CoastGuardBandJoinsNewYorkPhilharmonicinJuly4thCelebrations
ThisyeartheUSCoastGuardBandhadthedistinctpleasureofjoiningtheworldfamousNewYorkPhilharmonicinconcertsonJuly3rdand4thatthePhilharmonic’shomeofAveryFischerHallatLincolnCenter.Toopenthisspecialpairofsoldoutconcerts,MaestroBramwellToveyledthePhilharmonicwithAaronCopland’sFour Dance Episodes from RodeoandfollowedbybringingprincipaltrombonistandvirtuosoJoeAlessitothefrontofthestagetopremieretheorchestralversionofatromboneconcertoentitledLincoln Tunnel Cabaret,writtenbytheconductorhimself.
TheCoastGuardBandopenedthesecondhalfof theconcertswithCaptainMeganat thehelm, performing John Philip Sousa’s The Glory of the Yankee Navy and following withMasquebyBritishcomposerKennethHesketh.CaptainMeganthenchosetopaytributetotheCityofNewYorkandlegendaryconductorLeonardBernstein(NewYorkPhilharmonicMusicDirector1958-1969,LaureateConductor1969-1990)byperformingselectionsfromBernstein’sCandide.
ThePhilharmonicandCoastGuardBandconcludedtheconcertswithagrandcollaboration,joiningforcestohonorallpastandpresentservicemembersbyperformingtheService Medley,ledbyCaptainMegan.MaestroToveycontinuedthepatrioticcelebrationbyconductingtheSousamarchesHands Across the SeaandThe Liberty Bell.ThecombinedensemblessenttheenthusiasticaudiencesontheirwaywithrousingrenditionsofThe Stars and Stripes Forever,conductedfirstbyMaestroTovey,withCaptainMeganreturningtothepodiumtoconductasecondencoreperformance.
ThesecollaborativeconcertswerecertainhighlightsofthetheyearformembersoftheCoastGuardBandandaudiencesalike.BeinginoneofthegreatestcitiesintheworldwithtwoofthegreatestensemblesintheworldmadeforanunforgettabletwodaysandwasaperfectwaytocelebrateAmerica’sIndependenceDay.
AWARDS
InMay2013,themembersoftheUSCoastGuardBandwhoparticipatedintheDeepwaterHorizonclean-upeffortsintheGulfofMexicowereawardedcitationsfortheirmeritoriousservice:
Master Chief Musician Ginny SturmreceivedtheCoastGuardCommendationMedalinJune2013foroutstandingachievementastheMusicianRatingForceMasterChief,thesoleofficiallydesignatedadvo-catefortheMUratingintheCoastGuard.
InJuly2013,Chief Warrant Officer Richard WymanwaspresentedtheCoastGuardCommendationMedal forhisoutstandingserviceas theBand’sAssistantDirector.He ledhundredsofperformancesworldwide,completedhisdoctorateinconducting(ABD)attheUniversityofConnecticut,andservedastheprojectmanagerfortherenovationofLeamyConcertHall.
InJuly2013,Chief Musician Elizabeth JacksonreceivedtheCoastGuardAchievementMedalforelevenyearsofservice.Asprincipalflutist,sheperformedimpeccably, leadingtheupperwoodwindsectionwithherradianttone,exquisitephrasing,andexceptionalintonation.

TheCoastGuardBandwasveryhappytorenewitstraditionalparticipationintheGrandHavenCoastGuardFestivalontheshoresofLakeMichiganandtheGrandRiver.WhatbeganasapicnicforCoastGuardmembersin1924tookonitsofficialstatusasCoastGuardFestivalbeginningin1937.TodaytheFestivalencompassesaweekoffamily-friendly
activitiesincludingacarnival,concerts,memorialceremony,parade,andfireworks. OnAugust2theBandwashonoredattheCoastGuardFestivalwiththeunveilingofanewlycommissionedpainting,“StrikeuptheBand,”byBryanSnuffer.ThepaintingdepictsCaptain Kenneth Meganconducting;MUC Kelly Watkins,MU1 Chris Lane,andMUCS Joel Flunkerontrumpet;andMU1 Jeff EmerichandMUC Josh Thomasonsaxophone.You’llnoticethatCoastGuardAcademycadetmarchingunitsarealsoportrayed. Captain Lewis J. Buckley, USCG ret.,wasalsogivenspecial recognitionhonoringhis1981compositionof themarch“CoastGuardCity,USA.”ThetitlereferstoGrandHaven’slongcherishednickname,whichwasfinallymadeofficialbya1998ActofCongress.ThepieceisperformedwhenevertheCoastGuardBandvisitsGrandHaven,andthissummerCaptainBuckleywasinvitedbacktoleadadefinitiverendition. TheCoastGuardBandperformedatseveralfestivaleventsincludingtheNationalMemorialCeremonyrememberingthefateofthefirstcutterEscanaba,sunkbyaGermantorpedoin1943withthelossofallbuttwocrewmembers,aswellasallotherCoastGuardmenandwomenwhohavegiventheirlivesinservicetoournation.TheEscanabawasthefirstUSCGCutter home ported inGrandHaven and the annual ceremony takes place in the aptly named Escanaba Park.AnotherhighlightoftheFestivalwastheCoastGuardBand’sAugust2eveningconcertfeaturingmarches,patrioticvocalarrangements,andarousingsetbytheUSCGDixielandBand.

Sullivan.
