1. IntroductionThe technical information related to the Tempus III series has been designed to

inform you about its technical characteristics, its operation principle, the elements that comprise a timer, the models that currently make up the series and its many practical uses.

1.1. What is a Tempus III

1.2. Where can you use a Tempus III

A Tempus III is an electronic apparatus that sells time and impulses. The practical applications of a Tempus III are the on/off control of different apparatus such as: control of televisions and carwashes in time sale mode and photocopiers in impulse sale mode.

The Tempus III controls the external mechanisms that it regulates by activating and deactivating relays, which will operate in one way or another depending on the configuration and programming of the apparatus. These can respond both to internal signals (credits, clock period, etc.) and to external signals (consumption, activation, input, etc.) so it has countless applications.

The Tempus III timers have the following features:

Great programming versatility, providing infinite uses.

Admission of any type of coins of legal tender. Use the selector AZKOYEN NN6.

Display showing the time, number of services or credits available.

Accounting of the amount in pesetas that the apparatus has received (without resetting)

Consumption detector (adjustable) in output making it possible to stop the time when there is no charge.

There are many and varied applications for the Tempus III timers. Below we point out the most representative:

2. Physical and technical characteristics

2.1. Electrical characteristics

In this section the elements that comprise the Tempus III are studied in detail, as well as how they are connected and their electrical specifications, the construction materials, programming, operating modes and the different models that form part of the series.

Supply voltage 220Vac ± 10% 50 Hz.

Maximum primary intensity 50 mA.

Maximum intensity controllable by the relay contacts 6 A (protected by fuse).

2.2.1. Electrical specifications of the NN6 selector

The supply voltage required for the NN6 selector to operate correctly is 12 Vdc, which is supplied through pins 1 and 2 of connector Jp3:

The NN6 selector model is responsible for identifying the coins inserted into the Tempus III. It is able to admit 15 different coin models.

2.2.2. Connection

In order for the selector to work correctly the operating mode selection microswitches must be in the proper position and the connector that communicates it with the control card + power supply must be correctly connected:

As described above the selector admits all coins of legal tender and has the capacity to validate up to 15 different types. It can be used for coins of any country after this has been factory-programmed. The dimensions of the possible coins admitted by the selector must be between the margins specified in the following table:

2.2.4. Operating conditions

To achieve optimum operation of the apparatus a series of basic requirements must be satisfied with respect to where the Tempus III is installed and how it is fitted. These are the following:

Inclination margin: 3º in all the axes.

Temperature margin: Operation: +5 to + 55ºC.Storage: -25 to +70ºC

Humidity margin: Maximum 95% (Relative humidity without condensation).

2.2.5. Component operation and description

The selector operates by measuring a series of typical parameters of each coin, which will determine whether it is admitted or rejected. The diameter of the coin is measured by means of two photodiodes and two phototransistors and the electrical conductivity and magnetic field permeability are determined using two coils with ferrite cores (which are very sensitive to magnetic variations).

Once all the parameters have been obtained, these are compared with the ones that have been programmed earlier in the selector microprocessor memory during one of the manufacturing phases. This programming is carried out using a set of coins of legal tender that include all the existing models in circulation. Thus the selector will determine the validity or nullity of the coin inserted and will direct it towards the coin bin or towards the return box.

The main elements that comprise the NN6 selector and which are essential for its operation are described below:

The aim of the terminal strip and the input rocker is to dampen the free fall of the coin, slowing down its entry, thus preventing it from entering the selector in an irregular fashion, bouncing, and achieving a suitable uniform and rotation movement on the plastic bar situated next to the terminal strip.

The lower rocker is fitted to stabilise the coin speed coming out of the selector, slowing it down and getting it to come out in the most adequate fashion.

Two photodiodes are located in the hinge, which are perfectly aligned with the two phototransistors placed in the housing. The photodiodes emit an infrared light beam, which the phototransistors receive. When the coin enters the selector it crosses and cuts the infrared light beam. Depending on how long it takes for the coin to cut both light beams, the selector is able to determine the diameter of the coin in question.

