Hebrews 4:12 says this: “For the Word of God is living and active; sharper than any double-edged sword…” What a powerful verse that describes the magnificent Word of God. I’ve always been fascinated by swords and I’m a sucker for swashbuckling sword fight in all the old movies. I think God describes His Word like a sword because He knows exactly how to penetrate our lives with it just where it needs to be and to the depth it needs to be. Our children need to know that the Bible is God’s powerful Word. They need to know that it is important for them to learn about all the great Bible stories and their characters. Here is a fun Bible activity to help them do just that. It’s called “Bible Story Swords. Here’s what you do:For this Bible activity you will need to gather 6 or more pretend swords. I actually made mine from paint sticks and tongue depressors. I painted them yellow and then I wrote the name of a Bible character on each one. Here are the names I picked: Adam, Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses and David. I then stick them in between the pages of my very big family Bible. Next, I gathered 6 pictures that illustrate each of the stories. You can either place these pictures on a pocket chart or a table for all the class to see. Or you can put them in a Power Point presentation so that they are up on the big screen. You are now ready to play the game. Here’s how to play:Ask a child to come forward and pull a sword out of the Bible. Read the name on the sword and then have him go and point to the picture that matches his Bible character. Have the class clap at his success in matching. Before playing, you might want to introduce the game in the following way: Pull out a pretend sword with flair and say, “Wow! What is this boys and girls?” (Wait for responses.) That’s right! It’s a sword! Swords are really cool and this sword reminds me of my Bible. Do you know why? Because the Bible calls the Word of God the sword of the Spirit. It’s important that we learn all the great stories in the Bible. For example, who likes the story of Noah when God asked him to build a big boat? Or how about the story of David when he knocked down Goliath? Those are great stories. Let’s play a game to help us learn some more of God’s great stories. In my big Bible there are some swords sticking out. I will let one of you come up and pull out a sword. There will be a name on it. We will read the name and then you will need to look at the pictures I have on the table and match your sword with the right picture. Ready? Let’s play!
