Hopkinsville High Schoolboys’ basketball coach Tim Ha-worth knew he had a specialteam heading into the 2011-12season. Thirty-five gameslater, the Tigers finished 32-3,went undefeated in both Dis-trict 8 and Region 2 play, andreached the Sweet 16 state
tournament forthe first timesince 2003.
Haworth, inonly his secondseason at thehelm of the Hop-kinsville pro-gram, wasselected theKentucky New
Era boys’ coach of the year forthe 2011-12 season.
The vote was conducted bysouthern Pennyrile coaches andNew Era sports writers.
Two of Haworth’s playersearned selections to the 2011-12All-Kentucky New Era boys’ bas-ketball team.
Junior Jordan Majors, whogarnered All-State honorablemention honors from The As-sociated Press after averaging16.4 points and 5.4 rebounds
per game for the District 8 andRegion 2 champion Tigers,was named the team’s shoot-ing guard.
Majors’ teammate and fellowAll-District and All-Regionperformer Jaqualis Matlockwas voted as the club’s powerforward. Matlock, who aver-aged 12.3 points and 8.4 re-bounds for the Tigers, is the
lone freshmanon the team.
Joining Majorsin the backcourtis Trigg Countystandout Deon-quez Nance. Thejunior pointguard, who alsoearned AP All-State honorable
mention accolades, averaged21.5 points, 5.7 rebounds for theWildcats (21-7).
Christian County junior co-captain C.J. Cotton was se-lected the team’s starting smallforward after leading the de-fending state championColonels to a 9-22 final recordand the semifinals of the Re-gion 2 tournament.
Nick Allen, a senior at Univer-sity Heights Academy, roundsout the team at center. Allen,
who was also astandout de-fender on theUHA soccer team,led the Blazers toa 14-12 record.

The Hopkinsville girls’ basketballteam enjoyed the winningest sea-son in program history in 2011-12.
Hoptown won the District 8 andRegion 2 championships, and de-feated Marshall County 65-52 in thefirst round of the Sweet 16 statetournament. It was the Lady Tigers’first-ever state tour-nament win. Led byhead coach TonyaWells, Hopkinsvillefinished the season32-5.
Wells was se-lected the KentuckyNew Era girls’coach of the year.
The vote wasconducted bysouthern Pennyrile coaches andNew Era sports writers.
A large portion of Hopkinsville’ssuccess was due to Murray Statesignee and Region 2 Player of theYear Christy Soldo, who wasnamed All-State honorable men-tion by The Associated Press. Thesenior standout, who averaged 18.9
points and 9.5 rebounds for theLady Tigers, was selected theteam’s power forward.
Joining Soldodown low is team-mate Ashlee Cole.The senior centeraveraged 10.7points and 9.2 re-bounds during the2011-12 campaign.
Haley Cook, an-other major con-tributor for theHopkinsville club,was voted theteam’s shootingguard. Cook aver-aged 10 points.
C h r i s t i a nCounty’s Martes-sia Williams, whoalso earned AP All-State honorablemetion acclaim, isthe team’s floorgeneral. The senior point guard,who signed with Bethel Universityin McKenzie, Tenn., earlier thismonth, led the Lady Colonels to a14-14 final mark. Williams started
four years at Christian County.Rounding out the starting five for
the 2011-12 All-KNE girls’ basketballteam is Todd CountyCentral’s Ariel John-son. The juniorsmall forward aver-aged 16.8 points and5.9 rebounds enroute to guiding theLady Rebels (23-7) totheir second straightDistrict 13 title.
Other players whoearned at least onevote and honorablemention accoladeswere Todd CountyCentral’s KhalishaRose and ClaireHart, CaldwellCounty’s McKenzieAmes, Fort Camp-bell’s Alli Tellez,University HeightsAcademy’s DannikaPrater and DeNayia Holmes, andChristian County’s Kimberly Hyde.
Fort Campbell’s Brooke Taylorreceived a vote for the girls’ topcoach.
