Welcome back to school everyone and welcome to our Reception class families. We hope you had a wonderful summer. Thankyou all for your good wishes, cards and presents at the end of the Summer term—we were all touched by your kindness.

Buildings

As you will have noticed, the refurbishment of the Year 2 classrooms, toilets and shared space was

completed on time during the summer. We also have a temporary office and staff room next to the

two classrooms. We would like to say a ‘Huge’ “THANK YOU” to Bournemouth Building

Services for all their hard work, finishing on time and producing an excellent result. The

next phase of refurbishment is due to start after half term in October . The massive task

of turning the main block into a Primary school commences—exciting!!

Message from Reception Class Teachers

The children have all settled into their Reception year extremely well and we are loving learning about each and every little character. Please be assured that a few tears in the morning at this stage is still ok and that all the children settle quickly. Any problems, we would always ring you.

Please can we ask that all children are in class by 8.30 am so that they can take full advantage of their morning work. At half past 8 each teacher will be stationed with a group for a targeted learning focus. We would like everyone to have the same access to their learning experiences. If you would like to talk to us please wait to one side to allow the other children to come into the classroom quickly. Reception children will have all received their first reading books this week and their first pack of sound cards. (These are always updated on a Friday). Reading is one of the most important things you can do to support your child at home. Please take the time to share the story with your child and sign the yellow reading record to say you have read at home. Please see the top tips to help with reading at the front of your reading records.

Junk Modelling

When you are sorting out your recycling, please bear your little ones creativity in mind. We would love boxes or clean plastic containers or bottle tops that can be transformed into something wonder-ful. Please hand any usable items to your teacher.

Thank you for being such supportive parents. An exciting year lies ahead!

Message from Year 1 Teachers

So far in Year 1 we have had an exciting start to our superhero topic. The children had a fantastic time showing their favourite toys in the "Action man open day". We are looking forward to the children writing all about their favourite toys in the upcoming weeks.

Please be aware that the first reading books have been handed out to children this week, the children will receive two books which will be changed weekly. As much reading at home as possible would be greatly appreciated as this goes a long way to helping them across all of their work.

Well done to all the children on a fantastic start to year 1, we are very proud of you!

From all of the year 1 team.

Message from Year 2 Teachers

In Year 2 the children have been really excited by their new reward system – collecting gold coins!! They

have then been able to spend these coins in school on such things as sitting in the class comfy chair,

doing show and tell, playing with Lego, going outside and some of them have been saving up to aim for

50 to have a Disco Party!!

We have been learning about the tragic events of the SS Forfarshire disaster and Grace Darling’s rescue of the survivors. The

children have been able to write a recount of the events and will use this, along with their art and ICT skills, to make a paper

animation. We also have an exciting visit coming up from a member of the RNLI crew who will talk to us

about the roles and processes of sea rescues today.

We are very grateful to all those parents who have supported their child in bringing in

loose change for the Brother Lionel collection – please may this continue.

As part of our ‘All at Sea’ theme, we are planning to make some wall art depicting beautiful sea creatures! If pos-

sible, could you please send in any of the following items to help with our creation: jam jar lids, unwanted CDs,

bottle tops, plastic pegs, shells, and small pebbles? We will also be learning to make a simple circuit in Science

so that we can light a bulb in our very own lighthouses. For this, each child will need a cardboard tube (e.g. a

kitchen roll or Pringles tube) if possible please. Many thanks.

The Year 2 Team

St Peter’s School has a long tradition of supporting the work of Brother Lionel.

Brother Lionel is a De La Salle brother who was head of the Art department at St Peter’s school in 1947. He then followed a calling from God to live and work in India, to help relieve the suffering of some of the country’s poorest children and their families.

Each year our senior school students raise money through weekly small change collections, cake sales, concerts and fund-raising events. Last academic year, £5453.90 was raised and sent to his charity ‘Reaching the Unreached’ to help him contin-ue his important and live changing work.

Brother Lionel is now 91 years old and despite ill health has a’ very hands’ on approach with those who come into his care. The children call him ‘Thatha’ the Tamil word for Grandpa, he affectionately calls the youngest children ‘his pets’ and the older ones ‘little brother’ or ‘little sister’

Reaching The Unreached (RTU) is based in Kallupatti in central southern India. The charity’s whole philosophy is based on the words of Jesus ‘‘He that welcomes one such little child in my name welcomes me’

The charity began by building villages with houses, schools and hospitals to help those who had been abandoned, left on the roadside, suffering and in need of help. The first primary school that Brother Lionel set up is called St Peter’s, after our school. Today it continues to provide an education to over 280 children each year alongside the nursery schools, secondary school, children’s homes, medical centers and housing programs that the charity supports.

From RUT August Newsletter……….

Our hearts are overwhelmed to see the developments and the changes that are taking place in the lives of our children and the poorest of the poor. We don’t have words to thank you all for your constant support. Our hearts remain with

gratitude. Thank you.
