8th Graders Travel to SNC-Lavalin
I graduated from UH-Clear Lake with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. In 2007, I completed my master’s degree in Christian Leadership from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. I also will complete a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Walden University and a Master’s degree in Education with an emphasis in Counseling in the
spring of 2018. I will begin my Doctorate in Educational Leadership in the fall of 2018. I have written three books and my next publication
will be released soon. This is my 13th year teaching. I have taught 8th grade Mathematics, Algebra 1, Pre-AP Algebra 2, Advanced
Quantitative Reasoning, and now AVID. I, first, was introduced to the AVID program as an Early College High School Mathematics Instructor. I have seen many students succeed using the AVID
strategies and are now attending colleges and universities. It brings me great joy when my students contact me and tell me how much they are
prepared for and are enjoying college life. My goal for the AVID program is to see more students prepared for the rigorous challenges of
advanced level and post secondary coursework.
HMJ AVID 8th Graders visited SNC-Lavalin on Friday,
December 13, 2017. Founded in 1911, SNC-Lavalin is one of the
leading engineering and construction companies in the world. The 8th Graders were shown the different tools and
methods that go into field surveying and laser scanning. The students gained hands-on
experience and more information about engineering
and STEM Careers.
AVID Strategy Spotlight: Tutorial Request Forms & POC
TRF stands for Tutorial Request Form. This is a writing template used to identify the question and gather as much information about their problem as possible. The students are required to complete the TRF before class and they use this to present their problem during tutorials.
POC stands for Point of Confusion. When creating their TRF the student must write a POC; this helps them identify exactly where they are having trouble understanding the classwork. It also guides the students and tutor on how to best help the student presenter solve their problem.
