Sprinklersystemsareautomaticfireextinguishingsystems,whichareusedforpreventativefireprotectioninspecialbuildingssuchassky-scrapers, commercialbuildings, departmentstores, industrialinstalla-tions, placesof publicassemblyandundergroundcarparks.
Thesprinklerheadwasinventedin1874 bytheAmericanHenryS.Parmalee, apianomanufacturer. Originally,thesprinklerheadsweresealedwithasmallmetalplatethatwasheldinplacebyadeviceconnectedtoasolder. Thesoldermeltswithacorrespondingriseintemperatureandtheholdingdevicereleasesthesmallmetalplate,whichisinturnexpelledbythepressureofthewaterbehindit,whichthenstartsspraying.
Severalsprinklerheadsthatareconnectedtoawaterpipesystemareplacedontheceilingoftheroomorontheupperpartofthesidewalls. Thesprinklerheadsareinturnsealedwithglassampoulesthatarefilledwithaspecialdyedfluid. Thereisaconstantwaterpressureinasprinklersystemthatismonitoredatthecentralsprinklercontrolpoint. Intheeventof afire,thespecialfluidintheglassampoulesheatsupandexpands, causingtheampoulestoburst. Thatopensthenozzlesandwaterisreleasedfromthesprinklerpipesystem. Thecol-ourofthespecialfluidindicatesthetriggeringtemperature. Thistriggeringtemperatureisonaverageapproximately30 Cabovetheanticipatedroomtemperature.
Theresultingdropinpressureisdetectedandleadstotheopeningofspecialvalvesandthestartingof oursprinklerpumps. Waterisimme-diatelypumpedathighpressureoutofthetanksprovidedorfromawaterconnectiondesignedforthatpurposeandintothesprinklersystem. Thewaterisexpelledfromallopenwaternozzlesandextin-guishesorminimisesthefire.
Thedimensionsofthepipeworkandofthewatersupplyaredesigned
insuchawaythatonlyenoughwaterforaparticularnumberofwaternozzlesisavailable,whichiscalledtheeffectivesurface. If moresprinklerheadsopenthanareavailablewithintheeffectivesurface,thentheamountofwateravailablepersprinklerheaddropsandtheeffectivenessofthesystemisdiminished.
Sprinklersystemsarethereforechieflycapableof fightingafireinitsinitialstages(incipientfire) andnotforfightingafireblazingatgreatintensity.Afireproof separationmustbeerectedbetweenareasthatlackasprinklersystemandonesthathaveoneinordertoensurethatablazingfireoriginatinginanunprotectedareaisnotabletocrossoverintoanareaofthebuildingthatisprotectedwithasprinklersys-tem.
Whatarereferredtoasdrypipesystemsareimplementedinareaswherethereisariskof frostwherethesprinklerpipescouldfreeze.Thepipesystemintheseinstallationsisfilledwithcompressedair.Theinstallationisnotfilledwithwateruntilasprinklerheadhasbeentriggered.
Asisthecasewithconventionalfiredetectors, sprinklercontrolpointsaregenerallyconnectedtofiredetectionsystemsandtriggerafirealarmwhenadropinpressurehasbeendetected. Dependingontheprogramming,thesearetransmittedtothepolice, firedepart-ment, factorysecurityofficesorotherofficesprovidingaid.
Asarule,theconfigurationof sprinklersystemsinGermanyisinac-cordancewiththeVdSRegulationCEA4001 (VdSDamagePreven-tion, CEAComit EuropendesAssurances). TheAmericanStandardoftheNFPA(NationalFireProtectionAssociation) -alsoknowninmodifiedorfurtherdevelopedformofthedirectivesasFM (FactoryMutual) Standard-ishoweverincreasinglyenjoyingthefavourof in-ternationalbuildingcompaniesandisasarulealsoacceptedinthemeantimebyGermangovernmentauthorisationagencies. Thesys-temisconfiguredaccordingtothefirehazardlevelintheareatobeprotectedbydeterminingthewatersaturationofthefiresourcebe-tween2.25 mm/minand30 mm/min(1 mm/minisequivalentto1l/m2/min),theeffectivetimebetween30and90 minandofthedis-tancebetweenthesprinklerheads.

