WELCOME

Congratulations on gaining a place on our BA (Hons) Make-up for Media and Performance course. We are delighted to welcome you to Arts University Bournemouth in September. The course will begin with an Induction Week during which time you will have the opportunity to meet the staff and students, to find your way around the campus, to discover Bournemouth and to learn more about the first units of study.

The course is very challenging and is delivered over thirty weeks with the usual Christmas and Easter breaks. You will find in this welcome pack instructions and information about course equipment and books.

We look forward to seeing you on Monday 16 September.

SUMMER PROJECT

For your summer project we would like you to think about the different ways that identity is constructed in order to get a better understanding of your own identities and also those of others.

Task OneIt is impossible to understand character without understanding story, and it is impossible to understand stories without an understanding of the cultural and the political contexts within which they are written and read/viewed. Therefore we would like you to begin to develop the tools you need to critically evaluate film, TV and/or theatre – a skill which is important not just for your degree but also for your future career. We would like you to view four case studies, which can be TV shows, films, or theatre productions, and consider how issues of one or more of RACE, GENDER, SEXUALITY, CLASS, NATIONALITY, AGE, WEIGHT or DISABILITY are portrayed. We would then like you to write a short paragraph (250 words maximum) on each case study. In this you can highlight which of these issues you think are important or relevant, and discuss why you have come to this conclusion. You might want to pick particular characters or scenes to discuss in order to focus your writing. Please bring on a USB.

Task Two — Research and collect make-up designs of Pat McGrath for fashion runway — Based on the images of the work of Pat McGrath, design your own editorial make-up for your best friend and include a photograph of your friend. Your design should be identifiable as your friend. Annotate you design with relevant make-up and hair details. — Please present your designs and research appropriately.

You will need to bring your summer project to induction, you will be notified of the exact day when you arrive.

READING LIST

BooksThe course uses a range of reference material, some of which you may already be familiar with. We do not require you to purchase the following texts, as the Corson books are expensive and the Library has several copies of the reference material you will use. However if you already own copies we do advise that you bring them. You will receive a copy of The Study Skills Handbook during Induction Week, and a Course Handbook which will contain a comprehensive reading list.

PREPARING FOR YOUR COURSE

Computer EquipmentPlease note that a computer of your own is NOT a course requirement. However, if you are purchasing any computer equipment for your course, remember that many computer retailers offer student discounts, so if you are considering buying a computer you may wish to wait until you have enrolled on your course. You may also wish to discuss appropriate hardware and software specifications with the course team before purchasing. AUB has a range of Mac and PCs available for students to use.

Our make-up studios are fitted with MacBook laptops.

Software Provided by AUBOnce you enrol on the course you will be able to download Microsoft Office 365 to your personal computer, so don’t pay extra when buying a computer to purchase MS Office. You get it free as an AUB student! You will also have 1TB of cloud storage, which we recommend you use to back-up all work. AUB also provides access to Autodesk software. Before purchasing additional software we advise you check with the course team, and remember many retailers offer student discount.
