Imagined the region as a flowing river, absorbing everything and anything in its way. So vast i ts inhabitant is diverse, ecologically expanding, divided into several group. Alongside the river banks the soil is so ferti le, a haven for plants and fruits, attracted many, near and far. The river keeps on flowing, bringing with it the seeds from far away that nourishes the soil. This happened for hundreds of years, and the landscape keep changing throughout. Southeast Asia, the place for more than 600,000,000 people (and counting) is one of the fastest growing population on earth. The region personified by the complexity of i ts poli t ical and cultural landscape, and the diversity of i ts ethnic and language as well as religion. I t was the region that once gave birth to the great civil ization. Once known as Suvarnabhumi or the Golden Land, the region flooded with people of all sorts. I t became a meeting place, from the West to the East, the batt leground for trading and mili tary strategy.

The ancient kingdoms rise and fall, the conquerors come and go, the land destroyed and rebuild. Yet, the river sti l l keeps on flowing, absorbing the remains of the forgotten past. The region offers so much than we can ever understand. Sometime il logical and absurd, irrational at best. The spiri t that once proud and glorified turn into a ghost, i t never really goes away, only half -remembered. This ghost systematically buried beneath the grandiosity of modern utopia. Now the river is changing its color. New borders are formed; new order is created. The question remains, how do we recognized ourselves within the regional history that was so rich, but at the same time decayed as a days passed by? Is i t possible to revived this spiri t of the ‘f lowing river’ while negotiate with the new demand in contemporary li fe?

The flowing river is symbolic to the fluidity, of identi ty, place and ideology. I t also personified the current state of the region being in f lux. This exhibition does not seek to answer them, rather to look at the burgeoning sensibili ty from the current generation through a lens of five artists from three SEA countries; Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. Each of them offer different tastes of what is l ike being in this entanglement and tracing back the spiri t of the ‘river’ in the consciousness while dealing with an external force that shape reali ty. This is the manifestation of being in the present – a new generation expressing their hope and concern. The exhibition takes multiple entry point, creating a space for contemplating and dialogue among them. Axis in Praxis continue it effort as a platform for young and emerging artist from SEA region. Most of the artist here seen as prospect to break the industry with plenty of potential in their abundance. Each of them present an individual narrative that can be trace back to their upbringing, environment and influence – be it in socio-poli t ic, popular and consumerism culture, or interrogating identi ty and everydayness.

Malaysia artists, Ho Mei Kei and Nik Mohd Shazmie take on different aspect of social l i fe where the entanglement with power relation is inevitable. Ho Mei Kei exploring the concept of play in her cri t icism towards the educational system. The painting divided into two parts, one side is ful l appropriation of exercise book cover complete with text and the school logo. There is a subtle polit ical commentary while the overall painting presented in a playful manner. Sample of Malaysian bank note arrange in linear manner on the right side of the plane. The

juxtaposition of the school book and money gives an impression of the artist’ concern on the significant of poli t ical power towards the structure of educational system and the pressing issues surrounding the race, polit ic and meritocracy. While Nik Mohd Shazmie had looking into the history of the region where the concept of ‘serumpun’ (one root) often used as a tagline to foster regional unity between Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. The artist asserting his own commentary on the issues with the three emblematic animal of each country – the Garuda, Lion and Malayan Tiger as a subject matter. There is the air of optimistic despite the complex relationship between the three nation where he deemed the situation as ‘under construction’. His painting often invited us to explore the whole surface, where he reconstructing the whole picture from a disjointed image, as a way to build their synthetic relation. I t is a paradox of the current relation between the SEA countries, while culturally connected there is always an underlying tension in its poli t ical current.

Both Thai artists, Anchalee Arayapongpanich and Kit t isak Thapkoa, contrasting each other while interspersing the subjects of similar weight in current contemporary SEA society. The former looking into a fi lm culture as a framework of feminine empowerment. The portraits featured women with the big eye, reminiscence the manga-esque approached while portraying each of them in their role for the fi lm in a convincing posed. Arayapongpanich repurpose the power of media and consumerism to assert sensitivi ty of women’s role in the society that is free from the limitation of ideas, expression and strength. Her meticulous painting stimulates the multi - layered dimension of feeling, ambience and lighting, inspired by the fi lm photography. While Kit t isak Thapkoa goes back to the tradition of Buddhist symbolism, confronting the reali ty of today’s materialistic morali ty. The gruesome images of animals, bestial, human limbs, beak, carcass, bird wings and machinery entangled and merging with each other against the monotonous black background. The images relinquished uneasiness and discomfort, but at the same time alluding into beauty with his refined realistic imagery. This contrasting elements reflecting his i teration of good and evil, the Ying and Yang, the binary opposition take on the paradox of human as it is both savoring life as well as destructive.

Natisa Jones, Bali and Amsterdam based artist, explore the experience of everydayness and how to contemplate with it as a process. Driving from her individuality, the process also informed the gap between being a person and her experience accumulated into a data or memory. In this sense, human not only a vessel, but also a subject of our own interrogation within the limit of mind. Her works draw from her everyday experience, thus the used of texts as a journalistic approach, interrogating the idea of ‘self’ within a context of identi ty and place.

All f ive artists feature in this exhibition presenting a voice of new generation, whose concern reflecting in their artwork. Southeast Asia wil l continue to develop as one of the growing population, with an economic injection of foreign investment wil l rapidly transform the region into an industrial well. In the midst of urban growth, modernization and globalization, the cultural activit ies also thrive within the community as a resisting strategy towards the consequence of development. The river wil l always flow, although the landscape keeps on changing.
