From then it became dominated by women up until World War I. When the 1950’s arrived, the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley gave this style a whole new lease of life and introduced the teddy boy look. The Pompadour has been evolving ever since...

In The Beginning....

We looked deep into the Modern Myth trend to create a folkloric mythical being for our Mens Image entry. Taking inspiration from key words such as nostalgia, magical and cosmic we designed a feather trim jacket with a gold leaf touch to give an extra mystic edge.

Our model, Killian was given an extreme version of the Pompadour, which was curled and swept high with very short disconnected sides and had natural golden tones with flashes of colour to enhance the overall style.

For the finals, we evolved our ‘mythical creature’ into a more tailored, high-fashion male icon. Changing the overall look for a more wearable and commercial take on the original concept...

MENS IMAGE FINALSAW14/15...And so we created the ‘Cosmic Gentleman’.

We began by delving into the the true heritage of the English Gentleman, looking deep into style, hair and lifestyle. Fashion inspiration was of big importance and keeping to traditional designers was a must. Burberry was an obvious choice to be inspired by. The tradional trench has been on the scene since WW1 and has remained a key piece for mens wardrobes well into the 21st century. And so, a vintage Burberry was the garment of choice. To give our gent a cosmic and mythical feel we opted for gold trousers. This look was inspired by the designers at DAKS from their AW14/15 collection. To achieve this, we handpainted tailored grey trousers with metallic gold fabric paint.

When we found Ben, he had outgrown, thick curly hair, which gave us a great blank canvas. For the finished look his natural brown hair was accented with cool tones and swept back to produce a simplistic and mature look.

A classic gentleman’s style enhanced by geometric inspired colouring techniques.

Infinie Platine slices were placed in a tribal inspired pattern, slightly offset through the fringe section of the hair, then toned with DiaLight 9.11 + 9.12.The rest of the hair was globally coloured using DiaRichesse 5.12 + Clear

A COSMIC COIFFUREUsing a horseshoe shape disconnection, the hair was cut using ‘scissor over comb’ technique through the sides and back for a clean barbered effect. Then left ultra-long through the top and front, to allow Ben’s naturally thick wavy hair to be molded into our modern twist on the classic pompadour hairstyle.

Gold TrousersA key piece in the finished looked to establish a true regal and cosmic style to our new age ‘English Gentleman’.

Burberry TrenchA true status piece to represent tradition of the masculine heritage.The trench coat was created for military purposes, originally designed in 1895 for British officers fighting in the Boer War, the coat’s current form was developed in 1914, for soldiers in WWI. It remains relevant 116 years after it was first designed.

Oversized ScarfWool and cashmere blanket scarves were also a strong presence in the AW14/15 catwalks. We dressed Ben with a strong geometric print with dark contrasting tones to add further cultural richness to the overall look.

The HairDrawing from inspiration from the Pompadour, Ben’s haircut remains a soft but sculpted shape to compliment his face shape. Using natural tones, the colours are a combination of cool shades to compliment his naturally olive skin. Ben’s facial hair was an important finish to the look as it adds to the rugged, yet sophisticated look we were aiming for.
