not support AVR 6m in PAL unless you were using striped drives. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 17684 The Avid Composer did not recognize precomputes correctly in multicamera mode. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 17326 If you grouped clips at AVR 75 and played them in hardware multicamera mode, you might have experienced ßashing in the client monitor when you clicked on the different quads. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 15529 Partial redigitizing of multicamera media Þles that changed the AVR of those media Þles would cause the quads to show up as gray frames. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 17101 The ÒSwitch to emptiest driveÓ digitize setting pertained only to video. If audio media Þlled a drive during digitizing, the Avid Com-poser reported an error and you had to switch drives manually. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 16916 An error might have occurred when you stopped an audio punch-in. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 16669 Full Frame in the Title Tool wouldnÕt Þt on screen (PAL only). This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 17586 The Avant Garde font didnÕt show up in the Title Tool, even when it was installed in the Fonts folder. It now shows up.

✔ 16986 On Circle Wipe effects with softness set to 20 or greater, you would have seen lines or noise around the effect. You no longer see the lines or noise.

✔ 17075 When using enhanced Chroma Key, the primary key color that you had chosen didnÕt stay enabled if you enabled a secondary color. The primary color now stays enabled when you enable a secondary color.

✔ 17160 If you used the Media Reader to create a subclip based on Sound Timecode, the bin information may have been one frame off from what you speciÞed. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 11840 The Digital Cut window may have taken a long time to open after you changed sequences or used the Digitize Tool. That no longer happens.

✔ 16821 Placement of burn-in numbers was off for burn-in on output/digital cut when you used Media Reader. This problem has been Þxed.

✔ 17051 Media conversion had a 2-GB limit. If you tried to convert more than 2 GB of media, you would have gotten the error message ÒNot enough room on destination.Ó This problem has been Þxed.

Known Bugs

This section describes known bugs listed by functional category. When a workaround exists, it appears in the paragraph directly following the bug description. The most recently found bugs appear at the begin-ning of each category.

n If you encounter a problem with your system, consult these release notes to see if a known bug or workaround associated with your problem exists before contacting Avid Customer Support.

General

✘ 22895 A bin with the size of zero K and a .write extension shows up in the project window after an error forces you to quit the Avid Composer system.

Workaround: If a bin with the .write extension appears, delete the .write bin and drag the original bin from the Attic folder.

Known Bugs Part 0130-01390-01 Rev. A

Page 73: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 73

✘ 22898 The Þrst clip of the sequence sets the AVR category, except if the Þrst clip is a video mixdown, then the second clip sets the AVR. In this case the sequence takes the AVR of the second clip.

Systems with 3D Effects Option

The bugs in this section apply to systems with the 3D Effects option installed.

✘ 23094 The opacity of a stamp holds for the duration of the effect only; the opacity goes back to 100 after the effect ends.

Workaround: Lower the level of the foreground opacity slider before the stamp.

✘ 22125 A 7.0.1 composition exported with media through OMFI will lose effect information for Fade to Color and Fade from Color effects. They will show blank icons with blue dots when they are imported; stepping through wonÕt show any effect.

OMF Import/Export

✘ If you are bringing an EQ or AudioSuite effect forward to ProTools using OMF, only the source media not the rendered effect media is brought forward. Any adjustments to the source audio beyond fades will need to be redone in ProTools.

✘ 22046 The Avid Composer system does not correctly import a Photoshopª graphic created on a transparent background that uses a blend to transparency. The blended portion is imported as a soft white outline.

Workaround: Files created with the same blending to an alpha channel will look correct.

Part 0130-01390-01 Rev. A Known Bugs

Page 74: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

74 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

✘ 22555 If you import an OMF with alpha composition and change the resolution on import, you may encounter problems if you delete the media clip and then attempt to reimport the Þle to the same bin. If you attempt to reimport the same Þle to the same bin (or to a different bin while the Þrst bin is open), the system imports the composition but not the media.

Workaround: Close the bin, open another bin, and import the Þle to the new bin. You can also try closing and relaunching the Avid Com-poser application and then reimporting the Þle.

✘ 22879 You cannot export AVR 70 or AVR 75 from Release 7.0.1 to Release 6.x versions of the Avid Composer application. Release 7.0.1 versions of AVR 70 and AVR 75 are not compatible with earlier releases.

