New Courses Developed for ASU
Advanced Pavement Analysis Systems: This course covers classic and emerging methods of
mechanistic analysis of flexible pavements. Specific learning objectives include:
1. Outline the mechanistic pavement analysis process in general terms
2. Calculate pavement performance using mechanistic and mechanistic empirical pavement
analysis principles
3. Determine the stress/strain responses of linear viscoelastic materials to strain/stress input
4. Apply the uniaxial theory of linear viscoelasticity to asphalt concrete materials
The framework of mechanistic pavement analysis is first explained with the aid of the NCHRP
developed mechanistic-empirical pavement analysis engine. Then, the students are introduced to
linear viscoelastic analysis to prepare them for more advanced pavement analysis systems. Finally,
advanced pavement analysis systems that incorporate more robust mechanistic models are discussed.
Students carry out mini-projects for each topic and prepare a research paper detailing the use of
advanced pavement analysis to solve an engineering problem.
Inelastic Materials: This course seeks to address this need by presenting and discussing applied
inelastic mechanics theories in the context of explaining the behaviors of civil engineering materials.
Specific learning objectives include:
1. Derive a mathematical model for linear viscoelasticity from a mechanical analog and apply
the theory to experimental data in order to characterize the parameters of the associated
models;
2. Apply Laplace and inverse Laplace Transforms to relate elastic solutions to viscoelastic
problems;
3. Calculate the time-dependent stress (strain) response to a generalized strain (stress) input;
4. Derive the time-dependent linear viscoelastic response functions from the frequency-
dependent response functions and vice-versa;
5. Evaluate the mechanical response of different materials for a given external loading histories,
select the material with the most optimal response, and justify why the chosen material best
meets the demands.
Basic material behaviors are first described. Then, linear viscoelasticity is defined using mechanical
analogs followed by integral (blackbox) methods. The constitutive relationships are explained and
solved for before experimental methods and characterization procedures are described. Finally,
behaviors beyond linear viscoelasticity (flow, damage, and fracture) are described and analytical
models developed.
