– Don’t smoke: Smoking yellow the skin, dries it out, and greatly increases wrinkling, especially around the mouth

– Use Sunscreen: Use SPF 30 or 50– Drink enough water according to Vata, Pitta, or Kapha

Page 23: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Complaints of dry skin are more common after age 50 due to vata dosha (autumn of life).

– After 50 some oil glands in the skin stop producing the oil needed for lubrication

– Winter itch: in low-humidity areas such as the desert Southwest, and during the winter months elsewhere, water evaporates from the skin very quickly.

Page 24: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Over washing: We are a nation of clean freaks. We routinely wash away the oil layer that normally acts like plastic wrap, sealing in the moisture.

– Decrease soap use: No soap except where needed, use vata, pitta, or kapha dusting powder instead (if needed)

– Bathe, don’t shower: A shower equals infinite number of rinsings. Sloshing around in the tub removes less oil

– Don’t use bath oil: Most goes down the drain. The residue makes the tub slippery, encouraging a fall. Instead apply herbal oil to entire body BEFORE bathing.

Page 25: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Daily oleation: Apply oil every day to the body before shower or bath

– Sesame oil for vata and kapha– Mixed sunflower and sesame oil for pitta– Use tepid water: Just as hot water flushes grease from

dirty dishes, it flushes protective oils from your skin– Choose a mild soap: A major causes of dry skin is daily

use of soap. Consider using highly diluted Dr. Bronner’s Liquid Soap only where and when needed. Or use BanyanBotanicals.com’s Vata, Pitta or Kapha Herbal Dusting Powder made with Chick Pea Flower base.

average physician practices acupuncture before the disease has come to its

Page 28: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Avabhashani = Rasa (Plasma)– Lohita = Rakta (Blood)– Mamsa = Mamsa (Muscle)– Sweta = Meda (Fat)– Asthini = Asthi (Osseous – Bone)– Vedini = Majja (Nervous System)– Shukrini = Shukra / Artava (Reproductive Tissue)

Page 29: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Top layer is Avabhashani: Every third day this layer disappears and you get new skin

– Every third day your face looks different because topmost layer has changed

– Second layer = Lohita = Rakta: If you move superficial layer, blood appears

– Mamsa is third layer: Maintains tone of the skin

Page 30: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Lohita contains Ranjaka Pitta, which maintains skin color

– Avabhashani contains Rasa Dhatu– Third layer maintains texture and tone of skin– If tone of skin is lost, skin becomes loose and wrinkled– Sweta contains sebaceous glands, which maintains

oleation of skin

Page 31: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Asthini = layer of skin at root of hair connected to Asthi Dhatu

– Hair, nails, teeth– Around root of hair are fine nerve endings, related to

Majja Dhatu as nerve tissue = Vedini– Shukrini = superfine layer related to Shukradharakala

and Artavadharakala– All over body

Page 32: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Skin = Tvag

– Skin is a membranous structure made of membranous tissue

– Ectoderm = outer layer– Endoderm = inner layer– Mesoderm = middle layer

Page 33: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Without skin there is no knowledge– Skin is continuation of inner organs– Mucous membrane is also superfine skin– Scrotal skin is a highly specialized skin– Skin of palm and skin of bottom of foot thickened

Page 34: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Skin of retina perceives light– Eardrum is specialized skin, perceives sound– Skin of tongue perceives taste– Nasal skin perceives smell– Skin of rest of body perceives touch– All doors of perception have specialized skin

Page 35: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Skin is absent only on tip of nails and ends of hair– Skin is present only at root of hair– No pain if hair is cut and same with nails– Skin is the cream of Rasa Dhatu– These seven layers are connected functionally to the

seven dhatus– When the skin is massaged, you are sending message to

the dhatus

Page 36: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Skin of forehead and skin of upper eyelid is semi-transparent

– Retina is highly developed skin which reacts to light– TK is a skin within the neuron– Myelin sheath is a skin– When myelin sheath is destroyed, it affects the nervous

system and the person gets MS

Page 37: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Skin of lips, nipples and clitoris are connected with sex– Never kiss someone’s lips– Kissing forehead shows fatherly love– Friend can kiss cheeks– Skin of forehead directly connected to crown chakra– Touch on third eye opens crown chakra

Page 38: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Inversion of tongue with tip touching soft palate, stimulates secretion of soma

– That is the secret of Tantra– Vedic culture has studied the skin more in depth than

modern dermatologist– Skin can bring enlightenment

Page 39: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Skin of earlobe also connected to crown chakra– Skin is directly connected to the internal organs and

pain in internal organs can be expressed through the skin

– Skin protects the body and regulates body temperature– It gives glow, beauty and luster– Skin absorbs sunlight and entire spectrum of colors =

chromotherapy

Page 40: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Because of skin on soles of feet, we know we are on the ground

– TK = myelin sheath of neuron– Skin passes electric current– Skin is sensitive to radiation

Page 41: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Skin is directly connected to– Prana Vata– Vyana Vata– Udana Vata– Sprinkling cold water on face increases

Udana Vayu = upward movement– Samana Vata– Apana Vata

Page 42: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Most important Pitta related to skin is Bhrajaka Pitta

