Western Australia’s resources sector, now valued at $105 billion in 2016-17, continues to be the backbone of the State’s economy.

Without mining and energy, our world couldn’t function.

Western Australia’s resources industry can be proud of the contribution we make to economic and social development.

To ensure our nationally significant industry is sustainable, industry development must take account of the environmental, social and safety needs of Western Australia.

The Department for Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety 2017 Awards for Excellence celebrate the projects and partnerships that are at the forefront of community partnerships, health, safety and environmental innovations. It is always encouraging to see companies and community groups in our State pushing the status quo and setting standards for industry nationally and internationally. By sharing these projects, the department is encouraging others in the resources sector to continually improve and be at the forefront of social, safety and environmental outcomes.

On behalf of the McGowan Labor Government, I applaud the efforts of all the 2017 Awards for Excellence entrants. I’d also like to congratulate the finalists who have demonstrated innovative thinking and used new technologies to safeguard our State. They are a credit to the resources sector.

The Hon. Bill Johnston MLAMinister for Mines and Petroleum

BANKSIA WOODLANDS – A RESTORATION GUIDE FOR THE SWAN COASTAL PLAIN Hanson Construction Materials and Kings Park and Botanic Gardens

This resource provides the first comprehensive overview for practitioners, researchers and policy makers to assist Banksia woodland restoration activities and decisions, and a platform from which to build future strategies so these iconic systems remain an important part of the ecosystem.

After successfully developing and implementing the Venturi Reverse Circulation Drilling Waste Removal System into its exploratory drilling activities to address safety concerns, Rio Tinto Iron Ore also identified several environmental benefits including reducing required ground disturbance, reducing hydrocarbon use and better managing drilling waste.

UTILISING MINING TECHNOLOGY FOR THE TRACKING AND MANAGEMENT OF REHABILITATION MATERIALS

Sinosteel Midwest Corporation and the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority

Sinosteel Midwest Corporation formed a seven-year research partnership with Kings Park Science (Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority) to tackle the complex environmental and biodiversity issues associated with post-mining restoration of a Threatened Ecological Community in a banded iron formation (BIF) landform.

Roy Hill Holdings has discovered the benefits of utilising technology to track rehabilitation materials, including automated storage of data, effective tracking and management of materials, management of weed infested topsoil, use as an auditing system and the potential to manage hostile wastes.

ABOUT THE AWARDS

12

Community Partnership Award

The design of the Community Partnership Award statue depicts strong partnerships that have matured and grown between resource companies and communities to leave a positive and long lasting legacy.

The gecko was chosen to represent the awards because they are seen as a bio-indicator. Geckos have specialist habitat requirements which take time to develop and their presence in mine site rehabilitation shows progress towards a healthy and functioning ecosystem.