The selector has two face-to-face coils with ferrite core. One is installed in the hinge and the other in the housing. These ferrite cores create a magnetic field, which, when crossed by a coin, causes variations in the frequency, permitting the selector to measure the electrical conductivity and magnetic field permeability.

The function of the anti-return system is to prevent the coin from re-entering the selector once it has been admitted. This system prevents frauds produced by attaching a thread to the coin.

This element is used to direct the coins to the right outlet. It is comprised of a coil, which is activated when the coins are admitted, freeing the outlet towards the coin bin and which remains inactive when it rejects them so that they come out towards the recovery box.

The valid coins that have come out correctly, cut the infrared light beam established between the photodiode and the phototransistor located on the lower part of the selector, in the outlet area for admitted coins. This is exactly when the selector determines the authenticity of the coin.

2.2.6. Placing the selector NN6 in Tempus III

The NN6 selector is secured to the Tempus III through its side pivots. Two of these pivots fit perfectly into the holes of the metal housing, and in order to totally secure the selector, a third pivot is anchored in the retainer (flexible to facilitate later removal).

2.2.7. Cleaning and maintenance of the NN6 selector

The only maintenance that the NN6 selector requires depends on how soiled the coins are, as this can obstruct its optical elements.

If the coins have to be inserted several times before being accepted this is an unmistakable sign that the selector has accumulated dirt on its photodiodes or phototransistors and has to be cleaned.

The cleaning must be done with 96º ethyl alcohol. Products containing benzene hydrocarbons must not be used, as they would produce a rapid degradation of the plastic, which in turn would cause irreparable damage to the selector.

Before cleaning, the two parts of the selector, housing and hinge, must be separated it. Then, using a brush (fine vegetable fibre bristles, never metal ones) impregnated in alcohol, clean the areas where the photodiodes and phototransistors are located, in order to completely clean the holes where these are located.

After the cleaning process, in order for the selector to operate correctly, it must be left to dry at room temperature for twelve hours (a household dryer can also be used for 10 minutes).

2.3. Control card + power supplyThe control card + power supply is responsible for receiving and transmitting data

from the external device to the selector and vice-versa. It includes the power supply (transformer, rectifier, stabiliser and filter), which is used to supply the selector, the display card and clock card (an accessory used for applications where a clock in real time is required). It has several connectors for its relative connection. The control relays of the outlet device and the accounting and programming control pushbuttons are installed in it, as well as the fuses necessary to protect all the elements of the Tempus III.

To achieve absolute control of the electric charge this card has been provided with an adjustable consumption sensor, which enables the time discount to be stopped if the outside electrical charge has been stopped or disconnected.

The card is secured to the cabinet with four plastic supports, type RICHCO LCBS-8N, which keep it perfectly secure.

For greater security the control card + power supply includes the protection housing.

2.3.1. Cont. and Test Pushbuttons

2.3.2. Output relays

The Cont. and Test pushbuttons are used to view the accounting on the display and to access the apparatus programming. They can be used to select the functions within the programming menu and to enter them to modify them or validate them.

The K1 relay is used to control the charge as with its contacts it connects and disconnects the supply voltage to the connector pins (to the charge) and it is able to control up to 6A. A consumption sensor has been installed on this relay, which enables a pause to be made in the time discount when it detects that there is no consumption in the outlet. It has a 6A protection fuse.

2.3.3. Consumption sensor

2.3.4. JP1 Connector

The consumption sensor is used to stop the time discount when the system detects that the charge is not in operation. It operates with the charge connected to the K1 relay and it can be adjusted by means of a potentiometer.

In order for the consumption sensor to operate it must be enabled by programming.

If, once the consumption sensor has been enabled, the charge apparatus does not work correctly; it will have to be adjusted. To do this, it must be taken into account that the luminous indicator (Led diode) of the control card + power supply must stay off when the charge is not activated and must light up when this is connected. If it does not do so, the consumption sensor must be adjusted with potent iometer R16 (us ing a f i ne f l a t screwdriver) until the luminous indicator behaves as described.