✘ 23064 You cannot export an OMF composition to a remote volume if you do not have write permission to the root level of the volume. You will get an ÒUnable to export the bin ÞleÓ message and the system may create a Þle that cannot be deleted until you quit the Avid Com-poser application.

Workaround: Make sure you have write permission to the root level if you are going to export an OMF composition to a remote volume.

QuickTime Import/Export

✘ 18476 OMF support is not in AppleÕs QuickTime 3.0.

Digitizing

✘ 23038 Locators in subclips are in the wrong place after batch digitiz-ing.

Known Bugs Part 0130-01390-01 Rev. A

Page 75: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 75

✘ 22981 On systems with a 2D effects board, Option-clicking for clip info in the Digitize Tool doesnÕt work.

✘ 22914 Digitize allows capture to begin on a mismatched tape. If you have a Non-Drop Frame (NDF) tape and a portion of the tape is Drop Frame (DF), the DF portion canÕt be digitized due to the NDF designa-tion of the source. The message ÒThe source tape is non-drop frame but a drop frame tape was expected. Please insert the correct non-drop frame tapeÓ appears. Once you press OK, digitizing will abort.

Editing

✘ 22986 Creating a sequence from the contents of the clipboard and loading it into the Record monitor causes an error. (You create a sequence from the Clipboard contents by grabbing the sequence icon on the Clipboard monitor and dragging it to a bin.) You may see an error message or the system may hang. If the error message occurs or the system hangs, exit to the Finder and restart the Avid Composer system.

Grouping and Multicamera

✘ 21889 The in/out ÒiLÓ markers donÕt display when you are in Quad Split Mode.

✘ 21103 If you apply a Picture-In-Picture to a V1 only multicam sequence and play it back, what you see is playback of the black background only.

✘ 21103 When you use the Decompose command on a sequence that contains Group or Multigroup clips, the media will remain linked to the original clips.

Part 0130-01390-01 Rev. A Known Bugs

Page 76: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

76 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

Audio

✘ 22992 When clips are digitized as audio only, the Þller level is at 15ire when loaded in the monitor.

Workaround: Cut a piece of video in so there is an AVR for reference, then take the video out after youÕve Þnished digitizing.

✘ 22485 CanÕt import 8-bit AIFF or SD2 audio.

✘ 22719 Aggressive moving of the faders before an Automation Gain recording begins can result in a DIGI_INIT_OVERRUN error. If you move the faders a lot before recording starts, the system may become overloaded with extraneous volume-adjust messages.

PAL

✘ 22605 The Avid Composer system does not warn you if you import method 2 clips into a method 1 project. Since the audio play rate between method 1 and method 2 PAL projects is different, audio from a method 1 project will not play in a method 2 project.

Effects

✘ 23147 When you adjust the crop sliders on a lower track of a multi-track composite, the top level is still rendered and plays incorrect parameters for the track you just adjusted. This does not happen when you directly manipulate effects, use position sliders, or add a keyframe, unless you adjusted the crop Þrst and the change did not register.

✘ 23094 The opacity slider for the Stamp effect only works for the duration of the effect. This is a limitation for the Stamp effect. After

Known Bugs Part 0130-01390-01 Rev. A

Page 77: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 77

you Þnish playing the effect, the stamp opacity returns to the default value.

Workaround: If you want to create a stamp with a speciÞc opacity you can use key frames before and after you create the stamp. Just before you create the stamp, change the foreground opacity to the desired level. After you create the stamp, use another key frame to change the foreground opacity back to 100%.

✘ 23012 The system sometimes displays inappropriate messages when encountering a disk full situation when you are creating effects. For example, when you are re-creating a title, the system may display the message ÒAMEFS_FILE_SIZE_EXCEEDEDÓ when the disk becomes full.

✘ 23004 When Maintain Aspect Ratio is selected, an import that is not full frame will have black borders. These black borders will inhibit a graphic with alpha from being totally keyed out, or if the alpha is inversed, will key out more than it should.

Workaround: Crop the borders off if they are not keyed out.

