AZURE VIRTUAL MACHINECreating a virtual machine that is running the Windows Server operating system is easy when you use the Image Gallery in the Windows Azure Management Portal. With no prior experience, you can create a virtual machine running the Windows Server operating system in the cloud that you can access and customize. If you want to create multiple virtual machines that are set up the same way, you can capture an image of a configured virtual machine and use that image as a template. By using multiple virtual machines in your application, you can make sure that your application is available during local network failures, local disk hardware failures, and any planned downtime that the platform may require. When multiple virtual machines are connected together in a cloud service, an availability set can be used to ensure that the machines are located in different fault domains. The following diagram shows two availability sets with two virtual machines in each set. Windows Azure ensures that the machines are assigned to different update domains. The previous diagram shows two virtual machines running Internet Information Services (IIS) in separate update domains and two virtual machines running SQL Server also in separate update domains.
Azure WebsitesWindows Azure Web Sites offers customers limited disk quota for shared-instance sites. Log files for each site are stored in the site's folder, so they count against the allowed disk quota. This utlity exposes a URL via an IHttpHandler implementation. According to Microsoft, Windows Azure Web Sites allows customers to build scalable websites on Windows Azure. Windows Azure Web Sites uses the languages and open source apps of a customer’s choice and supports deployment with Git, FTP, and TFS. It also allows for the integration of other services like MySQL, SQL Database, caching, CDN, and storage. Windows Azure supports deploying web sites from remote computers using WebDeploy, FTP, Git or TFS. Many development tools provide integrated support for publication using one or more of these methods and may only require that you provide the necessary credentials, site URL and hostname or URL for your chosen deployment method. Credentials and deployment URLs for all enabled deployment methods are stored in the web site's publish profile, a file which can be downloaded in the Windows Azure Management Portal from the Quick Start page or the quick glance section of the Dashboard page.
Windows Azure Platforms and Cloud Services
Cloud computing is a technology that uses the Internet and central remote servers to maintain data and applications. Cloud computing allows consumers and businesses to use applications without installation and access their personal files at any computer via the Internet. This technology allows for much more efficient computing by centralizing storage, memory, processing and bandwidth. Cloud platform services or "Platform as a Service (PaaS)" deliver a computing platform and solution stack as a service, often consuming cloud infrastructure and sustaining cloud applications. It offers deployment of applications without the cost and complexity of buying and managing the underlying hardware and software layers. On other hands, PaaS offers us a basic platform on which we can build our applications and maintain only our applications, the rest is maintained by the PaaS provider. Platform services are often charged on a compute time basis, per transactions, per storage, etc.
Windows Azure StorageWindows Azure, Microsoft's Cloud Computing offering, has three type of storage available: blob, table, and queue. The application will contain two roles, a Web Role for the user interface, and a Worker Role for some background processing. The Web Role will have a simple Web application to upload images to blob storage and some metadata about them to table storage. It will then add a message to a queue which will be read by the Worker Role to add a watermark to the uploaded image.
Windows Azure in SQL DatabaseUse SQL Database for business applications, sophisticated cloud-based services, or hybrid solutions. Share data between SQL databases or between an on-premise instance of SQL Server and a Windows Azure SQL database.For applications that need full SQL Server functionality, Virtual Machines is an ideal solution. You will find SQL Server 2012 and SQL Server 2008 R2 images offered, including standard, web and enterprise editions. If you have an existing SQL Server license with software assurance, as an additional benefit you can move your existing license to Windows Azure and simply pay for compute and storage.
