Komen Blogs on Early Career Investigators

Cutting-edge breast cancer research relies on the talent and dedication of researchers whocan bring new insights to our understanding of breast cancer Komen is committed tosupporting todayrsquos young scientists and clinicians who are the future of breast cancerresearch Since 1982 Komen has supported more than 1100 early career investigatorsYou can read more about the work of four of our early career investigators

Paula Bos PhD is investigating a new way to treat breast cancer that hasmetastasized to the brainRobert Faryabi PhD is using big data to find new ways to treat triple negativebreast cancer (TNBC)

Elizabeth Wellberg PhD is studying how obesity and metabolism impact breastcancer recurrenceJennifer Guerriero PhD is trying to improve treatment response in peoplediagnosed with TNBC by targeting the immune system

Research Snapshots

Researchers including Komen-funded investigators Tracy Battaglia MDMPH (pictured left below) and Komen Scholar Julie Palmer ScD (pictured rightbelow) analyzed data from the Black Womenrsquos Health Study a study of 59000African-American women across the United States that started in 1995 Theirfindings published recently in Cancer Causes and Control show that African-American women with a low or high birth weight or born to older mothers may be atincreased risk of developing breast cancer This work highlights the importanceof research investigating why African-American women are more likely to die ofbreast cancer than white women More coverage of this work can be found here

The detection of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) is a promising way to potentiallymonitor treatment response and to predict metastatic progression In a recent NPJBreast Cancer publication Komen-funded investigator Gaorav Gupta MD (picturedbelow left) Komen Scientific Advisory Board member Lisa Carey MD (picturedbelow right) and colleagues developed a new blood test that can monitor changesin tumor mutations over time This test may be used to predict response to therapy inestrogen receptor-positive (ER+) metastatic breast cancer and it could help guidetreatment decisions for patients

People diagnosed with estrogenreceptor-positive (ER+) breast canceroften become resistant to standardtherapies In a new NatureGenetics publication funded in part byKomen Nikhil Wagle MD and teamshow that acquired mutationsin HER2contribute to treatmentresistance in patients with metastaticER+ breast cancer They demonstratedthat resistance could be reversed bycombining ER-directed therapies withthe irreversible HER2 inhibitor calledneratinib

Some tumor cells can spread todistant parts of the body where they liedormant or asleep These cells calleddisseminated tumor cells (DTCs) aredifficult to eliminate and can eventuallydevelop into metastatic tumors In

a Nature Cell Biology publicationKomen-funded investigator CandiceGrzelak PhD (pictured) CyrusGhajar PhD and colleagues showthat DTCs residing near bloodvessels are protected from the killingeffects of chemotherapy Theydemonstrate that targeting the areaaround blood vessels can sensitizebreast DTCs to chemotherapy and stopthe development of metastatic tumorsarising from DTCs More coverage onthis work can be found here
