Solid Waste in Azerbaijan 1 According to the World Bank estimates, the total amount of waste generated in 2010 is estimated at over 1.8 million tons with the Greater Baku region accounting for about 1.1 million tons of this total.

generate around 1.4 million tons of waste per year, while rural dwellers in Azerbaijan produce waste of around 0.46 million tons.

• Environmental awareness of population is low and only sporadic efforts are made to involve the public in improving waste collection and separation of recyclables.

• According to the World Bank, the actual costs for waste collection and disposal services in Azerbaijan are currently unknown, but Government transfers diverted to waste management services are estimated at roughly AZN 26 million per year.

small to Medium informal scrap dealers, mostly represented by scrap metals and scrap plastics. Most of them are in direct contact with Medium and large-size industrial and commercial entities and partially collect the recyclables directly from manufactures and shops. No active composting plants exist in Azerbaijan.