✘ 22863 If an audio or video dissolve is created on a transition where one of the clips is currently ofßine, that effect wonÕt ÔunrenderÕ; or in the video case, return to real-time if the media is then relinked or brought on-line. This prevents you from being able to use ÒRender In to OutÓ.

Titles

✘ 23085 Aborting the creation of a title causes the error message: Òbase_user_abort.Ó

✘ 23070 Systems with older Advanced JPEG boards may display verti-cal lines with titles. This only happens on upgraded systems with older boards that do not support AVR 77. The problem may happen when you single step, play backward, or fast play through a title. It

Part 0130-01390-01 Rev. A Known Bugs

Page 78: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

78 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

can also happen when you render the top layer of a sequence contain-ing a title.

Workaround: Either render the sequence by selecting all tracks between IN/OUT marks or change the image by decreasing the fore-ground intensity slightly (for example, from 100% to 99%).

Film

✘ 23130 If you place IN and OUT marks on a 35mm audio only clip that has one or more locators, when you splice into the sequence you get an error message.

Workaround: Remove the locators before you splice in the clip.

✘ 22956 If Comments and Locators are selected in Optical List, they also show up in the assemble list.

✘ 22933 If in the Cut List Tool you get an Optical List in Optical Block format, and select Show Transition Effects as Cuts from the Assem-ble List options, you may get an error message viewing the list. For example, if you create a sequence with three cuts, place dissolves on the two transitions, and then place a segment effect such as a ßop, blow-up, or paint, on the third shot, it will happen.

Workaround: Use the Columnar format.

✘ 22912 If you do a digital cut with Burn-In with the Media Reader/Reader 1 set to LTC, the footage count that is burned in is incorrect. The Þeld count repeats when the frame count changes improperly.

Workaround: Set the Media Reader to VITC during the digital cut.

✘ 22850 If you start at the head of a sequence and type +10000, you only go to +1000.

Workaround: Type +5000 twice.

Known Bugs Part 0130-01390-01 Rev. A

Page 79: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 79

✘ 22700 Burn-in on digital cut is off by a Þeld at video rate. If you do a digital cut at video rate with Enable Burn-in on, the timecode is correct when the burn-in starts, but the edgecode incorrectly starts at 00 1999+ 15.

✘ 22672 Creating a title while in MultiCamera Mode causes display problems when playing. After saving the title, itÕs placed in the Source monitor and you remain in MultiCamera Mode. When you play the sequence the quad image from the Source monitor plays on top of the image in the Record monitor, causing a ßickering effect.

Workaround: If you leave MultiCamera Mode, and then go back into it, the sequence plays Þne.

✘ 22611 Confusing error message digitizing with Media Reader. If you set the Media Reader Tool to decode bits of VITC and then you digitize from a tape that doesnÕt have VITC, at the end of digitizing a clip you get the message ÒSM_FILM _ROLL_MISMATCH.Ó The clip is not digitized.

✘ 22475 A motion effect over 200 fps causes a Cut List error in PAL Þlm.

Workaround: Set the motion effect to less than 200 fps.

✘ 22333 When you create a new PAL project, and select Þlm options, the next dialog box incorrectly defaults to 25 fps. It should default to 24 fps.

✘ 21913 Switching from 2-line to 3-line project settings in the Media Reader Tool, then switching back to 2-line, causes the original 2-line settings to be corrupted. Reselecting custom settings doesnÕt correct them, you have to re-create your settings.

✘ 21906 You canÕt digitize if Media Reader is set to Start/End Timecode and no VITC is incoming. YouÕll see the error SM_DF_NDF_MISMATCH. No clip is digitized.

Part 0130-01390-01 Rev. A Known Bugs

Page 80: Avid Media Composer and Film Composer Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

80 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes

✘ 21851 You canÕt change Cut List counting if you use settings from unlike projects. For example, if you create and save a Cut List view setting in a 35mm project then open a 3-perf project using the 35mm project setting, when you switch the Show Durations As to 3-perf, the Cut List still counts as 35mm.

Workaround: When you want to switch counting, close one project and then reopen the different project.

✘ 21607 If you enter the wrong key number when you are digitizing the error message you see is unclear. (The error message is ÒSM_FILM_ROLL_MISMATCH.Ó) If you see that error message, try reentering the key numbers.

✘ 21511 The text processor, Vantage, may have problems opening and printing very large cut lists.