– Ranjaka Pitta

– Alochaka Pitta = skin of eye

– Bhrajaka Agni = skin regulates body temperature through Bhrajaka Agni

– Also makes skin lustrous

– Special skin under arms, pubis, and mustache = secondary sexual

– Bhrajaka Agni absorbs through skin those substances or sun or moon rays that hit skin

Page 43: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Skin is the organ of touch = touch, pain, temperature, stereognosis

– Through Brajaka Agni, skin has three dimensional perception

– Psychologically, the skin is directly connected to the emotions

– That is why Reiki and Polarity work– Touching the outer layer of the mind

Page 44: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Skin is sensitive to the aging process– Wrinkling is maturation– Don’t do face-lifting, disturbs the anatomy and

physiology of the skin– Skin is sensitivity to gravitation, and aging pull skin

down– Inverted yoga asanas will help reverse pull of gravity

Page 45: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– All skin diseases begin in GIT– All doshas move throughout body and through Rasa

Dhatu they some to the skin– Skin diseases may be tridoshic, but skin very sensitive

to Pitta– Skin is sensitive to solar radiation and to diet

Page 46: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– According to Madhava, all skin diseases are called Kustha

– Kustha = chronic, acute or subacute skin disorders– Kustha = fermentation, putrefaction– Fermented food bad for skin disease– In skin disease, local area of skin is “fermented”

Page 47: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Etiological factors– 1. Virudha Ahar = incompatible food combining– Yeast, sugar, pickles bad for skin– Molasses, cafeine, salt– Heavy meats, cheese, which is fermented– use only fresh cheeses– 2. Suppressed vomiting

Page 48: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– 3. Overexercise under hot sun = bad for skin condition– 4. Anger = Makes skin hot and flushy– 5. Prolonged fasting = drives Pitta into the skin– 6. Overeating– 7. Chronic indigestion– Because of these causes, ama is produced, creating

arena for bacteria to grow– Root cause is that body becomes disturbed by above

causes

Page 49: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– 8. Intense fear– 9. Alternate hot and cold affects skin. Skin doesn’t

know whether to sweat or not.– 10. Alcohol– 11. Yogurt at night– 12. Synthetic soaps– 13. Synthetic fibers = create electricity on skin,

creating hives and rash

Page 50: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– 14. Curse given by guru– 15. Staying in dry place– 16. Eating meat treated with steroids, hormones– 17. Exposure to new rugs containing formaldehyde,

which is highly Pittagenic– 18. Worries and anxiety = Stress

Affects Ojas of skin– 19. Lack of hygiene

Not taking shower is most unclean

Page 51: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– 1. Skin looks too soft = K– 2. Too dry, rough = V– 3. Over-sweating = P– 4. No sweating = V– 5. Discoloration = P– 6. Burning, itching, loss of sensation = PV– 7. Goosebumps = Roma harsha = V– 8. Swelling

Page 52: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Constant sweating of hands or feet can create fungal infection

– Genetic factor also enters– Allergy is doshic sensitivity and is also a factor

Page 53: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

Pama = Dermatitis or Eczema

– Red discoloration– Itching, pruritus– Dry, rough– Nylon socks can create itching, dryness or

inflammation– Chronic constipation– Pama can happen anywhere = lower legs, calf– But especially skin of elbow, knee, ankles

Page 54: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

Pama = Dermatitis or Eczema

– In the beginning there is Vata, dryness, which leads to itching

– Then Pitta comes and creates redness– This may become weeping because of Kapha– Because of Vata, it is dry eczema– Because of Pitta, it is red eczema– Vata will create blackish, brownish discoloration

Page 55: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

Vata Pama = Dermatitis or Eczema

– Skin becomes dry, rough, blackish, brownish discoloration

– Called dry eczema– Person is anxious, has hemorrhoids, constipation– Goes with arthritis, osteo or RA– Samprapti associated with Asthi Dhatu

Page 56: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

Pitta Pama = Dermatitis or Eczema

– Angry eczema– Skin is red, hot, flushed– More burning– Skin becomes sensitive– Person is angry, judgmental– Common with yeast infection, giardiasis, fungal

growth, candida– Samprapti associated with Rakta Dhatu

Page 57: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

Dandruff, Eczema, Psoriasis

– Some individuals will have mixed symptoms– One eczema goes only to superficial layer = Dandruff =

Vicharchika– Dosha is just in the Rasa Dhatu– Many people get dandruff before eczema– Extreme dry skull– Topmost layer of skin is affected by Vata Dosha– Psoriasis has a clean line of demarcation, raised, red, clear– In eczema the edges are merged

Page 66: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

Dandruff = Vicharchika

– For dandruff use Tikta Ghrita– Apply to skull at bedtime– Shampoo AM

Page 67: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

Dandruff = Vicharchika

– Also for dandruff– Take egg white of 3 eggs– Add lime juice 1 ounce– Mix and apply to skull– Leave for half an hour and then shampoo– This mixture removes dosha from top layer of skin– Repeat until condition is gone

Page 68: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

Page 118: Ayurvedic Distance Learning

– Tikta and Neem are bitter, and the elements of bitter are Space and Air.

– The bitter qualities are carried into the deep capillaries, where ama is lodging and creating irritation and papules. Those toxins create repeated attacks of itching and burning sensation.

– First, that ama should be removed by internal and external oleation.

– If the liver is enlarged, internal oleation may not be tolerated. However, Dr. Lad has found that Tikta Ghrita in moderation is tolerated and will help to detox.