The display card is connected to the 4-way connector JP2 with the timer display bundle. If the apparatus requires the clock card in order to operate, the latter must be coupled to JP2 so the timer display bundle of the display card must be connected to the clock card (to the only connector that this card has). See accessory section.

JP3 is used in special applications where an outside input of the device controlled (charge) must be used. It is also used to access different programming menus.

2.3.7. JP4 ConnectorThe main input (pins 7 and 8) and the charge output (pins 5 and 6) must be

connected to connector, JP4. The outlet for a possible input from the charge apparatus and the contacts of relay K2 (for special uses) is also located.

When K1 relay is activated pin 5 connects to pin 7 so the power outlet for the outside apparatus (charge) must be taken from pins 5 and 6 of connector JP4.

There is no potential in pins 1 and 2 and when K2 relay is activated, it short-circuits these pins.

The circuit of each relay contains a 6A protection fuse in series.

Two models of control card + power supply can be installed. The only difference is that one model has special protection against water and humidity, which we called tropicalised, and the other being non- tropicalised depending on the model or application of the apparatus.

2.4. Display cardThe d isp lay ca rd has f ou r 7 -

segment BCD displays, which are the four digits. 00.00 is displayed on them when the outside charge is not in operation. When coins are inserted in the Tempus III the time, number of services or remaining credit for the end of the service are shown.

The display card has a connector used to join it to the control card + power supply by means of the t imer display bundle.

The display card is secured inside the metal housing of the Tempus III with two screws and to correctly view the displays, the display glass is fitted into the cabinet.

There are two models of display card, the only difference being that one has protection against water and humidity. So, there is a tropicalised one and a non-tropicalised one depending on the model and application.

To secure the metal housing to the cabinet the so-called front plate has been designed, which acting as a trim, and with the Azkoyen symbol engraved on it, is coupled from the outside with four screws, fastening the support or metal housing to it.

The Tempus III has two different types of coin bins, the long coin bin subunit used for models with long cabinet and which has the capacity to house up to 600 100-peseta coins, and the coin bin subunit used for models with short cabinet and which can store 200 100-peseta coins at the most.

The locking system is based on a STS 625.008 lock, which, when turned, moves a washer that is fixed to two rods, one of which moves upwards and the other downwards fitting into their relative places. Thus the door is perfectly anchored to the cabinet making the Tempus III extremely secure against possible attempts of theft.

2.8. Coin entry and recovery system The coin entry system is comprised of the upper

frame and the recovery pushbutton (called entry coin-guide), which are visible from the outside. The Tempus III has another coin-guide on the inside, which connects the recovery pushbutton with the selector coin entry.

The recovery system is based on a mechanical movement. When the recovery pushbutton (entry coin-guide) is activated it applies a rocker, which in turn moves the selector recovery lever and causes the hinge to open. Thus the coin comes out and falls into the recovery box.

3. Programming: Accounting and operating modes

The different operating modes of the Tempus III are studied in detail in this chapter, as well as the programming and practical applications depending on the operating mode configured. The way to access the accounting of the apparatus is explained.

3.1. AccountingThe accounting of the Tempus III is viewed quickly and simply by activating the

CONT pushbutton, located on the control card + power supply. Once depressed, the display will show the amount taken divided by one hundred:

Accounting on display = Takings 100

So, in order to know how much has been taken, the figure shown on the display must be multiplied by 100. The amount obtained will be the total accounting of the apparatus. For example:

3.3. Timer operating mode A

3.3.1. Description and general characteristics

The timer operating mode A comprises the sale of a time

period of between 1 minute and 100 hours (99 hours and 59 minutes).

This operating mode of the Tempus III is used for applications where the services require times of several minutes or even hours. Therefore, the Tempus III must be programmed with the value of the price/hour of the service and it will be responsible for supplying the time corresponding to the credit inserted, providing this is the same as or greater than the minimum coin insertion (which is a programmable amount).

