Johann and Sofe AWE
Our ancestors, Johann and Sofe AWE, would be proud to see how their family has grown and prospered...and maybe a little embarrassed to find themselves the center of attention as we celebrate what anAWEsome family they started! They are indeed the center of attention as we reflect back nearly twocenturies to pursue our “roots” and better understand the circumstances of their lives that brought themto the United States. According to “Germans to America”, Vol #9, pages 44-45, Johann and Sofe arrivedon the ship “Humboldt” which sailed from Hamburg, Germany, arriving in New York on December 20,1854. Also onboard were Sofe’s parents, Joachim, age 55, and Caroline, age 53. Sofe is listed as“Sophie”, age 27, and apparently not yet married to Johann, age 28, whose last name was transcribed as“AUHL”. The WIETING family’s surname was transcribed as “WITTING”.
Verbal famiy history contends that two of Johann’s brothers also came tothis country about the same time, but currently there is no supporting datato prove this. If anyone has any “leads” or further information about ourancestors, please pass that along to any of us who are continuing thegenealogical research, for the benefit of all.
Shown here is Sofe’s mother, Caroline WIETING. The cardboard frame is embossed with the name of Anderson photography studio. Caroline wasonly 53 when arriving in the U.S. in 1885, and appears to be much olderthan that in this photo. She died in New Holstein WI in 1880 at age 79.
The WIETING Family
Sofe’s parents were Joachim and Caroline (nee: BASTIAN) WIETING. Joachim Ludwig WIETING wasborn on July 19, 1799 in Uckermark, Germany and died in New Holstein, Wisconsin in 1865. HannaCarolina Margaretha BASTIAN WIETING was born on April 12, 1801 in Marienhof, Germany(Jürdenstorf) and died in New Holstein, Wisconsin in 1880. The WIETINGs were married on July 18,1823 and emigrated with their children, all of whom were born in or near Sukow, Germany (nearTeterow) and are listed here in a brief outline:1. Frederick C. WIETING (b 4/25/1824, d 1/15/1907), married 1/1/1855 to Fredericka S. BASTIAN
(b 7/18/1835, d 11/21/1909), seven children, served in the Civil War2. Joachim Ludwig WIETING, Jr., (b 1826, d 4/29/1897), married 1/1/1855 to Sophia LEVERENZ
(b 8/1826, d 4/29/1910), five children, served in the Civil War3. Sofe WIETING (b 11/24/1828, d 2/19/1899), married Johann AWE (b 3/16/1831, d 2/15/1916),
seven children4. John C. WIETING (b 3/23/1833, d 7/10/1907), married, six children5. William WIETING (b 1837, d 1855 at sea during the voyage from Germany)6. Christina WIETING married Mr. LUCKOW, three children
The AWE and WIETING Families in New York, Then Wisconsin
Johann and Sofe AWE first lived in Lockport, New York for 12 years, where five of their seven childrenwere born. Sofe’s parents, Joachim and Caroline WIETING, lived in Wolcottsville, New York during thatsame time, then lived briefly in Roberts, Ford County, Illinois, before settling in New Holstein, CalumetCounty, Wisconsin in the early 1860s. Johann and Sofe also moved to New Holstein in 1865, after whichtheir last two children were born. When grown, five of their children moved west to Clark County tofarm and raise their families. The two youngest stayed in the New Holstein area.
East central and central Wisconsin were similar to the land the AWE family had left in MecklenburgProvince (northeastern Germany), quite fertile for farming and raising dairy cattle. Apparently, Johannwas at least moderately successful at farming and by their appearance in a later photograph (see cover),Johann and Sofe appeared to have had a pretty good life.
