Shaikh Zayed Hospital is a 750 bedded tertiary care hospital attached to the Federal Postgraduate Medical Institute. The Department of Dentistry, a component of the Department of Oral Health Sciences, has 12 dental surgeons covering all aspects of Dentistry. It has an average turn-over of more than 12,000 new patients per annum; over 15,000 dental procedures are performed in this department per year.

PROFESSOR AYYAZ ALI KHAN (BDS; MSc; PhD)

I became a dentist with an aim to make a difference in the life of people around me. I firmly

believe that Dental Public Health hold the key to the future of Dentistry. With the age of

‘drill and fill’ slowly going out of fashion, we not need to look further afield to improve the

health of our people by understanding profiles of the communities we serve.

During my many field trips, I cannot help observing the magnitude of health problems

accompanying a growing population. I see the helplessness of a large majority of the

population, who, with education and greater media exposure have greater expectations from

health care delivery systems. I noticed how lifestyle transformation is changing the burden

of disease and how non-availability of solutions to these health problems is always blamed

to increasing resource constrains. I see the lack of coordination among the health care

professionals; who, despite their sincerity to the cause are unable to take up the challenges

that stare them in their eyes because with accelerating globalization there are greater

expectations from them.

These challenges fascinate me as I also see that majority of these issues can be managed

with innovative approaches in healthcare management system; appropriate policies drifting

from the traditional approach can yield results. I realize that I do not have to reinvent the

wheel and taking advantage of the accelerating globalization we can benefit from the

experience of experts in the field to make a difference.

Most of us acknowledge the necessity to bring together the best and most critical thinking

about how to educate and equip oral health professionals to serve their populations with the

very best and most effective oral health care.

Having received my advance training from UK and Ireland; having worked in Africa,

Middle East and Pakistan; sitting of over a hundred publications and more than two dozen

field projects gives me a unique exposure to be able to understand the desperations and

limitations of professionals working in developing countries; and the opportunities that exist

to solve the problem. I believe my inclusion in the Public Health Committee will be a

positive addition to the team of public health experts striving to make the difference.
