Kingdom of Kush

• The first major group to rival the Egyptians for control of the Nile was known as the Kingdom of Kush by the Egyptians

• Located at the third Cataract• A bend in the Nile allowed for a large fertile

flood plain

• During the Egyptian Middle Kingdom and the Second Intermediate period, the Nubians were able to reclaim the land lost.

• The Egyptian soldiers at some of the fortresses actually changed their allegiance to the Nubians.

• During the second Intermediate Period in Egypt, the Kush are said to have fought with the Hykos against Egypt.

• This is the first evidence we have of the Nubians entering Egypt and attacking it

• Archeology digs have shown that the Nubians conquered areas in Egypt and brought back souvenirs

• The Nubians worked with the Hykos to try to divide Egypt amongst themselves.

• This Can be seen on the Stele

• this attempt failed and the Egyptian rulers in Thebes were able to reestablish centralized government, creating Egypt’s New Kingdom.
