WHAT IS VAASTU?

• Sthapatya Ved is an ancient architecture from India. It is

part of a system of knowledge called Veda.

• Vastu Sastra is the ancient Indian science of buildings

Unlike other construction sciences, which talk

mainly about material and architectural aspects,

Vastu also talks about the social and behavioral

changes one can expect to happen in their lives by

living in certain types of houses.

Vastu shastra is an ancient art and science,

containing principles and practices of constructing

buildings which ensures a harmonious balance

between man and nature and thereby bring all

round happiness, health, wealth and prosperity.

TYPES OF VASTU

There are four types of Vastu:

1) Bhoomi - deals with selection of a site/land

2) Prasada - deals with Palaces and buildings

3) Yana - Vehicles, carts and ships

4) Sayana - furniture, tools and utensils


ORIGIN OF VASTU

Shri Vishvakarma is the source

of Sthapatya Ved knowledge. He

is the origin of the entire

knowledge. The universe is

created with the very same

principles that he passed to

Rishis and Maharishis thousands

of years ago to utilize in

designing homes, cities and

countries. This very universe is

in precise order, moving with

precise time throughout many

billions of years.

Koutilya‟s „Artha Sastra‟- Vastu as a basis for constructing

Villages, Landscapes, Gardens, Bridges,Ponds and Lakes.

Varahamihira in his great work „Brihat Samhita‟ ---weather

forecasting, earthquake forecasting, rainfall, architecture,

exploration of water springs

„Manasara‟ --- great book on Vastu, discusses the principles

of architectural and sculptural construction.

„Mayamatam‟ of Maya who is said to build the great Maya

Sabha of Pandavas (of Mahabharatha times) is a rich work

with 36 chapters

1. Man‟s homes, unlike other creatures has undergone a transformation too. Starting from caves five thousand years ago it has transited through huts, tiled houses and is now in the form of skyscrapers piercing the skies.2. Homes gave protection to the inmates from the vagaries of nature. It offered protection during weak times like sleep. More so it offered a place to store the assets for the sake of harsher times. 3. Ever since the evolution imparted intelligence to life, creatures have been seeking to build homes.

Changing or correcting Vastu deficiencies and

enhancing source bioenergetics is considered,

from ancient times, to be the most important

thing you can do to ensure a happier life, good

health, relationships, success.

Thousands of years of Vastu research shows

that homes (no matter how physically attractive)

– if they have poor Vastu energetics, the

inhabitants will still be subject to unnecessary

suffering (whether in health, business, love, etc.)

Vastu scriptures advise using two ways of staying

1. The first is balancing the influences of the five

elements

2. The second is harmonizing the doshas with the

five elements.

Vastu defects in the directions causes an

The whole universe is made up of five basic

elements, the earth, water, fire, air and space. Our

body is also made up of these five basic elements

of nature.

Vastu teaches the individual to live in balance and

harmony with the panchamahabhootas.

Each of these five basic elements is energetically

associated with a particular direction.

East

It is abode of Lord Indra, the chief of the

Gods (giver of pleasures, progress and

growth).

The direction also represents the realm

of the rising Sun (Surya) projecting ultra-

violet rays important for health.


NORTH

North

The abode of Kuber, the God of wealth,

significator of abundance and all good

things.


WEST

West

The abode of Varuna, the God of ocean.

It is also the direction of the setting Sun

which gives infra-red radiation.


SOUTH

South

The abode of Yama, the God of death,

taking care of after life.


THE NORTH EAST ZONE

Called as the Eesanya and is the entry point of energy.

Needs to be very light and clean.

Ideal for puja rooms and study as well as expansive rooms such as living rooms.

Ideal for placing east and north facing doors.

Human nature; religion and educatio Controls prosperity and future of the family as it is the entry point for energy.

Avoid toilets and kitchens here, in buildings. Avoid tall trees in the garden.


NORTHWEST ZONE

Eshanya

It is said to be ruled by Lord Shiva or the God Himself. This area must always be

scrupulously clean, open and highly receptive in a welcome “mode” always.

SOUTH EAST ZONE

Called as the Agni and is the point of heat energy.

Needs to have hot equipment such as stoves.

In factories this space could have boilers or generators.

Ideal for kitchens, electrical equipment and power connections. Ideal for placing south facing doors.

Human nature; family relationship.


SOUTHEAST ZONE

(Agneya)

The habitat of fire, the storehouse of energy, vigourand strength. It is the direction

of sustenance and spirituality.

South The abode of Yama, the God of death, taking care of after life.


NORTH WEST ZONE

Called as the Vayu. It is the point of

wind energy, which indicates

communication and interaction

Ideal for kitchens, guest rooms and

toilets.

Ideal for placing west facing doors.

Human nature; social interaction and

disputes

Controls confusions, litigation. Good

place for toilets and kitchens here, in

buildings.

Avoid adult bedrooms but one may

keep children bedrooms here.

Shrubs are good here in the garden.


NORTHWEST- ZONE

(Vayavya)

The abode of Vayu devta, the God of air/wind, the invisible, but the most effective

blessing for all objects in need of motion/movement for their efficiency.

9 Centre It is the brahmasthan, the earth, energy centre, power.


SOUTH WEST ZONE

Called as the Nairu. It is the point of

heaviness, which indicates weightage

in society.

Ideal for bed rooms and cash lockers.

A very bad spot for placing south or

west facing doors.

Human nature; wealth, status and

respect

Controls safety and status. Good

place for master bedrooms in

buildings. Avoid kitchens and toilets.

Avoid water bodies .

Tall trees are good here in the garden


SOUTHWEST ZONE

(Nairitya)

The abode of Nairut (demon) and connotes purity and cleanliness. It is the direction

of the past.

West The abode of Varuna, the God of ocean. It is also the direction of the setting Sun

which gives infra-red radiation.

Centre

It is the brahmasthan, the earth, energy centre, power.

SELECTION OF LAND OR PLOT

The plot is the land on which we build the building.

It is the base for the constructed structure and would definitely influence the activities in the building.


LAND SHOULD BE FERTILE

Like the basis the soil offers a growing plant, the earth nurtures the building. We know that Vastu is dependent on earth energies and so the plot, which is the earth component of the home, is important.

Just as in agriculture the plot has to nurture lives in a home too.


LAND SHOULD BE SOLID

If the land is dug and refilled then it should overflow.

Smell of the land should be good.

It should not contain bones or polythene bags etc.


SHAPE OF THE PLOT

Vastu Sastra believes in balanced shapes. Rectangles the science feels is the best shape to have for a plot or a residence.

Since it is felt that all four corners are vital in determining the different aspects in a man‟s life, a rectangle offers a complete life for people living within.

SUN (IDA NADI ) AND MOON

The plot could be divided as two triangles, the moon triangle and the sun triangle. The moon half should always be higher than the sun half.

SURROUNDINGS

South west should be high and heavy

North east should be light and empty

No trees in front of gate

No shadow of trees, temples, high rise buildings on the house

No sandwich between two big houses


SLOPE OF LAND

South west must be highest

North east must be lowest

If south west is low, all earnings go into the drain

The land should slope from the southwest corner (highest) to wards the north eastern corner (lowest) with all other parts having levels proportional to their distance from these two corners.
