Ashwagandha

This herb known as winter cherry in English is found mostly in regions of temperate climate. The root of this herb is used for medicinal purposes. This herb is known to pacify the vata dosha. In ayurvedic texts it is mentioned to be as rasayana for vata dosha and hence indicated to be taken regularly by vata prakruti persons. It is also indicated in various disorders like stress, loss of sleep, paralysis, loss of sexual drive, impotence and other such. Oil prepared from this herb is used for basti therapy in vata disorders.

Bala

The meaning of word bala in Sanskrit is strength and this herb is named so, for giving strength to the body. It is a shrub and is commonly found in tropical and sub-tropical plains of India. The root of this herb is used for medicinal purposes. It pacifies the vata dosha . Oil prepared from this herb can be used for the snehan (massage) therapy in disorders of vata. It is mainly indicated in various joint and nervous disorders like arthritis, sciatica, frozen shoulder, paralysis etc.

Kantakari

This herb commonly appears as a thorny herb spread along the roadside all over India. This herb has the capacity to pacify the vata dosha. This herb is an important component of Dashamoola which is the combination of 10 vata pacifying herbs. Kantakari is mainly used for complaints of throat like cough, tonsillitis etc. It also has some anti helmintic properties. The fumes of this herb are inhaled orally for dental caries, dental pain etc.

Bilva

It is found throughout the South East Asia and grows commonly in tropical forests. This herb has got religious importance in India. This herb is one among the 10 herbs used in the formulation of vata pacifying formulation called as dashamoola. It is indicated in various vata disorders like paralysis, Parkinson’s disease, joint pain etc. It is also beneficial for various gastric disorders like constipation, piles, dysentery, abdominal pain etc.

Rasona

This herb is commonly called as garlic as is widely used as a kitchen spice all over the world. It is used for pacification of vata dosha. Rasona has been reported to have certain hypolipidemic properties helping to reduce the blood cholesterol levels and hence is used widely in cardiac disorders. A drink called Rasona Kshirapaka prepared with rasona and milk is advised to be taken daily for persons having vatic disorders like joint pain, sciatica, lumbar spondilitis, and other such.

Masha

Masha is commonly known as black gram or black lentil in English and is found in South Asian countries. It is used for pacification of vata dosha. The oil processed with this herb is used extensively for snehana (massage) therapy. It is used in vata disorders like joint pain, inflammation, paralysis etc. It is known to increase the sperm count and is indicated in erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation. It also increases milk secretion in lactating mothers.

Methika

This herb is commonly used as a vegetable source in India. Commonly known as fenugreek in English it is widely cultivated in India. It is used for pacification of vata dosha. It is used in conditions like loss of appetite, flatulence, abdominal pain etc. The seeds of this herb are extremely bitter in taste are use for augmentation of breast milk in feeding mothers. Methika seeds are indicated in lowering the blood sugar and cholesterol levels as well.