ormationTheGermaninsuranceindustryrecognisedatanearlystagethatitisabsolutelyessentialtomakeriskscontrollableandinsurableinactivedamageprevention.Alreadyaround100yearsago,theyfoundedthe"Sprinklermonitoringagency". DuringtheThirdReich,theassocia-tionof privatefireinsurersandtheassociationof publicfireinsurerswereclosed. Nevertheless,thesprinklermonitoringagencycouldcontinuetheirworktoalargeextentupuntil1944.Afteraninterrup-
tionduetothewar, in1947 itwaspossibletoresumework. InJune1948,theinspectionauthoritywasintegratedintothenewlyfound-edVerbandderSachversicherere.V. (VdS) (Germanassociationofpropertyinsurers).
Inthefollowingyears,thetechnicalVdSdepartmentsforfireprotec-tionandhousebreaking/theftprotectionwerecontinuouslyexpand-ed. ThefusionofthethreeGermaninsuranceassociations: VerbandderSachversicherere.V., HUK-VerbandandDeutscherTransportver-sicherungsverbandtoformtheVerbandderSchadenversicherere.V.(VDS) in1995wasonlyantemporarysolutionbeforefusionwiththeVerbandderLebensversichererandtheGesamtverbandderDeut-schenVersichersicherungswirtschafte.V. (GDV) in1996. Thetechni-caldepartmentsoftheformerassociationweretransformedtotheVdSSchadenverhtungGmbHon1997,whosesoleshareholderisGDV.
Today,theVdSSchadenverhtungGmbH -orVdSforshort-isamoderncompany,trustedbyallgroupsinvolvedwithsafety-insur-ers, manufacturers, serviceproviders, authoritiesandconsumers. Theexpertiseof VdSisdocumentedbynumerousaccreditations/notifi-cations.

Thefireprotectiondepartmentisaninstitutionthatisrecognised
worldwide. VdSemployeesarehighlyqualifiedexpertswhoworkasaccidentpreventionprofessionals. VdShasbeendedicatedtofireprotectionfornearlyonehundredyears.
Thisexpertknowledgeflowsintothedevelopmentof conclusiveoverallfireprotectionandsafetytechnologydesigns. Thesafetystandarddefinedtogetherwiththecustomer,whichisthereforetobeaimedat, resultsinindividualprotectionatthehighestlevel. Inanutshell,theVdSpursuesthefollowingobjectives: Personalinjuriesareprevented, andphysicaldamageandfinanciallosses, includingdowntimesduetofailuresandpossiblythelossof imagewhichre-sultsfromthis, areminimised.

hasamajorinfluenceonfireprotectionandsafetytechnologyworld-wide. VdSthushasaninternationalknowledgepotentialatitsdis-posalwhichcanbeusedforawiderangeof applications.

Theseguidelinescontaintherequirementsandproviderecommen-dationsforplanning, installationandmaintenanceof stationarysprinklersystemsinbuildingsandindustrialplants. Theyalsodefinespecialrequirementsforsprinklersystems,whichareessentialforpersonalprotectionmeasures. Therequirementsandrecommenda-tionsoftheseguidelinesalsoapplytoeveryaddition, extension, re-pair, maintenanceactionorotherchangetothesprinklersystem.Theseguidelinesincludetheclassificationof dangers,thetypeofwatersupply,thecomponentstobeused,theinstallationandtestingofthesystem, aswellasthemaintenanceandextensionof existingsystems. Demandsareplacedonthebuildingandpartitions,whicharerequiredforsprinklersystemstoworkproperlyinaccordancewiththeseguidelines.

CorrosionApreliminaryassessmentofthecorrosionpotentialforpumpunitcomponentscanbeperformedbasedonawateranalysis. Thepassiv-ityof anymaterialintermsofthepumpedfluidrequiresthatasuita-bleprotectivelayerisformedonthesurfacethatisincontactwiththefluid. Inthecaseof greycastiron,thisiswhatiscalledthe"lime-rustprotectivelayer"which, dependingonthecompositionofthepumpedwater, canformandhelppreventfurthercorrosion. Twocri-teriaarenecessaryforthisprotectivelayertoactsuccessfully:

