The town of Altaru sits atop an important juncture alongthe Balic-Tyr trade route. Other routes branching fromAltaru extend toward the northern city-states and intothe eastern Tablelands. Altaru lies near the head of theEstuary of the Fored Tongue, a silt channel dotted with
small islands that pours into the great Sea of Silt.Powerful Balican merchant houses sponsor the heav-
ily fortified town. A 15-foot wall encircles Altaru, anda well-trained mercenary army drives off raiders. Thearmys frequent patrols flush out bandits and predatorycreatures within a half-days ride. Only a sizable offensivemight crac the mercenaries defenses. Lately, the armyscommanders have been casting a wary eye toward theEstuary as rumors swirl that the giants are planning toagain move against the town.