When the credit reaches the minimum coin insertion value programmed, the timer activates relays K1 and K2 simultaneously and they stay activated until the time granted has been totally discounted.

The main characteristics, which indicate the functionality of this working mode, are:

Unitary inhibition of all the coins, programmable by the user.

Direct viewing of the accounting.

Programming the luminous intensity of the display.

Possibility of programming two different price tariffs, which can be changed depending on the time or through an outside input. Display of the time remaining, making the discount every minute with the last minute blinking on and off.

Possibility of erasing the accumulated time.

Programming time for tests without this affecting the accounting.

Possibility of detaining the time discount if the outside apparatus is not operating (except in 24 and 48 hour modes).

Programming the minimum credit insertion required for the first time period granted.

The Tempus III also has two activation confirmation possibilities for the outside apparatus:

3.3.2.4. Direct activation of the relays:

For those applications where it may be useful, the Tempus III has a direct relay activation input through connector JP3, which will become effective when the two terminals of JP3 are short-c i rcui ted and there is no accumulated time. If this input is activated (short-circuited) when the Tempus III is offering a service (it has accumulated time), the time discount will stop.

3.3.2.5. Tariff changes and use of tariff 2:

Tariff 2 can have many uses depending on the application of the Tempus III. The most normal use is to change the tariff depending on the time (carrying out two different timetables or creating the usual "happy hour"). To do this there is an accessory called clock card, which provides the Tempus III with the real time and permits the user to program a time interval each day, which can be used either to offer a free daily service or to use the second tariff (for further information about the clock card see accessories section).

The tariff change can also be carried out by using an outside input, which will short-circuit pins 2 and 3 of connector JP5 of the control card + power supply

When tariff 1 is changed to tariff 2, or the other way round, and the apparatus is carrying out a service, this service will be affected by more or less time depending on the sales prices of tariffs 1 and 2.

3.3.2.6. Operation in 24 and 48 hour mode:

The Tempus III has two special operating modes, which consist of 24 or 48 hour sale.

The 24 or 48 hour operating mode can be programmed by the user, so that when the credit inserted it is sufficient to activate either of the two modes, the Tempus III will grant 24 or 48 hours' operation (depending on the credit) with uninterrupted time discount regardless of whether the outside apparatus is operating or not. With only two exceptions:

If the JP3 input is activated. (Stoppage of outside discount).

If it is on free clock period. (Stoppage due to free service).

The margin of time between when the coin is inserted and when the time discount starts is 15 seconds. Thus the credit necessary to grant 24 or 48 hours can be reached, without the time discount starting during the coin insertion interval.

If the 24 or 48 hours are granted and more credit is inserted, the time granted under normal tariff will be discounted after the period of 24 or 48 hours.

3.3.2.7. Maximum time that can be supplied:

When the apparatus shows the maximum time: 99.59 hours, on the display, it will not take any more coins, and these will be rejected by the selector and sent to the recovery box.

3.3.2.8. Minimum coin insertion:

A minimum credit insertion can be programmed on the Tempus III for the first period

of time granted, so that until that credit is reached, the display will show 00.00 and will not activate the output relays.

3.3.3. Programming

The general programming menu in timer mode A is comprised of 17 functions, three of which have direct access through the TEST button, these being the ones that configure the so-called personal menu.

The operation mode within the programming is very simple as can be seen from the following indications:

All the functions that comprise the general programming menu are described below. The first three functions, with direct access, are the ones that make up the personal menu. The rest are hidden functions of the general menu. The way to access and go from one menu to another is also explained:

Personal menu:

Used by the collectors, it is comprised only of the three functions from the general menu, which can be accessed directly. These functions are the basic ones to be able to carry out operating tests and do not affect important parameters such as times and prices of the services.

