Thirty-five games later, the Tigers finished 32-3, went undefeated in both Dis- trict 8 and Region 2 play, and reached the Sweet 16 state tournament for the first time since 2003. Haworth, in only his second season at the helm of the Hop- kinsville pro- gram, was selected the Kentucky New Era boys’ coach of the year for the 2011-12 season. The vote was conducted by southern Pennyrile coaches and New Era sports writers. Two of Haworth’s players earned selections to the 2011-12 All-Kentucky New Era boys’ bas- ketball team. Junior Jordan Majors, who garnered All-State honorable mention honors from The As- sociated Press after averaging 16.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game for the District 8 and Region 2 champion Tigers, was named the team’s shoot- ing guard. Majors’ teammate and fellow All-District and All-Region performer Jaqualis Matlock was voted as the club’s power forward. Matlock, who aver- aged 12.3 points and 8.4 re- bounds for the Tigers, is the lone freshman on the team. Joining Majors in the backcourt is Trigg County standout Deon- quez Nance. The junior point guard, who also earned AP All- State honorable mention accolades, averaged 21.5 points, 5.7 rebounds for the Wildcats (21-7). Christian County junior co- captain C.J. Cotton was se- lected the team’s starting small forward after leading the de- fending state champion Colonels to a 9-22 final record and the semifinals of the Re- gion 2 tournament. Nick Allen, a senior at Univer- sity Heights Academy, rounds out the team at center. Allen, who was also a standout de- fender on the UHA soccer team, led the Blazers to a 14-12 record. Players earning at least one vote and honorable mention for the All-KNE boys’ team were Chris- tian County’s Jarvis Irby, UHA’s Dashjon Brown, K’Quan Mc- Nease, Quadre White and Lam- ontas “Boo” Johnson, Fort Campbell’s Kyle Bryant and Trigg County’s David Wease. Hoptown won the District 8 and Region 2 championships, and de- feated Marshall County 65-52 in the first round of the Sweet 16 state tournament. It was the Lady Tigers’ first-ever state tour- nament win. Led by head coach Tonya Wells, Hopkinsville finished the season 32-5. Wells was se- lected the Kentucky New Era girls’ coach of the year. The vote was conducted by southern Pennyrile coaches and New Era sports writers. A large portion of Hopkinsville’s success was due to Murray State signee and Region 2 Player of the Year Christy Soldo, who was named All-State honorable men- tion by The Associated Press. The senior standout, who averaged 18.9 points and 9.5 rebounds for the Lady Tigers, was selected the team’s power forward. Joining Soldo down low is team- mate Ashlee Cole. The senior center averaged 10.7 points and 9.2 re- bounds during the 2011-12 campaign. Haley Cook, an- other major con- tributor for the Hopkinsville club, was voted the team’s shooting guard. Cook aver- aged 10 points. Christian County’s Martes- sia Williams, who also earned AP All- State honorable metion acclaim, is the team’s floor general. The senior point guard, who signed with Bethel University in McKenzie, Tenn., earlier this month, led the Lady Colonels to a 14-14 final mark. Williams started four years at Christian County. Rounding out the starting five for the 2011-12 All-KNE girls’ basketball team is Todd County Central’s Ariel John- son. The junior small forward aver- aged 16.8 points and 5.9 rebounds en route to guiding the Lady Rebels (23-7) to their second straight District 13 title. Other players who earned at least one vote and honorable mention accolades were Todd County Central’s Khalisha Rose and Claire Hart, Caldwell County’s McKenzie Ames, Fort Camp- bell’s Alli Tellez, University Heights Academy’s Dannika Prater and DeNayia Holmes, and Christian County’s Kimberly Hyde.
