Solutions and tools for overburden drilling
THE POWER TO CUT THROUGH

OVERBURDENDRILLINGDrilling through overburden is always a challenging task. Ground conditions can vary greatly, and sensitive handling is often needed, especially on sites where there are existing foundations.
A key to success is having tools that can eliminate over-drilling, thus preventing settlement and damage to nearby buildings and structures. Air control is critical. You need sufficient air pressure, but it must be mastered effectively.
SANDVIK CENTREX PRO
RETRIEVABLE RING BIT SYSTEM
Our overburden drilling system, Sandvik Centrex Pro, answers the challenges of drilling through difficult materials in sensitive terrain. It delivers outstanding performance in virtually any conditions, with unmatched air control, flushing and straightness control.
Zero or reduced risk of air
escape, especially in clay
Crosswise flushing with no
pressure against the ground
Back flush reduces risk of
getting stuck in the hole
and helps remove material
Guide centre minimizes
risk of hole deviation
Cutting edges for improved
drilling in hard clay
Slim design for
easy retrieval

Double shoulders
for long service life
Large inner diameter
for maximum space for
installed elements
Integrated wear
resistant ring set
Zero or reduced risk of
over-drilling, especially
in sand
Zero or reduced disturbance
of marine deposits
For applications where the casing is retrieved and used several times, two main criteria must be met: a large ID and a strong structure. The sets are designed to last for hundreds of metres, even when hard rock formations are encountered. The system is designed so that the casing can always be pulled out after drilling. The large ID enables the use of maximum size rock socket and installed elements.
Main applications for multi-use retrievable system:
In situ piles (skin friction) where casing is fully retrieved
Anchoring applications
Pre-drilling/temporary casing applications
Energy/water wells where casing is fully removed

LARGE ID RING BIT SYSTEM
INTEGRATED THICK-WALL RING BIT SYSTEM
In applications such as water or geothermal well drilling, where you need to continue drilling after the casing is installed, a maximal inner diameter is required to allow for a regular drill bit.
End-bearing piles are typically drilled several metres into bed-rock, where the casing often serves as a load-bearing member. If any rock socket is drilled after casing is set (typically for a tensioning rod), there are no specific ring bit ID requirements.
This system is designed to drill straight piles through boulders, rock layers and into inclined bedrock. Often, the casing is also a load-bearing member. The heavy duty ring bit and casing shoe are not integrated, making this the most economical ring bit alternative. Typical applications include end-bearing piles or micro-piles, slope stabilization, pipe wall, king piles, etc.

WHEN ONLY THE TOUGHEST WILL DO
If your job is so challenging that stock product is not enough, we
can create a project-specific heavy duty product for you. The tool
will be designed to meet the specific requirements specified.
Features will include strong double shoulders, ring bits made from
extra-durable material, and the option of long solitary ring bits and
interlocked ring bits.
Main applications for integrated systems:
End bearing piles including micro-piling
Pilings with sacrificed casings, which have
no large ID ring bit requirements
Slope stabilization
Pipe walls, king piles
Main applications for large ID ring bit systems:
Piling with sacrificed casings and rock socket
Energy/water wells
Surface casings (sealing, dewatering)
Main applications for solitary systems:
End bearing piles including micro piling
Pilings with sacrificed casings, which
have no large ID ring bit requirements
Slope stabilization
Pipe walls, king piles etc.
WELLDRILLINGWater and geothermal boreholes now tend to be drilled deeper and deeper. Depths of 300m are commonplace, so the right equipment is essential in order to meet the challenge. To ensure optimal results and project economy, the complete drill string – including drill pipes, hammer and bits – should be designed to optimize air flow.
A successful project demands technical solutions thatminimize fuel consumption and speed up drilling; time andcost are always major pressures. Reliability is key – abortingdrilling due to tool failure is expensive and unnecessary.

When drilling a water well or geothermal well, you need to go deep. Sandvik Twin Gauge bits takes you all the way. Sandvik Twin Gauge will continue drilling and keep the right diameter where conventional DTH drill bits reach the limit and should be resharpened or discarded.
SANDVIK TWIN GAUGE BITS
Over 15% longer service life compared to a conventional bitUnique design with enhanced flushing Assures smooth and reliable drillingUltimate performance in combination with Sandvik RH460 DTH hammer series
Sandvik High Flow pipes give longer life, improved drilling performance and the lowest pressure drop in the industry. The secret? Surface hardened tool joints, energy-optimized internal design and highly accurate threads. The cold-drawn seamless pipes are extremely straight, which means smoother drilling with less stress on the rig. Their higher strength enables thinner walls and lower weight.
SANDVIK HIGH FLOW DRILL PIPES
Friction welding removes
the need for shrink fit, which
means lower weight.
Joints are 100% metal to metal, with parent
metal properties and a low-temperature
process. This ensures high strength with
low risk of failure.
Threads are case hardened and
typically give 50% longer service life
compared to traditional materials.
A smooth inside surface
eliminates risk of scaling
destroying the hammer.

FUEL-SAVING DESIGN
Lower air consumption means lower fuel
costs. The air cycle of the RH460 hammer
optimizes the expansion and compression
rate, giving more power with less air.
ROCK SOLID
The V-lock system is designed to prevent the movement of
the inner cylinder and air distributor, reducing galling-related
failures. This simple design means no tools are required for
assembly or disassembly. The steel make-up ring creates a
constant make-up force, independent of temperature and time.
SMOOTH RUNNING
The special oil grooves in the RH460 piston
ensure constant and consistent lubrication
between the piston and internal parts to re-
duce galling-related failures. They are also
designed to help to minimize air leakage.
The RH460 down-the-hole hammer has been developed with a focus on improving reliability and economy through reducing air consumption, increasing power and improving lubrication. It gives higher impact energy with lower levels of air consumption, securing high productivity in variable ground conditions.
The RH460 series consists of five standard-sized hammers from 3 1/2” to 8”. All are designed to utilize bits with generic shank types.

NO VIBRATION
The piston bearing surface is
designed and located for better
bearing capabilities. It eliminates
bending vibrations that can
result in galling failures.
