MISSING F E I E N D .

Inquiry is requested for Mrs. Ann .Toung, nee MacDougall, who left Manchester, England, for Australia oi- New Zealand, about 30 years ago, with her husband. I t is supposed they stayed some time in Melbourne. Mr. Young died, and his wife afterwards married a farmer whose name is unknown; be also died, and it is reported she was afterwards murdered, when preparing to leave for Scotland, hy her own servant, and that the ofiender was executed. The woman sought for was born in Lochgilphead, Scotland, where a man named Malcolm Turner arrived from Australia or New Zealand some time ago, and has been making inquiries regarding her. Inquiry is made at the instance of Mrs. Mary Gale Ferguson nSe MacDougall, who writes from 19, Derby St., Leven.shueme, Manchester, regarding the missing friend, who was her aunt.

Mrs. Ferguson has heard that her aunt has left property, which is now in the hands of the Curator of Intestates of one of the Colonies, and that the man Turner, who siie states is not related to the deceased, is endeavoring to claim the estate left by her.—O. 6681, 12th November, 1885.

CO. 'YJIH,.—Captain Smith being about to relinquish for a time the charge of the Police Department, a position he has held for the last fourteen years, feels that he cannot do so without placing on record an expression of his appreciation of the manner in which the various members of the Force discharge their duties, fre<iuciitly under very trying circumstance.';.

The efficiency of a Police Force, especially of one like that in this Colony, small in numbers and scattered over an immense extent of country, depends in a very great measure: firstly, on a ready and loyal obedience by its members to all orders issued by their Chief, and, secondly, on the exercise by its members of common sense, discretion, and tact in the discharge of their duties.

Captain Smith feels a pride and pleasure in recording that the possession of the.se qualities by the members of the Police Force in this Colony, in some instances in a marked degree, has enabled him to maintain it in an efficient state.

He is especially desirous of thanking the Inspectors, Sub-Inspectors, and other subordinate Officers, for their willing, loyal, and able assistance they have invariably rendered him, an assistance that he feels sure they will continue to render to the Officer appointed to occupy the position of Superintendent of Police.

M. S. SMITH, Superintendent of Police.
