Install a performance muffler. This will add sounds to the engine and will cost about $200 and can be installed yourself. 5. Coloured rims and headlights add a bit more intrigue to your car. 6. Keeping your vehicle in pristine conditionLOOK after your car by doing most, if not all of thefollowing...

• Check your oil regularly. Only top up with thecorrect type of oil as specified by your manufactur-er and when topping up your oil don’t exceed themaximum recommend level.

• Check your tyre pressure. Inflation should bechecked every fortnight when tyres are cold to therecommended pressure found on the owner manual.

• Power steering. Check your power steeringfluid regularly. Specific locations as to where tocheck fluid can be found on the car owner manual.

• Car battery. Check battery terminals regularlyto ensure they are clean and tight.

• Lights are critical for vehicle safety. Electricalcomponents including horns and window demistersneed to be checked as well to ensure correct opera-tion on a regular basis.

• Check you lights regularly to ensure they workcorrectly. Only use the recommended globes, thisinformation can be found in your owner’s manual.

• Check your radiator. Only inspect your coolingsystem when the engine is cold. Never remove theradiator cap when the engine is hot. Check coolantlevel regularly. If it requires regular topping up theremay be a leak in the system.

• Brakes are one of the most important parts of acar which should be checked regularly. Squealingbrakes, grinding on your rotors or unusual vibra-tions may indicate your brakes need replacing.

Another sign of worn brakes is poor brake per-formance and always ensure that your vehicle’sbrake fluid is full.

RIGHT: Check your oil regularly.

Benefits of regular servicesREGULAR servicing prolongsthe life of mechanical compo-nents, helps to maintain road-worthiness and contributes togreater reliability, economyand resale value.

Without regular servicingyou increase the potential ofbreakdowns and expensiverepairs. Refer to your owner'smanual for maintenance infor-mation specific to your car.You should service your newcar as often as is outlined inyour owner's manual.

For older cars, you need tohave at least an oil and filterchange every six months or10,000km, whichever comesfirst. All cars have differentservice requirements but aservice should at least contain:

• An engine oil change,• An engine oil filter

replacement,• A safety check.A safety check would

include operation of lights, condition of tyres and exhaustand operation of brakes andsteering. It's a good idea towash your car often, polish itat least twice a year and vacu-um it as required.

Avoid parking under trees(especially ones with birds) orin industrial areas, which maycontain heavy fallout.

To avoid paint damage, for-eign matter such as bird drop-pings should be cleaned offimmediately.

What is usually covered ina full car service?

A full car service at agarage of mechanic mayincludes oil change (engine oil, brake fluid, etc), changing air

and oil filters and spark plugs, wheel tuning and balancing, tyre change and outer bodyconditioning.

Full service at a car washindicates that in adding to thebasic washing of the car, theinterior glass will also bewashed and the seats alsocleaned and vacuumed seats.

What are the benefits ofregular servicing?

A car's full service history isa process which takes placebefore buying a used car.

The buyer should ask to seethe car's service book, to see ifthe car has been serviced ontime and according to theinstructions of the manufactur-er and if your potential buy hasthe required full service histo-ry.

This history shows that the

previous owners took propercare of the car; therefore, it ismore likely to be reliable.

The more the car was serv-iced the better it was taken careof and should be in better nick.

How often should I get mycar serviced?

You should get your carserviced every six months.

People often believe onlythe amount of kilometers(kms) driven is all that matters, but a quick read of almost anyvehicle's service scheduleshould help towards clearingthings up - 15,000 kms orevery 6 months.

Some newer cars will tellyou when they need their nextservice.

Seven mythsabout carsNRMA has identified the seven common mythsabout cars, and wants to fill you in on the truth.

1. Keep your doors unlocked so you can be res-cued easier in an accident.

Unlocked doors are more likely to open during acollision and create opportunities for occupants tofall out.

2. Let your engine warm up for several minutesbefore driving.

What was once good advice for cars back in theday, it is less so today because modern engineswarm up more quickly when they are driven.

3. Laundry detergents make a good car wash. You wouldn’t use car-wash to clean your clothes,

so you shouldn’t use laundry detergents to washyour car.

4. Premium fuel is the best for your car.It doesn’t hurt but it doesnt improve the perform-

ance of your car either.5. You can go a long way on ‘empty’.6. Constantly repair your car, even if it doesn’t

need it.The old adage, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ rings

especially true here – there is no use repairing yourcar on things that may need repairing ‘later downthe track.’

7. Engine oil should be changed every 5,000kms.For more information visit

http://www.nrma.com.au Oil checks and changes are done during a service.

Engine checks are carried out.
