TRANSCRIPT
‘What if…?’ is the theme we would like to
explore in 2014 when as a Division we commit
ourselves again to our 40 days of prayer and
fasting.
What would be your ‘what if?’ Let me explain!
This week I received the following text from a
twitter account.
“The moment Christians decide to stand
together as the family of God, the forces of
hell will tremble and truth will win!”
What if this happened throughout our Division?
What if we decide to stand together as the
family of God in the Division - would the forces
of hell tremble and truth win? I believe so, and
one way we stand together is through our
commitment to the 40 days of prayer and
fasting in 2014. What would we see take
place? We would see more of God at work.
There would be more people finding freedom,
discovering the truth of Jesus, getting saved
and discipled but I must admit we would also
see conflict where the forces of hell are at war
with this paradigm. We are The Salvation
Army.
What if? What would you pray for in faith for
your Corps or Centre? What would be your
‘what if’ request or desire?’ We will be asking
every Corps and Centre in the Division for a
‘What if’ prayer request, so that we will all be
able to pray in faith for each other.
David and Michele Terracini will be emailing
you all soon with more details about these
important 40 days.
We pray that as we stand together as the
family of God in the Division, and if we ask
anything according to His will, and if we know
He hears us, then we know He will do a mighty
work in us. 13 I write these things to you who believe in the
name of the Son of God so that you may know
that you have eternal life. 14 This is the
confidence we have in approaching God:
that if we ask anything according to his will, he
hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—
whatever we ask—we know that we have
what we asked of him. 1 John 5:13-15

God bless.

MENTAL HEALTH WEEK
Pindari Services Resident Recovery Program took the
theme of this year’s Mental Health Week of “We Are
All In This Together” to another level. Staff from all
programs were briefed on what they could expect,
which was to experience first hand what it is like for
many of the people we work alongside who are
hospitalised in Mental Health units.
All staff were assigned a number rather than use their
names and, from that point on, were treated as
patients, with a member of staff playing the role of a
hospital worker. Most ‘patients’ complied with the
rules, becoming compliant. Others became recalcitrant,
even defiant. All of them felt their liberty had been
taken away. Comments included “I felt like a
non-human, just a number”; “I felt as if I didn’t have any
control”; “Any concerns I had were ignored”, “I felt
genuinely disempowered”.
Staff were also shown a video featuring the story of
Heidi Everett, a Melbourne artist and musician. Ms
Everett (diagnosed with schizophrenia) spoke of her
experience of the mental health system and hospitals
that was similar to the role play undertaken.
The second half of the morning consisted of each staff
member taking it in turns to play the role of a new
resident of Pindari, going through the intake process
whilst listening to voices through headphones. The
voices were similar to what people who experience
auditory hallucinations describe, often repetitive,
negative sound bites. This was an amazing experience
for all staff and the feedback was overwhelming. Many
‘residents’ could not concentrate on the questions
being asked of them. Some felt that all they could do
was nod in what they thought was the right moment in
a conversation. One ‘resident’ said, “The voices would
laugh at me and make horrible comments which made
it difficult to do anything. I actually had to press ‘pause’,
but I know people living with this don’t get to do that”.
Most people explained that the voices made it
extremely difficult to communicate effectively.
Surprisingly, those doing the questioning were
profoundly affected too. They found themselves to be
more patient with the individual, more willing to take
things slowly with the ‘resident’ as they knew that they
were experiencing hearing voices.
The morning was a great success, broadening minds,
expanding boundaries, challenging stereotypes and
changing perceptions.

Christmas Offering 2013 School Bus for Catherine Booth School Andaman Island, India North The Salvation Army started working in Andaman Island following the devastating tsunami in the region. One of the most recent ministries (started in 2011) is the Catherine Booth School, which caters for 50 children from nursery to Year 5, aged 2 to 11 years. Children travel up to 6 km to the school, imposing safety risks on them - particularly during the rain season. A school bus will provide the children with the much needed transport, but it will also allow the community to use it as an emergency vehicle. Get on board! Help us raise $52,250 this Christmas for the children in Andaman School.

“I have been using PLP for almost 8 years and I find it a great tool
for ministry. To me, the value lies in giving people the opportunity to
evaluate their own… response to situations. If they determine that
there could be a better response, options are given… People who truly
engage in PLP finish feeling better about themselves and armed with
tools to face the future.”
Major Bruce Robinson
(Senior Courts & Prisons Chaplain)
“I have used PLP with clients in the community and referred to me
by the courts. PLP gives people the opportunity to explore how they
think, feel, and behave, as well as discovering new ways of managing
situations…. A wonderful tool for those who minister to a hurting
world in God's name, for His glory.”
