The disciples on the road to Emmaus walked and talked with Jesus
all day long, but it was not until they offered Him hospitality
and He blessed and broke the bread that they recognized Him. Simple
acts of loving kindness still reveal the presence of God in our midst.
Northwest Catholic School News Northwest Catholic Lenten Journey: Prayer,
Almsgiving, Fasting ~ Our students are learning
about Lent. Lent is a time when we slow down and
think about how our life is going and how we can become closer to
Jesus. During this time, we focus on prayer, giving to others, and
making small sacrifices. Our students will be praying the Stations of
the Cross and their almsgiving service project is to provide Easter
meals for deserving families. Each class/grade level has been
assigned one item. Together we will make a difference.
Stations of the Cross will be held in the church at 10:00AM at the Lower
Campus and at 11:00AM at the Upper Campus Fridays March 28,
April 4, and April 11. We welcome you to join us.

ADJUSTING THE SUNDAY MASS SCHEDULE
Throughout this past year, there has been discussion among parishioners, parish council
members and staff members about addressing the number of people attending each Sunday Mass.
In fact, one parishioner after an 8:30 a.m. Mass asked me, “Father, when are you going to address the
Sunday Mass issue?” The same conversation is also happening at Our Lady of Good Hope Parish (OLGH)
where they are changing to only one Sunday Mass beginning on Easter Sunday. The time has come for us
to move forward as well. As parish leaders, we are fully aware how difficult it is to change. We are all in
this together desiring to make decisions which are beneficial to our parish community as well as within
our cluster and the larger Archdiocese.
Over 25 years ago, the standard used in our Archdiocese for combining Sunday Masses was basically:
any Mass less than half full (to capacity of the church building) was to be combined with another Sunday
Mass. Over the past number of months, our 8:30 a.m. Mass has averaged 60-80 people and the 10:30
a.m. Mass has averaged 125-150 people, give or take. Officially, we report the numbers twice a year to
the Archdiocese. The reality is that we do not have the numbers to sustain our two Sunday Masses.
While OLGH will be instituting their Mass change on Easter Sunday, I am looking to change St.
Bernadette’s Mass schedule on Memorial Day weekend, May 25, 2014, seeing that our numbers are
affected even more by summer traveling. Therefore, going forward we would offer one Saturday evening
Mass and one Sunday morning Mass.
The question remains, “What is the best time for our Sunday morning Mass?” Please offer us your
suggestions within this coming week. I have been discussing this change with Fr. Mike, the Pastor of
OLGH, and Debbie Hintz, the Parish Director of St. Catherine Parish. The greater wisdom surrounding this
change may be to decide this together with OLGH – having a Sunday Mass at 9 a.m. at OLGH and a 10:30
a.m. Mass at St. Bernadette, so that in the not too distant future, both Masses could be served by one
and the same priest. Realizing that the future plan for our cluster of parishes in 2020 is to have one priest
serving all three parishes, I believe that we need to move in the direction of greater collaboration within
our parishes. After consulting the Parish Council and other parish leaders at OLGH, Fr. Mike informed me
that they are willing to shift their morning Mass to 9 a.m. if we are willing to keep our Sunday Mass at
10:30 a.m. If we were to decide at this moment to have our Sunday Mass at another time such as at 9:30
a.m. or 10 a.m., it would then mean that the Mass schedule would have to be readjusted once again
whenever there is a further reduction in the number of priests serving our three parishes. In summary, it
seems most logical to align our Sunday Mass together with that of OLGH Parish.
In life, there are times and moments when it is necessary to address the reality that is before us, and
ultimately be called upon to make tough decisions. It is most important that we focus our efforts on
praying well, remaining welcoming and hospitable to all who come through our doors, offering fellowship
gatherings and continuing outreach in Christ’s name to those around us. May the Holy Spirit always
guide and sustain us in caring for the mission of the greater Church!
