    Placing Originals

Some types of originals are unsuit-able for the Auto Document Feeder(ADF), so they must be placed on theexposure glass or the ADF as shownin the illustrations. For details about original types andhow to set original sizes, see Copy Ref-erence. You cannot use [Special Original] under Copy Function. See PlacingOriginals, Copy Reference.Note that original sizes that can be au-tomatically detected differ slightly tothose sizes listed in Sizes Detectableby Auto Paper Select, Copy Reference.See p.210 Original sizes difficult todetect, Facsimile Reference .

Note When you scan originals using the

Auto Document Feeder (ADF), setoriginals in a stack.

When sending a fax, the image thatis output at the other end dependson the size and orientation of pa-per used in the receiver's terminal. If the receiver does not use paperof the same size and orientation asthat of the original, the fax imagemay be reduced in size, trimmed atboth edges, or divided across twoor more sheets. When sending animportant original, ask the receiv-er about the size and orientation ofthe paper used in their terminal.

When sending an original of irreg-ular (i.e. custom) size or part of alarge original, you can specify thescan area precisely. See p.15 Set-ting a Scan Area.

Custom size documents are scannedas regular size documents, so thereceiver may find extra blank mar-gins or edges of images missing. Ifyou specify a scan area, only thatarea will be scanned regardless ofactual document size.

To send an original longer than420mm (17"), specify the area to bescanned under Scan Size and se-lect Long Document mode withthe User Parameters before scan-ning the original using the ADF. Ifa jam occurs, the document mightbe damaged because scanning willnot stop in this mode. See p.15Setting a Scan Area. See p.166User Parameters, Facsimile Refer-ence (switch14, bit 1).

Documents longer than 800mm(32") must be sent by memorytransmission (immediate transmis-sion may not be possible).

If an original jam, press the{{{{Clear/Stop}}}} key, and then carefullyremove the original.

Make sure that all ink, correctingfluid etc., has completely dried be-fore placing your original. If it isstill wet, the exposure glass will bemarked and those marks will ap-pear on the received image.

If you place an A4 size original inthe portrait orientation, the ma-chine rotates the image by 90 de-grees before sending. See p.79Transmission with Image Rota-tion, Facsimile Reference .

You can send the first page fromthe exposure glass then the re-maining pages from the ADF. Youcannot change from the ADF to theexposure glass. When transmittingfrom memory, see p.21 Sendingoriginals using the exposureglass. When sending immediate-ly, see p.27 Sending originals us-ing the exposure glass.

When using the Internet Fax func-tion, documents are sent at A4width. Documents larger than A4are reduced to A4 width. If the re-ceiver's terminal is compliant withthe T.37 full mode, documents aresent at the width specified in theAddress Book. See p.55 T.37 FullMode.

When setting bound originals(books, magazines, etc.), you canselect to have either the left page orright page sent first with the UserParameters. See p.61 Book Fax,Facsimile Reference . See p.166 User Parame-ters, Facsimile Reference (switch 06, bit 6).

    Transmission Modes

There are two types of transmission: Memory Transmission Immediate Transmission

Memory TransmissionTransmission starts automaticallyafter the original has been stored inmemory. It is a convenient methodfor when you are in a hurry andwant to take the document awaywith you. You can also send thesame original to several destina-tions. See p.22 Broadcasting Se-quence.

Immediate TransmissionImmediately dials the destinationnumber, and while reading theoriginal, sends it. It is very conve-nient when you want to send anoriginal quickly or when you wantto check the destination you aresending to. When using this typeof transmission, the original is notstored in memory. You can onlyspecify one address.

Switching between Memory Transmission and Immediate Transmission

Check the display to see which modeis currently active. You can changetransmission mode by pressing[Immed. TX] or [Memory TX].

    Memory Transmission

Memory transmission mode has stan-dard fax, Internet Fax and IP-Fax.

Important If there is a power failure (the main

power switch is off) or the machineis unplugged out for more thanone hour, all the documents storedin memory are deleted. As soon asthe main power switch is turned, the Power Failure Report is print-ed to help you identify deletedfiles. If you turn only the operationswitch off, documents are not de-leted. See p.198 Turning Off theMain Power / When a Power Fail-ure Occurs, Facsimile Reference .

We recommend you call the re-ceiver and confirm with themwhen sending important messag-es.

Limitation If memory is full (0% appears on

the display), Memory Transmis-sion is disabled. Use ImmediateTransmission instead.

    Note Maximum number of destinations

per Memory Transmission: 500. Combined total number of desti-

nations of s tandby messagesstored in memory: 500.

After the total number of pro-grammed destination numbers ex-ceeds 500, you can perform onlyImmediate Transmission.

The number of documents you canstore is 400.

The number of pages you can storein memory depends on the origi-nal images and the scan settings. You can store up to 320 standardpages (ITU-T #4 chart, Resolution:Standard, Original Type: Text). You can store up to 2,240 standardpages, with the optional expansionmemory installed.

    Resolution:Standard, Detail, Super Fine (op-tional)

Original Type:Text, Text / Photo, Photo

Image Density (Contrast):Auto Image Density, Manual Im-age Density (seven levels), Com-bined Auto and Manual ImageDensity

    Resolution

Images and text are scanned into themachine by converting them to se-quences of dots. The density of thedots determines the quality of the im-age and how long it takes to transmit. Therefore, images scanned at highresolution (Super Fine) have highquality but transmission takes longer.Conversely, low resolution (Stan-dard) scanning results in lower quali-ty but your original is sent morequickly. Select the setting that match-es your needs based upon this tradeoff between speed and image clarity.

    Standard (8 x 3.85 lines/mm, 200 x100dpi)Select for originals containing nor-mal size characters.

Detail (8 x 7.7 lines/mm, 200 x 200dpi)Select for originals containingsmall characters or when you re-quire greater clarity. This resolu-tion is twice as fine as Standard.

Super Fine (optional expansion mem-ory required: 16 x 15.4 lines/mm, 400x 400dpi)Select for originals with very finedetails or when you require thebest possible image clarity. Thisresolution is eight times finer thanStandard.

Limitation If the other party's machine does

not support the resolution atwhich you are sending, this ma-chine automatically switches to aresolution that is supported. Youcan check the resolution at whichyou sent actually. See p.162 Print-ing Journal, Facsimile Reference .

Sending with Super Fine resolu-tion requires that your machinehas the optional expansion memo-ry, and the other party's machinehas the capability to receive faxmessages at Super Fine resolution.

    Note The machine supports Standard,

Detail, and (with the optional ex-pansion memory) Super Fine reso-lutions.

You can select the resolution typethat is selected right after the ma-chine is turned on or modes arecleared with [Scan End Reset] underGen. Settings/ Adjust. See p.144General Settings/Adjustment,Facsimile Reference .