Access by depressing TEST until the message appears on the display with maximum luminous intensity. When this pushbutton is released the first function of the personal menu will blink on and off:

Time erasure

This function enables the time that the Tempus III contains to be erased at any time and is mainly used to erase the time used for tests. By depressing the CONT button the display changes to / and this option can be rejected by depressing CONT again. By depressing TEST, the order indicated on the display at that time is executed.

This selects the element that the Tempus III will use to confirm the activation of the outside apparatus. This option is very useful to stop the time discount in the event that it detects that the charge is not operating.

If / is programmed, an outside input (pins 3 and 4 of connector JP4) is used, and if, by depressing CONT / is programmed, the timer will use the adjustable consumption sensor of the control card + power supply.

The luminous intensity or brightness of the display is adjusted so that it is appropriate for the work surroundings. There are five different levels of luminous intensity and they can be changed by depressing CONT. The programmed intensity will only be active in working status as both during accounting reading and programming the maximum luminous intensity is used.

The functions described below will only appear on the general menu when the clock card is connected. If this card is not connected when validating function 12 Tempus III will exit the programming menu.

This is used to enable the clock card, if / is validated, the Tempus III will not heed the clock card data and if TEST is depressed it will exit the programming menu. If, on the contrary CONT is depressed and / i s programmed, when this option is validated depressing TEST the TEMPUS III will take into account the real time and the functions related to the clock card may be accessed. The timer operating mode B comprises the sale of a time

period of between 1 second and 9999 seconds.

This operating mode of the Tempus III is used for applications which require greater precision and where the services are measured in seconds. Therefore, the Tempus III must be programmed with the values and time of the service and it will be responsible for supplying the time corresponding to the credit inserted, providing this is the same as or greater than the price of a service. When the credit reaches this value, the timer activates relay K1 and it will stay activated until the time granted has been exhausted.

The main characteristics, which indicate the functionality of this working mode, are:

Unitary inhibition of all the coins, programmable by the user.

3.5. Starter mode operation

Starter mode operation consists in the sale of a power supply time, which is used to activate the automatism of the charge apparatus.

3.5.1. Description and general characteristics

This operating mode of the Tempus III is used for applications where the services only require a supply impulse (220 Vac.) used to start up the automatism of the machine it controls. 3.6. Photocopier control operating mode A

3.6.1. Description and general characteristics

The operation in photocopier control mode A consists in the sale of impulses, which activate the setting up of the charge. The impulse will end when confirmation is obtained of the end of the last service by means of outside input.

This operating mode of the Tempus III is used for applications where on/off impulses of an indefinite time are required until the conclusion of a specific service. Therefore the Tempus III requires information about the conclusion of the service, so that it can discount it from the accumulated value that appears on the display and, if it is the last, stop the setting up of the charge. The service price value will have to be programmed in the Tempus III and will be responsible for supplying the impulses depending on the credit inserted, ending when confirmation is obtained of the execution of the last service.

When the credit reaches the programmed service price value, the Tempus III activates relays K1 and K2 simultaneously and remains so until the number of services granted have been totally discounted.

4. Accessories4.1. Clock card

Clock card

This is an accessory that can be attached to the Tempus III and that is used for specific applications where a clock in real time is required, as for example in places where promotions are carried out depending on the time (happy-hour). It can also be used to give a free service per day or to apply the second tariff at a certain time.

Furthermore, the Tempus III uses the clock card to discount the time without interruption when working in 24 or 48-hour mode although the apparatus is disconnected during some periods of time.

To enable the clock card in a time period the Tempus III programming must be accessed, proceeding as described in the programming sections of the different operating modes.

The clock card must be connected with the Tempus III switched off.

The clock card must be connected to connector JP2 of the control card + power supply. To do this the display bundle must be disconnected installing the clock card in its place and connecting this bundle to it, as shown in the following diagram:

4.2. Tempus III omega unit

The Tempus III omega unit is a support used to secure the Tempus III to a wall or to any other element. To do this, the Tempus III omega unit will firstly be placed on the wall by means of the six 7.5 diameter boreholes, and then the Tempus III will be attached to the 4 metric screws of the support, fitting perfectly into them.