Onlythecarbonatehardness(sumof calciumandmagnesiumbicar-bonateCa(HCO3)2+ Mg(HCO3)2) isdecisivefortheformationoftheprotectivelayer, nottheoverallhardness.
Otherconstituentsorparametersof naturalwatercanhaveadamag-ingeffectontheresistanceof standardmaterialsabovethespecifiedconcentrations:
SO42-approx.200 mg/l
Cl-approx. 150 mg/l Evaporationresiduesapprox.500 mg/l Electricalconductivityapprox. 1000 S/cm Andtracesof Cl2, H2S, NH3, NH4, sulphur, humicacids, hydrocarbons.
Ifthesesubstancesarecombined, evenlowconcentrationscanleadtomaterialcorrosion. Thewarmeranaggressivepumpedfluidis,thefastercorrosiontakesplace. Iftherearecriticalsubstances, pleaseconsultus. Wiloofferstechnicallymaturespecialdesignsevenforaggressivefluids, suchasseawaterorbrackishwater.

Coatingshaveanegativeeffectonpumpingorimpairtheheatdissi-pationofthedrivemotor. UndesireddepositsmaybeformedifthereisanexcessivetendencytowardlimedepositsaccordingtoFig. 1(hardwater) (e.g. ironapprox.0.2 mg/lormanganeseapprox.0.1mg/l, ochrecoatingsormanganesedioxide).
Solidmatterinthepumpedfluid
Ifthepumpedfluidcontainssolidmatter, materialmaybedepositedinthepump, dependingonitscontentandcomposition. Wilosub-mersiblepumpsaredesignedforamaximumsandcontentof 35 mg/l. Pumpswithcomponentsmadeof morewear-resistantmaterialsonrequest.
Gaseousconstituents
Someapplicationsrequirethepumpingof gaseousfluids(e.g. mineralandthermalwater). Gasbubbleschangethepumpingcharacteristicsconsiderablyundercertainconditionsandcanleadtounfavourableoperatingconditions. Insuchcases, pleaseconsultthefactory.

notesThepurposeofthepumpsistodelivertherequiredflowratesandpressuresforthesprinklersystemsandnozzles. Thepumpsmaynotbeusedforanyotherpurposethanforfightingfires.
Thepressureonthepumppressuresidemustdropcontinuouslywithincreasingflowrate, i.e.thepumpmusthaveastablepumpcurve.
Theusedelectricmotorsmustbeabletoprovidesufficientpowerforallpumploadingconditionsfromazeroflowratetotheendofthepumpcurve. Theendofthepumpcurve(Qz/Hz), measuredatthepumppressureside, isequivalentto0.83timesthevaluewhichisreachedatanNPSHvalueof 9.5m.
Thepumpmaynotbeusedasafixedpointforthepipes. Thepres-sure/ascendingpipeistobesupporteddirectlyafterthepump-wheninstalledasapressureshroudpumpdirectlyupstreamanddownstreamofthepump-andconnectedstress-free. Theinstalla-tioninstructionsaretobeobservedinparticularforcompensators.
Arrangements
with
several
pumps
If morethanonepumpistobeinstalledforasinglewatersupplysourcewithincreasedreliabilityoradoublewatersupply,thesepumpsmustbedrivenbydifferentpowersources.
Inallcases,thepumpsmusthavepumpcurveswhichareadjustedtoeachotherandmustbeabletopumpsimultaneouslyatallflowrates.Iftwopumpsareinstalled, everysingleonemustbeabletodelivertherequiredflowrateandtherequiredpressure. Ifthreepumpsareinstalled, eachpumpmustbeabletodeliveratleast50% ofthepumpedflowrateandtherequiredpressure.
Inthecaseof severalwatersources,thesprinklerpumpsmustbeable
tobesuppliedfromeachindividualwatertankasdesirediftheyarenotseparatedfromoneanother. Inthecaseof pressureshroudoper-ation,thetemperatureinthepumpcompartmentmustbemain-tainedataminimumof +4C.
Maximumtemperatureandcompositionof thepumpedfluid
Thewatertemperatureofthewatersupplymaynotexceed40 C. Ifsubmersiblepumpsareused,thewatertemperaturemaynotexceed25 Cunlessitcanbeverifiedthatthemotorissuitablefortempera-turesupto40 C. Thewatermustbefreeof fibrousorothersus-pendedmatterwhichcouldresultinthepipesbecomingclogged. Saltorbrackishwatermaynotconstantlybeinthesprinklerlines.
