Open - minded is one of the attributes of the Learner Profile and one of our core values at Al Zahra College. What is an open-minded person? They understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives,
values and traditions of other individuals and communities.
They are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view, and are willing to grow from the experience.
Weekly awards are presented to students to demonstrate Learner Profile attributes.

STATE X COUNTRYCongratulations to Hassan Makki who also competed at the recent NSW Independent Schools Cross Country Championships at Eastern Creek. Originally, Hassan was first reserve for the 8/9 Years Boys division. However, with one ASISSA competitor failing to show up, Hassan seized the opportunity to compete at a state level.
Older sister, Rayanne, also competed at these championships.
AZC BLAZERSStudents must wear college blazers to and from AZC in Terms 2 and 3.
READY TO LEARNIt is absolutely essential that
students arrive at school, ready to learn. This won’t happen if students do not have adequate sleep (10-12 hours, depending on age) or have unhealthy eating habits.
If parents don’t have these two factors right, then learning and personal achievement will be a ‘hit or miss’ affair.
PaymentsParents are reminded that all payments should be made by direct deposit, Bpay or through the EFTPOS facility at AZC.
The reason for this procedure is twofold:
- AZC does not want to handle or hold cash on the premises; and
- AZC wants to minimise any bank charges for parents who are withdrawing cash from ATMs to make a fees payment.
AZC appreciates your cooperation in this matter.

FRIDAY LUNCH CLUB
Not everyone likes a busy playground. Some prefer solitude. Sometimes, friendship issues need to be resolved. Taking action, Amenah Hamdy, AZC Welfare Minister in 2001, established a
Friday lunch club. Students are invited to attend and participate in a range of interesting activities, as well as meeting the individual needs of students. The Friday Lunch Club is a popular activity and possibly the best initiative implemented by an AZC student. A
report on this project will appear in the July edition of IB Matters.
Well done, Amenah.
COLLEGE UNIFORMParents are reminded that they must purchase available uniform items from AZC and missing/out-of-stock items from Yeronga School Uniforms (900 Canterbury Rd, Roselands).
There is concern that some families are substituting College uniform items by purchasing items from unapproved suppliers. Specific concerns are boys’ trousers, school shirts, AZC caps and tracksuit pants.
Parents can save themselves a lot of money by ensuring their child’s name is marked clearly on all pieces of clothing.
NUT FREE ZONE
Mohamed Soummaka, who is in Kindergarten in 2011, has a severe nut allergy. To prevent a medical emergency, there can be no nuts or foods containing nuts in the school.
This includes, especially Nutella and hazelnut prod-ucts, and anything containing tree nuts.
Al Zahra College and the Soummaka family appreciate your assistance in making our College a nut free zone.
Thank you in advance for your complete support.

Unit 3 Central Idea
A variety of signs and symbols facilitate local and global com-munication.
What lines of inquiry will de-fine the scope of the inquiry into the central idea?
• Signs and symbols
• Reasons for the develop-ment of communication systems
• Specialised systems of communication
As part of the Transdisciplinary Theme “How We Express Ourselves”, Year 3 did some “designing and making”. Each student designed a system of communication, wrote a pro-cedure on how to make it and then made it using recycled materials. The last step was to reflect and write any modifica-tions they had made to their original design. Some of the work is in the “Inquiry Centre”.

FUTSAL SEASON
Term 2 was futsal season for Al Zahra College.
Assuming that 2011 would be no different to the last two years, ASISSA West determined that it was better if an indoor sport was played in Term 2, instead of having the prospect of games being cancelled due to wet weather. It was a great decision!
The AZC girls played the rounds with only a loss to Arkana who had some talented futsal players and dominated the girls’ competition. AZC and Arkana played off in the final. AZC lost the final 2-0. However, the final saw the girls play their best game of the season and were worthy runners up.
The AZC boys dominated their competition, although Rissalah and Arkana provided very stiff competition. In fact, AZC was surprised that they
played Iqra in the final, instead of long-term rival Rissalah.
The regional futsal championships were held at the end of May with our U10 Boys team reaching the semi finals.
Well done, all players!
