DIVERGING DIAMOND INTERCHANGE
The diverging diamond interchange, or DDI, is a type of interchange becoming more and more widespread across the country for its ability to increase capacity at a vastly decreased cost than typical interchange types. The DDI concept is based on a standard diamond interchange. The key difference is a shift in the crossroad traffic at each ramp terminal. Within the interchange core, oncoming traffic is on the motorist’s right side, allowing left turn movements to occur with no conflicting movements.
This presentation will provide an overview of the concept and discuss the pros and cons of the design. The presentation will also show case studies of current and near future deployments of the DDI.

When I was in college, every time it came time for exams I would decide that it was necessary for me to work on my juggling skills. Literally. I had hot pink juggling balls (and still do), and worked tirelessly to see if I could manage to keep them all in the air. I have never been entirely successful at the skill, but I’m finding that I still struggle to keep all the balls in the air (both literally and figuratively). This month will be a true test, and my tendencies haven’t changed. If I have a heavy schedule, I always seem to find random things that must also have my attention. Jo Ellen Jarvis MAI, RW/AC
So, my goal for October is to work on my focus. My Mantra, ‘One thing at a time’ (OK maybe two or three – four at the most).
First – Finish appraisal projects so I can stay in the good graces of the people who so kindly hire me. :)
Second: This month’s board meeting. Focus – final details for Northwest Regional, the IRWA sympo-sium, and Regional Fall Forum, and the Murder Mystery dinner (I said 4 right?) Northwest Regional begins the October 28-30th; IRWA symposium picks up the afternoon of October 28 and runs through the morning of October 30th, and the IRWA Regional Meeting is all day October 30th. We end the week and start our Halloween weekend with the IRWA Murder Mystery Dinner at the Heathen Brew Pub in downtown Vancouver. (See flyers for all of these events later in this newsletter). Third: Chapter 3 Budget for 2015/2016. Ready to present to board for questions, revisions, tweaks. (Pretty much done)
IRWA Lunch Meeting: Have to make time to hear the follow up discussion on Paul Sundermier’s dis-cussion about Diverging Diamond Intersections from the perspective of traffic engineer, Smith Siro-maskul from HDR.
Fourth: Flit off to San Antonio to play with my nephews for a few days while my sister and her husband celebrate their anniversary.
Fifth: Murder Mystery Details – Who is the killer? / Victim? / and more importantly, what do we eat??
You get the picture. A typical month: budgets, dinner menus, work, family, symposiums, board meet-ings, and a murder to plan.
Make sure to take a look at the newsletter to stay on top of things this month.
Make it a great month!

We AreFamily
Families pro-vide for their
We Are Family Families provide for their children making sure they have the tools necessary to make their way in the world. Families act as role models for each other; parents lead and train their children; older children model for siblings. Families want the best for the next generations to come. As RWIEF President Carol Croft, SR/WA so aptly described in her address to the IRWA Board of Directors during the 2015 International Education Conference in San Diego, we are family. We gather each year to transact business and there is true affection for our peers. We look forward to catching up with each other -- we know spouses, children and grandchildren. We are truly a professional family. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the way we support education for today’s right of way professionals and the next generation to come. The generosity that members and corporate sponsors showed this year was nothing short of amazing. The Foundations’ golf tournament raised $30,000, the auction $16,000, the Monday night event $36,850 and donations of $45,705 were presented at the Board of Directors’ meeting. A grand total of $128,555! RWIEF has funded approximately $500,000 in education and leadership products over the last three to four years and holds current funding commitments of $182,031. CRWEF has funded approximately $158,231 in education products over the last four years and holds no current funding commitments. With IRWA’s plans to launch six to ten new and revised courses each year for the next three years, your continued support is critical. This year you have emphatically shown your steadfast commitment and support for our family of right of way professionals. On behalf of all in the industry today, and the next generation to come, the RWIEF and CRWEF are ever grateful!

pg 11 Chapter 3 Updates
My sister asked if we would watch Hank for the weekend. They were headed to Sunriver. Hank is their 120 pound 10 year old Chesapeake Bay retriever. If you remember we have beagles – Stanley and Emma. Hank rode home with us the 35 miles from his house to ours. He immediately got out of the car and went for a drink from the decorative fountain pond we have in the back yard. He felt the need to stand in the pond instead of from the side. Now it was time to take our large body into the house all wet and explore. Lesson One: Jumping in with both feet (or all four) sometimes makes a mess and a slower more cautious entry may be called for. Stanley and Emma were excited to have company except for the food issues. Stanley is a bit food aggressive. We thought that three bowls would help define territory but apparent-ly they did not have the appropriate distance between them. A fracas ensued. Hank gin-gerly picked up his bowl and moved it 15 feet away from Stanly and Emma and all things calmed down. Lesson Two: Sometimes it is best to just remove yourself from the situation. Not every fight is worth fighting if there is another solution that works for all.
Hank and his cat at home have a special relationship. Hank carries Oreo the cat around by its head. In his mouth. Joseph (our used cat if you remember from a previous column) did not see the relationship as the same. Joseph ended up on the peak of the shop in ter-ror. I asked Brian to get him down because I had to be off and catch our car pool. It was quite the romp around the neighborhood and a final coming together. Joseph spent the weekend upstairs locked away from Hank. Lesson Three: What works in one relationship will not always work in the next one. Hank’s head is shrinking and you can see indentations in his head. It’s called Masticatory Muscle Myositis if you want to look it up. It does not really seem to bother him but if he finds a bone or large ball and carries it in his mouth he can no longer see anything because his eyes end up shut or recessed in his head. I did not look that close. It causes an issue with steps and other objects in your path. Lesson Four: Make sure that you are not carry-ing something so big – a person, an idea, a thing - that you lose sight of what’s going on around you.
Hank enjoyed a different dog food while he was at our house. It gave him gas – awful gas, consistent gas, “I cannot breathe” gas. We made sure he had a full belly of food for the drive home with my sister. Lesson Five: … well, you need to ask my sister, Jane, what that one is.
