Dear BHS Families,

We have a lot going on at the High School this month. While we are between sports seasons, our student athletes have already started practicing for our spring sports. On March 20th, we brought in a presentation from Edge Factor which is designed to help connect our students with up coming careers and industries right here in Western New York. We will be utilizing this resource to help our students explore possibilities they might want to pursue.

Freshman Class

You are half way through this school year and have begun your career as a high school student! Hopefully, your first year at BHS has gone smoothly and you are beginning to get into the groove of high school. Now that you have been a freshman for two quarters, you probably realize the importance of attending class and completing your homework. Homework is assigned to help you maintain the skills you have learned in class and to help you prepare for tests and quizzes. DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Record homework assignments in your planner and do your assigned coursework on your Chromebook. Remember you need 22 credits to graduate.

As your freshman year progresses, you will continue to have new experiences and be faced with new challenges. It is not uncommon for you to be experiencing some of these “High School Firsts”:

Taking a risk to join a club for the first time without a friend, take a challenging class, or trying out for sports for the first time.

Friends can change. Losing a longtime friend may mean some lonely times during the transition to high school.

Making new friends can be hard and cause teens to join "groups" or "clicks" for the first time.

Navigating first loves is even harder. Most teens do not have the life experiences to know what a healthy relationship looks like.

A poor choice by a teen does not label their character forever. They are probably trying on behaviors for the first time. Don’t let them label themselves by ‘the mistake” they made. It could have lasting effects on their self-esteem.

The School Counseling Department is here to assist you with some of these “Firsts” and with being successful in school. In addition, parents you play a vital role in helping teens succeed in school and at home by being informed and supportive. Even though teens are seeking independence, parental involvement is an important ingredient for academic, social, and emotional success.

SENIORS

It may be tough to believe, but Senior year (and your High School career) is coming to an end. The next few months are filled with important decisions that will determine your future. Here are important steps to make sure you make the most of your remaining time in high school:

Finish strong - You are almost there! As difficult as this may be, it is important to continue to work hard and maintain/improve your grades. Graduation is key, so don’t slip up. Your teachers, counselors and administration is eager to help you make it to graduation. See one (or all) of them for tips on how to finish strong.

Make your official decision - May 1st is Decision Day at Batavia High School. This day is the time that you are making your “official” plans for after high school. There is not much time left, so gather as much information as possible, in order to make the best decision for you.

Financial aid/scholarships - if you are planning to go to college, it is important that all of your financial aid paperwork is turned in and that you understand what your financial aid package means. Your counselor is a great resource to help explain your financial aid package. It is still not too late to look for scholarships either. See Mrs. Goodenberry in the College and Career Center, register at Fastweb.com and stay in touch with your college.

Enjoy!!! - High school is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, filled with ups and downs. This is your last chance to create positive memories and leave a positive mark on Batavia High School. It is always important to work hard, but don’t forget to enjoy the process.

Garden Club News A special thank you to all who supported the Garden Club’s Peony Plant Sale. 39 peonies were sold. Proceeds will go to fund the planting we’ve done in the back greenhouse courtyard, our holiday projects, our newly designed Garden Club T-shirts, and more.

Thank you cards were stamped at one of our meetings for all those who purchased peonies. If you missed our sale…don’t worry…a greater variety of peonies along with hydrangeas and more will be available at our Spring Sale. The peonies have all been planted in pots by the Garden Club and are enjoying the cold weather in our back courtyard until Spring.

The Garden Club is learning the art of decorative painting on wooden owls for our outdoor courtyard décor. Various colors have been chosen. This will be an ongoing Winter Project.

Our Holiday Ornaments couldn’t have turned out cuter! Mason jars were filled with various winter scenes including snow and a word spelled out with small alphabet blocks.

Pinecones were turned into adorable Garden Gnomes.

Lights and birds have appeared in some of the plants around BHS.

A Few Reminders From The Attendance Office

When reporting an absence or to have a child released early please call the Attendance Office

@ 343-2480 ext. 2007. If your call goes to voicemail please leave a message, voicemail

is checked frequently.

Dropping notes off to the Attendance Office first thing in the morning will make early release

appointments easier.

Leaving messages on the Attendance Office voice mail early in the day will assure your child is

not late to appointments.

Calling during the school day, last-minute for immediate release may prove difficult to get

notices to students in study halls, clinics, lunch and P.E. classes.

Batavia High School is a CLOSED CAMPUS students must remain on campus for lunch.

Students are not allowed to go back out to their cars or student parking lot between the hours

of 8:05 - 2:43.

All absences or early release require a hand written note from parent/guardian within 24 hours.

Phone calls do not make your child's absence or early release legal.

Reminder to all PM GVEP Students. Students are not allowed back in the building until

2:43. Students may want to take any of their belongings with them that they will need at the

end of the day when they sign out for GVEP, otherwise you will have to wait in the lobby or

outside until 2:43.

Students have asked the question… “If I am 18 can I sign myself out of school?” The

answer to that question is, NO. According to district policy, if a student still lives at home with

their parents/guardians then they are not allowed to sign themselves out.

Attendance Procedures

Batavia City School District Board policy states that each student shall be required to remain in attendance until the last day of session in the school year in which the student becomes seventeen (17) years of age. PARENTS SHOULD UNDERSTAND THAT EVEN THOUGH THEY MAY APPROVE OF A STUDENT’S ABSENCE AND HAVE NOTIFIED THE SCHOOL, BY NEW YORK STATE LAW AND BOARD OF EDUCATION POLICY, SOME ABSENCES MUST STILL BE MARKED ILLEGAL. Parents are asked to notify the Attendance Office by calling 343-2480, ext. 2007 of a student’s absence. If no call is received, School Messenger will call the parent. The student is required to bring a written excuse from his/her parent within 24 hours of the absence to the attendance office. This note should include: The students name, the date(s) of absence, the reason for absence, the parent/guardian’s signature, and parent/guardian contact information such as name and daytime phone numbers. Notes that don’t have this information will not be honored. Failure to return with a note will result in disciplinary action as that absence will be considered unexcused.
