COUNT NOUNS• Countable nouns are those nouns that you

can count and have a plural form.• To indicate that a noun exists we are going

to use THERE IS ( for singular nouns ) and THERE ARE ( for plural nouns ).

There are many apples in the basket.

COUNT NOUNS• Examples:• There is a girl in the bus.• There is not a girl in the bus.• A: Is there a girl in the bus?• B: Yes, there is. / No, there isn’t.• There are flowers on the table.• There are not flowers on the table.• A: Are there flowers on the table ?• B: Yes, there are. / No, there aren’t.

UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS• Los sustantivos No Contables se

caracterizan por no tener forma plural, por lo cual siempre se van a usar con THERE IS. Tampoco podemos asumir que son singulares por lo que no podemos usar el artículo A – AN .

There is some wine in the glass.

UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS• Examples:• There is cheese on the plate.• There is not cheese on the plate. • A: Is there cheese on the plate?• B: Yes, there is. / No, there isn’t.• There is beer in the bottle.• There is not beer in the bottle.• A: Is there beer in the bottle ?• B: Yes, there is. / No, there isn’t.

HOW MUCH…?• HOW MUCH is going to be used in

Interrogative sentences with Uncountable Nouns. Look at the example:

How much milk is there ?

There isn’t any milk.

• HOW MANY is going to be used in Interrogative sentences with Plural Countable Nouns. Look at the example:

HOW MANY…?

There are many of them.

How many CD’s are

there ?

MUCH and MANY• MUCH and MANY are used in a negative

form, too.• Example:

  There's not much water in the bottle.     

  There weren't many students in the classroom.

MUCH and MANY• Much and Many are also used with too, (not)

so, and (not) as .

There were too many people at the party.  

  There's not so much work to do this week.

  It's a problem when there are so many people.

QUANTIFIERS• A FEW and A LITTLE • A few (for countable nouns) and a little (for

uncountable nouns) describe the quantity in a positive way:

Tal vez no tengo muchos amigos, pero

sí los suficientes.

I have a few friends.

I have a little money.

Tengo poco dinero, pero el suficiente para vivir.

QUANTIFIERS• FEW and LITTLE • Few and little describe quantity in a

negative way.

Casi no hubo gente en la fiesta.

Few people came to my

party.

He had little money.

Él no tiene casi nada de dinero.

• BOTH / ALL are not used in the same way. Both is used to talk about two persons, two things, etc. All is usually used to talk about three or more elements. Look at the examples:

BOTH / ALL

There are trees on both sides of the road.

There are trees on all sides

of the road.

ALL and EVERY are usually confused by students, too.All can be used before a plural count noun, and every is only used before a singular noun.

ALL / EVERY

All roads lead to Rome.

Every man has his price.

• EVERY / EACH are used in a different way, too. Each is used to mention two people, things, etc. Every is only used to mention three or more elements. Look at the examples:

EVERY / EACH

Helen was carrying two cases, one in each hand.

Each / Every star in the

sky has a name.

SOME – ANY • SOME y ANY son cuantificadores

indefinidos.• SOME se usa en oraciones afirmativas

con los sustantivos No Contables y con los Contables en su forma Plural.

• ANY se usa en oraciones Negativas e Interrogativas con los sustantivos No Contables y con los Contables en su forma Plural.

REMEMBER:• Hay cuantificadores que se usan con los sustantivos

contables y no contables.• Many se usa con sustantivos contables en plural, lo mismo

que How many.• Much se usa con los sustantivos no contables, lo mismo que

How much.• Revisa los sustantivos contables singulares y plurales