Workaround: Open the cut list in another word processor, such as Microsoft¨ Word, ClarisWorksª, or BBeditª.

✘ 21417 The Cut List window status isnÕt saved as part of the Work-space User settings.

✘ 21043 If you choose Modify from the Clip menu, select Set Key Number Generic (PreÞx), and then click OK, youÕll get an error mes-sage if you hadnÕt entered any key numbers when you created the clip. (The error message is ÒCM_NO_SOURCEÓ.)

✘ 20699 Field width in Burn-In tool does not work on Digital Cut.

✘ 20253 Audio track information appears incorrectly in exported ALE. For example, if you create a clip with VA1-2, A4 then export it in ALE format, the log displays only tracks A1-2.

Media Tool

✘ 22893 You canÕt delete audio clips from the Media Tool if their track designation is above A8.

Workaround: Drag the clip to a bin and delete it from the bin.

✘ 22753 Opening the Media Tool in Frame view with PAL and NTSC media on your system might take some time, because the 3D hard-ware has to switch the frame rate for every clip that has a different frame rate. This only happens with the 3D effects board. Systems with the 3D effects module will display black in frames that have a different frame rates from the hardware setup.

FieldPak

✘ 20760 FieldPak¨ clips digitized in EditCamª and imported into Media Composer from the DeskTop FieldPak Adapter display a half line of active video 2 lines early, at line 261 instead of line 263.

Hardware and Software Limitations

This section describes known limitations in hardware and software. Some of these limitations are in Avid products and some are in third-party products used with your Avid Composer system.

✘ Media Composer 7.0.1 supports real-time AVR 77 playing at up to 500KB per frame. Portions of 2-stream AVR 77 images exceeding 500KB per frame may require rendering.

✘ Timeline scrolling can introduce playback delays that may adversely affect the performance of the VTR emulation feature. If you are using VTR emulation, you should turn off ÒScroll While Play-ingÓ in Timeline settings.

✘ On occasion, it is possible to see the following message:

Exception: 3D_EFFECTS_UNDERRUN

This happens in rare situations while playing two or more 3D effects within close proximity of each other.

Workaround: Render one or more of the 3D effects.

✘ The 888 audio peripheral is limited to acquiring the digital sync from channels 1 and 2. To use channels 3 through 8, you must have a valid digital signal coming in on either channels 1 or 2.

If the ÒDIGITALÓ LED is solid, there is a valid digital signal to sync to. If the LED is blinking, then the 888 is using a default sample rate (most likely the Video Slave Driverª. If you do not have a valid digital sync source, recording side effects include: the correct material that is jittery, random garbage, or silence.

✘ Switching deck control cables from a VTR deck to a PCM-7030 or PCM-7050 DAT deck can cause the error:

SBV_UNKNOWN_COMMAND

Workaround: There are two ways to solve this problem:

¥ Eliminate the need to swap cables by using two cables: attach the PCM-70x0 deck to one serial port, and the other deck to the other serial port.

¥ Create two deck conÞgurations and switch between them when switching the deck cables.

a. Duplicate the Deck ConÞguration setting in the settings list.

b. Name one setting ÒPCM DAT.Ó Open it and conÞgure it for your VTR deck.

c. Name the other setting ÒVTR deck.Ó Open it and conÞgure it for your VTR deck.

d. When switching cables, switch the conÞguration to the appro-priate deck.

✘ 20183 The Mitsubishi 21Ó high resolution monitor displays two hor-izontal lines at one-third and two-thirds of the screen display. The Þrst line appears across all video loaded in the Source monitor and Record monitor. This is a function of the Mitsubishi monitor, not the Avid Composer application.

✘ 22493 When changing the memory allocated to the Media Composer application by using Get Info from the File menu, the Media Composer Info window displays the wrong preferred memory size. This is a function of the Macintosh OS 8.0 operating system.

✘ The ÒPlayback Alladin PIPÓ test does not work correctly when working in PAL mode.

Workaround: Turn off the ÒPlayback Alladin PIPÓ test before testing a PAL system. For information on turning the ÒPlayback Alladin PIPÓ test off in the Avid System Test utility, see the Avid System Test Setup and UserÕs Guide.
