Palace of Shirvanshahs
(15th century)
The two-story building of the
palace consists of about fifty
different rooms of various sizes
and shapes connected by three narrow
spiral staircases. Of the 25 rooms
on the second floor only 16
have survived
Seyid Yahya Bakuvi's Mausoleum is situated in the southern part of the complex. Seyid Yahya Bakuvi was a royal scholar in the court of Shirvanshah Khalilullah.
The Shirvanshah palace complex is one of the most beautiful architectural monuments of Azerbaijan. The slender portal, which served as the main entrance to the Turbe is decorated with stalactite semi-dome richly ornamented and inscribed. This portal is considered the most beautiful not only among the monuments of Baku but also among similar monuments of Iran and Asia Minor
In 1964 the complex was declared a museum and taken under state protection. Since then this unique monument of Azerbaijani architecture is one of the most popular tourist sites
The Palace Mosque (1430s) is situated in the lower court of the complex. There are 2 chapels for prayers in the mosque: a hall of a large size for men and a hall of a small size for women, also a couple of small subsidiary rooms.
The Palace Bath-house is situated on the lowest terrace of the complex. It was discovered in 1939 and dates to 17th
century. The archaeological
excavations exposed a big bath-house consisting of 26
rooms.
