General Information and Policies The Faculty offers a limited number of scholarships, fellowships, bursaries and special awards, as well as Graduate Research Scholarships, Graduate Teaching Assistantships, and Graduate Service Assistantships (please refer to “University Assistantships” in the Faculty of Graduate Studies section of this Calendar). Financial assistance is awarded by the Student Awards Committee of the Faculty. II. Awards in the Faculty ofGraduate Studies

The scholarship listed below is awarded by theGraduate Scholarship Committee of the Universityof Calgary. Application for this award is made onthe application form for graduate scholarshipswhich is available from the graduate departmentsor from the web at www.ucalgary.ca/UofC/faculties/GS/admin/forms.htm. Applications and allsupporting documentation must be sent to thedepartment in which the student will be registered.

Province of Alberta Graduate Scholarships andFellowships

IV.Government FinancialAssistance

The provincial and federal governments makeassistance available in the form of loans to students.In order to be eligible for assistance, a student mustbe a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident ofCanada and provide sufficient evidence that financialassistance is essential to enable the student tocontinue his/her education. The amount of assistancevaries according to marital status, the number ofdependents and enrollment status. Further detailsand application forms are available from

V. International StudentsInternational students planning to do graduate workat the University of Calgary should be aware thatmost Canadian scholarship programs requireCanadian citizenship or Permanent Resident status.However, the Government of Canada does supporta number of programs designed to assist individualswho wish to study in Canada on a study permit.These programs are usually organized throughagencies of the individual’s own government, andprospective students are encouraged to explorethese possibilities. These include the Columbo Plan,Special Commonwealth Africa Assistance,Economic Assistance to Francophone Africa, andCaribbean Assistance Program. Application is madethrough the Ministry of Education or through theappropriate government department in their owncountry.

VI. Other AwardsThe following entries describe national scholarshipswhich may be applicable to graduate programs atthe University of Calgary. Recipients of any ofthese awards held at the University of Calgary mayhave their program fees remitted by the Faculty ofGraduate Studies.

Alberta Community Development:

Alberta Historical Resources FoundationRoger Soderstrom Scholarship in HistoricalPreservation

Purpose: This scholarship is designed toencourage professional development andadvanced studies in the field of heritageconservation in Alberta.

Field of Study: Intended for university students atthe graduate level in disciplines relating toheritage preservation and research, focussingon Alberta. This can include studies inarchitectural restoration; area conservationand research, preservation planning and/orinterpretive development of archaeological,historical or palaeontological sites in theprovince, as well as related thematic work.

Value: One to two Awards up to $3,000 may begiven per year, based on the worthiness of theapplicant’s projects, and funds available fromthe endowment. However, the awards neednot be made every year.

Duration: In keeping with the Foundation’s policy,the duration of the award will be two years.Funding is for travel, subsistence whiletravelling, and material costs associated withthe research work. Payment of funds will bemade on the submission of invoices andreceipts for costs incurred. Other arrangementsmay be negotiated. A detailed report on theresearch completed must be provided beforethe award is paid in full. Successful candi-dates are requested to submit a copy of theirfinal thesis to the Foundation. Only one awardis given per student.

Eligibility: The applicant must be a Canadiancitizen or Permanent Resident, and have beenan Alberta resident for at least six monthsprior to the submission of the application.Selections will be based upon demonstratedacademic achievement or equivalent workexperience, and the relative value of theproject to Alberta.

Canadian International DevelopmentAgency Award Programme for Canadians

Value and Duration: $10,000 for up to 12 months.Supported by the award, the duration of thefield research/work/internship component onthe host country must be of 3 consecutivemonths at minimum.

Number: The number of awards will depend onbudgetary considerations.

Purpose: To give Canadians the opportunity tocontribute to the implementation of CIDA’sdevelopment priorities and to enhance theprofessional, technical and cross-cultural skillsof Canadians who wish to develop expertise ininternational development. The programprovides funding for research and serviceprojects which will be of benefit to the hostcountry and the individual. The program also

aims to promote better international linkagesand encourage long-term internationalpartnerships and cooperation.

Applicant Eligibility: All applicants must meet thefollowing conditions:(1) be Canadian citizens or permanentresidents of Canada at the time of application;(2) be registered in a recognized graduateprogram at the time of application (InnovativeResearch Awards and International EnterpriseCooperation Awards);(3) have relevant qualifications and substantivework experience related to the requirementsof the proposed development project(Professional Leadership Awards);(4) demonstrate a commitment to internationaldevelopment.

Project Eligibility: To be considered, the projectmust:(1) be feasible, of sound methodology andpractical in orientation;(2) contribute in an original but practical andfocused manner to addressing a developmentalneed of the host country;(3) address one or more of CIDA’s sixdevelopment priorities: basic human needs;women in development; infrastructureservices; human rights, democracy, goodgovernance; private sector development; andthe environment;(4) be carried out in collaboration with a hostcountry organization such as a public/privateagency, an educational institution, a non-governmental organization or a privatecompany;(5) be overseen by an advisor in Canadacommitted to assist the applicant during theproject implementation and provide a briefassessment of the project after its completion.For students applying under the InnovativeResearch and International EnterpriseCooperation Awards, the project advisor mustbe their thesis supervisor or program director.Applicants under the Professional LeadershipAwards may select an advisor in Canada or inthe host country.
