Objectives Upon successful completion of this lesson, the student shall be able to:

    1. Conduct a pre-use inspection.

    2. Operate the unit using water.

    3. Operate the unit using class A & B foam.

    4. Shut down and ready unit for next use.

    5. Troubleshoot basic issues.

Instructor Information This lesson covering the PyroLance B 1000 M-G operations for both water and foam will demonstratethe UHP fog stream. The purpose of this lesson is to provide the student with an understanding of fulloperations of the B 1000 M-G. While this lesson specifically covers the B 1000 M-G and thePyroLance nozzle operations, the instructor should always stress firefighter safety throughout thecourse. You should emphasize that safety must be a priority for all firefighters in everysituation they may encounter.

Important instructor information is provided in shaded boxes throughout the lesson plan. Carefullyreview the instructor information before presenting the lesson. Use this lesson to initiate discussionon safety issues in the fire service. Supplement this lesson with current case studies involving safetyissues in the fire service.

Methodology This lesson uses demonstration in the field, discussion, and skills practice. The level of learning isapplication.

  • Lesson Goal

Unit 1 lesson goal: After completing this lesson, the student shall be able to correctly start, run andready the PyroLance B 1000 M-G and demonstrate the correct techniques when using the Blitz Udornozzle with both water and foam, following the policies and procedures set forth by PyroLance NorthAmerica LLC and the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).

    B 1000 M-G LESSON PLAN

Section 1: Introduction to Unit 1-3 10 min.

Instructor Note: Briefly review the lesson goal. Answer any questions about the goal.Emphasize that the purpose of the lesson is to familiarize the students with the correctoperations of the PyroLance B 1000 M-G and the Udor Nozzle.

Safety Note: Explain First Aid Procedures involving injuries sustained by UHP equipment andhow to avoid them.

Instructor Note: Discuss the use of UHP with foam when deciding your tactical operations onthe fire ground. Discuss the safety considerations during UHP operations. Explain theadvantages of UHP water mist and how it affects fire.

  • A. Preparing the unit for operations Pages 16-17 of B 1000 M-G manual.

    1) Check the engine oil.

    2) Check the pump oil.

    3) Inspect the belts.

    B 1000 M-G LESSON PLAN

Section 2: Demonstrate the Starting, Running and After-Use Readinessof the B 1000 M-G 30 min.

Instructor Note: The purpose of this section is to walk through each step of the operations ofthe PyroLance B 1000 M-G, showing the students the components of the pump paneloperations. See pages 17-19 of the B 1000 M-G Manual.

Instructor Note: It is very important to stress the difference between a low pressure pump anda UHP system and why the preoperational inspection is crucial.

  • 4) Inspect the clean water strainer.

When re-installing the unit, turn clockwise, hand-tight until snug and check for leaks.

    5) Check water tank level and open tank to pumpvalve.

    6) Check fuel tank level.

Only use unleaded fuel; do not use ethanol blendedfuels.

    7) Connect PyroLance nozzle to hose and ensuresafety lock is engaged.

    B 1000 M-G LESSON PLAN

  • B. Starting the Unit Page 19 of B 1000 M-G manual

    1) Prior to start the operator must ensure that a properinspection has been completed.

    2) Operator to ensure that the EMERGENCY STOPBUTTON is released by twisting clockwise, which isthe ON position (D in picture to the left).

    3) Operator must verify that the Blitz Nozzle iscorrectly connected.

    4) Extend the hose to the working location and lockthe hose reel prior to the Nozzleman pulling thetrigger on the nozzle.

    5) Operator warns personnel that the unit will bestarted.

    6) Operator turns the master switch to the on positionto the left. Turns the ignition switch on like a key in a car.

    C. Water Operations of B 1000 M-G

    1) Open tank to pump lever.

    2) The Udor Blitz is a MANUAL nozzle, when thetrigger is engaged the unit will throttle up.

    3) Point nozzle in safe direction and test water flow.Adjust nozzle to desired pattern and release trigger.

    4) Point nozzle in desired direction and flow water.

    B 1000 M-G LESSON PLAN

Instructor Note: This section will include both the unit/pump operator and the Nozzleman. It isimportant to clarify who is to do what during the demonstration to the students.

See page 7 of manual for description

    Troubleshooting:

ENGINE DOESNT START UP:a) Check Emergency Stop button

is released. b) Check fuses located in unit

electrical box. c) Check Battery connections. d) Check Fuel level in fuel tank.

Instructor Note:Water operations are described as: Using straight water for extinguishment of fire.

Instructor Note: This is a great opportunity to demonstratethe UHP water stream and discuss the droplet size. Explainthe significance of hang time in terms of increasing thehumidity to 30%.

  • D. Foam Operations of B 1000 M-G Page 23 of B 1000 M-G manual

    1) Open tank to pump lever.

    2) The Udor Blitz is a MANUAL nozzle; when thetrigger is engaged the unit will throttle up.

    3) Point nozzle in safe direction and test water flow.Adjust nozzle to desired pattern and release trigger.

    4) Point nozzle in desired direction and flow water.

    5) Turn foam on and flow foam.

    6) Turn foam off and flush with water.

    7) Shut down unit and disconnect nozzles from hose.

    8) Winterize unit if applicable.

    B 1000 M-G LESSON PLAN

    Troubleshooting:

    Udor Blitz Nozzle:

Foam is not flowing Check foam tank Check foam lever is turned on

Water is not flowing Check water tank Check water lever is in on position

  • E. Drafting Operations Page 26 of B 1000 M-G manual

    1) Shut down engine.

    2) Close tank to pump valve.

    3) Remove cap from suction inlet port.

    4) Connect suction hose to inlet with strainer on otherend.

    5) Lower suction hose strainer into water source.

    6) Start pump.

    7) Open primer valve.

    8) Use hand primer to prime suction hose.

    9) Once the pump is primed and lift is observed, closeprimer valve.

    B 1000 M-G LESSON PLAN

Instructor Note: This B-1000-M-G has drafting capabilities to allow for a longer duration of usethan the water tank will allow.

Instructor Note: The pump is capable of drafting water from a maximum of 20 feet.

  • At this point the Instructor will have one student operate the B 1000 M-G and one student operate theUdor Blitz nozzle and go through the operating procedures step by step. There are Skills Sheets forboth the unit operator and the Nozzleman. With a class of six, the time needed to have each studentdo both would be up to two hours.

Each student must demonstrate safe and correct operation procedures of both the B 1000 M-G andthe Udor Blitz nozzle.

    B 1000 M-G LESSON PLAN

Section 3: Skills Practice 20 min. each student

Instructor Note: The purpose of this section is to have each student demonstrate the correctuse of the PyroLance B-1000-M-G and the Udor Blitz nozzle with water and foam.

Section 4: Summary and Review 10 min.

Ask Students: What are the benefits that they see with having both the B 1000 M-G and theUdor Blitz Nozzle on the fire ground?

Briefly discuss the answers with the students. Stress the safety to firefighters and theimportance of using UHP and the limits (another tool in the tool box).

Discussion Point: Discuss with the students how they see the use of UHP can be used on thefire ground. Discuss with the students any issues that they may see with the operations of theunit and talk about solutions. Ask students for solutions.

Ask students if they have any questions.
