Believe in Yourself

By Ashi, LSR Delhi

That’s when you have to tell yourself that things will get better. There are times when

people disappoint you and let you down.

But those are the times when you must remind yourself to trust your own judgments and

opinions, to keep your life focused on believing in yourself.

There will be challenges to face and changes to make in your life, and it is up to you to

accept them .There may be days when you get up in the morning and things aren’t the way

you had hoped they would be.

Constantly keep yourself headed in the right direction for you. It may not be easy at times,

but in those times of struggle you will find a stronger sense of who you are.

So when the days come that are filled with frustration and unexpected responsibilities,

remember to believe in yourself and all you want your life to be.

Because the challenges and changes will only help you to find the goals that you know are

meant to come true for you.

B N Satnalika Foundation reaches to underprivileged children so to ensure

they get access to proper elementary education.

Contribute as low as INR 3600 (10 a day) for 1 child and do your

part of good towards the society whom we neglect at large.

Child Labour

-By Anshu, LSR Delhi

It is not unheard of when it comes to child labour in India. Because India is

larger than many other third-world countries, it is said to possibly have the

highest child labour. There are estimated to be around 25 million child laborers

in India. These children that do child labour are typically between the ages of

five years and fourteen years old.

Two of the main reasons for child labour in India is due to poverty and not

having good schools. Poor parents give birth to children thinking them as

money-making machines. They carry infants to earn more on the streets from

begging. Then as they grow they make them beggars, and eventually sell them

to employers.

There have been laws put in place to help put an end to child labour in India,

but unfortunately, it has not completely stopped it. There are various

organizations which are fighting against child labour by helping children and

imparting education among that part of society from where majority of the

child labour comes. Poor families should be given knowledge about family

planning/control so that they are not burdened by children. It would be

advisable not to keep small children at home for taking domestic help in daily

household chores.

Let us all take some step in this direction so that we can bring smiles to many

faces and make this world a beautiful place for a child to live in.

Nothing that is worth knowing can be taught

By-Aishwarya, LSR Delhi

“Five Cops Booked, Two Arrested for Raping and Threatening Minor Girl”

“Mumbai: Air India cabin crew member arrested for allegedly raping girl”

“Female foeticide or sex determination is not get done by uneducated people only, it is done in by

educated people more.”

“The street crime, especially snatching and motor vehicle theft, relatively down compared to 2010,

the year 2011 truly belonged to the faceless white-collar criminals.”

‘Education is the manifestation of perfection already existing in man.’

- Swami Vivekananda

‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the

world.’

-Nelson Mandela

These two quotations are by two legendary men. They reflect the beliefs

shared by millions of people across the world, especially India. Whenever the

rate of a particular crime escalates or a social evil commences thriving, the

demands for education for all become common. Education is considered the

need of the hour and a panacea for a plethora of problems. However, a glance

at the aforementioned headlines seems to indicate something else. The crimes

committed by educated people appear to be snowballing. The problem here is

that the need for education is accepted and acknowledged in numerous places

but the quality of that education is often neglected. After the heinous Delhi

Gang rape and all the hue and cry about it, especially about the urgent

requirement to change the mindsets of people; did the schools in Delhi

introduce sex education for their students? Do they stress on the application of

the cogently taught ‘ways to save electricity and water or ways to prevent

global warming? Do they arrange for practical moral classes, to reinforce the

notion that having more is not equivalent to happiness, to convince them to

value fairness and not give in to the temptation of achieving things by corrupt

means? Unfortunately, the answer to all these questions is ‘no’. A few schools

do endeavour to do this but on a very small scale. What we need in India is not

education but ‘quality’ education. So, let’s aim to achieve that and prove Oscar

Wilde wrong. (Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from

time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught.

10 a Day Campaign

B N Satnalika Foundation has launched 10 a Day Campaign in several colleges

across India. Here’s a glimpse:

Spending Rs 10 a day is a very normal thing. We, consider it as a negligible amount. But instead of

letting this amount go somewhere not worth remembering; contributing it to build a child’s future is

a much more noble thing to do. Your kind gesture today will make a big difference in a child’s life.

Education

By Meghna, LSR Delhi

Education is commonly referred to as the process of learning and obtaining

knowledge at school in form of formal education, but for me it doesn't confine

only to this formal education but it means much beyond it. We are the lucky

ones who can read and write this but there are many who don't even know

what education even means. We are lucky ones who study in the most

prestigious colleges of our country but there are many who have not even seen

what a school is like.

Think of a child in a rural area who don't even know what an expiry date

means, there are many who are consuming expired medicines die. Think of a

child who wants to study and do something for a nation but has no means to

study. Think about those helpless parents who want to admit their kids in

schools but they can't.

It’s no one else but we who need to bring our steps forward to help those in

need. We can't depend on the corrupted government anymore. Teaching

alphabets to a maid's son or daughter will never waste your time or money but

it will contribute to your own will power. Contributing Rs 10 or 20 for a child's

education is not a big amount for someone who gets Rs 2000 or more as

pocket money. So, contribute not only for a child but for our country's future.

So, think broad and learn to live for others too

What is Education? It’s State?

By Urmi

Education today suffers from a growing divides across its recipients. The sheer

heterogeneity and diversity of the classroom can also be a barrier to learning,

though conceptually it should be the most desired attribute of classrooms, as

far as bringing a plethora of opinions is concerned.

Heterogeneity is a problem on many levels and this isn’t the first domain in

which heterogeneity has been contested. Our nation state suffers from valuing

too many opinions and too many voices such that it is difficult to come up with

a common remedy or solution to issues. One only needs to glance at the state

of coalition politics today before acknowledging diversity as the root cause of

indecisiveness and inefficiency. Diversity in the classroom space is accounted

for by people from different backgrounds, hailing from different cultural

contexts and living by differing principles. Integration has remained one of the

most persistent problems and it remains nearly impossible to mitigate. Most

public spaces and social groups however are the reflection of our social

surroundings and the classroom space is also a reflection of the segmentation

prevalent in society. Certain sections of the student body remain alienated

from the others because of their inability to find common ground with the rest

of their peer group. Thus the concept of reservations have not really served as

a basis for a wholesome education, as beneficial as they maybe for the

individual’s academic prowess and empowerment. This goes onto show

institutions of society are permeated by the biases, conceptions and prejudices

that manifest in it.

Education and syllabi is also under criticism for being uncompromising of the

varied capabilities of students. Education attempts to be homogenising when

©B N Satnalika Foundation | [email protected] | www.bnsatnalikafoundation.org

the population it caters to is heterogeneous. Every individual has a particular

pace of learning, understanding and absorbing. The classroom space is

unaccommodating of these differences and thus education becomes a burden

for many. Of course the increasing class sizes and misbalanced student-teacher

ratios do not help the cause of these students.

Problems with this institution not unlike other institutions are in abundance.

However, education remains one of the pillars of the modern world which is

enshrined in its social fabric. Institutions of the state can only act as facilitators

of state ideology or societal culture. They seldom are bastions of change

themselves. Thus many levels of reform are required, not just superficially in

institutions but also in the social fabric in which they are embedded.
